Shortness of breath after stopping smoking

Can anybody tell me if shortness of breath after stopping smoking is normal? I am 32 years old, male, smoked 8-9 cigarettes a day for about 15 years. I stopped smoking three weeks ago. I have never been short of breath in my life, however since I stopped smoking, I find myself out of breath, at strange times, even when sitting at rest. Is this just part of stopping smoking? It seems to be very difficult to find information on the side effects of stopping smoking! Thanks, Richard.

Unfortunately Ralph...according to my last pulmonary functioning test, I am still breathing at 60% capacity. I think what has been happening is basically I am strengthening my lungs as they are...grant it...I slightly get a little SOB but it lasts for seconds...but that's rare. I feel great tho...thanks so much Ralph!
I'm 21,I only smoked 7-8 a day for about 2 years and 3 weeks after quitting I'm experiencing the same symptoms, my doctor explained it this way " your body just starts to realize after you quit how much damage has been done, and what your feeling is your body trying to fix itself"
That makes sense... Unfortunately, it to me around 15 months for my body to fix itself....but I smoked a lot longer and a lot more...good luck for a speedy "healing"!
It will take alot longer than 50 days to recoup, that is certain.
I have quit smoking for one month now. I am young 22 years old, but I started smoking early when I was 16. Since the first day I quit I have been experiencing being short of breath SOB and is really bad feeling. I haven't used Chantix or any other thing to stop so SOB is natural I guess....
It appears to be "natural" but I still can't get my doctor's to say it's as a result of me quitting...he believes it to be a result of me smoking and that I would have experienced it sooner or later but that it was merely a coincidence that it occurred right after I stopped. But as you can see, there is an entire forum that says otherwise...Give it time...you will get better...the process is scary tho...but hang in there...
Funny my doctors all said the same thing but we know otherwise. I don't think if I continued I would have gotten SOB or anxiety. Maybe another 20 years down the road? This all happened to us because we quit. It really goes to show you all the bad stuff in cigs that when stopped make your body go into some sort of shock. Keith
Hi Keith!!!!! Exactly!
Yes, I am 33 years old and have been smoking for last 15 years just quit 2 weeks back I am also experiencing the same hoping it will pass soon!

Yes it will go away. It all depends on the person everyone is different. If you ulread all the posts most of us it took a year or so took back to somewhat normal. I have known people that quit and never had any issues at all. Just hang in there. Keith
Does it feel kinda like you stop breathing for a sec or a heart palpitation then you regain your breath? Thats kinda what mine feels like. I think its a mix of anxiety and my lungs clearing themselves out. And it happens just out of the blue not all the time. What exactly does your feel like if you dont mind me asking.
That is a feeling I still get once in awhile 16 months later. Only when my anxiety is up.
Yes...I have experienced that as well...sometimes, I even felt like I had to remind myself to breath...it was very strange and scary!
Angel what is your oximeter reading at work ??? does it still dip down into the 70s
