Shortness of breath after stopping smoking

Can anybody tell me if shortness of breath after stopping smoking is normal? I am 32 years old, male, smoked 8-9 cigarettes a day for about 15 years. I stopped smoking three weeks ago. I have never been short of breath in my life, however since I stopped smoking, I find myself out of breath, at strange times, even when sitting at rest. Is this just part of stopping smoking? It seems to be very difficult to find information on the side effects of stopping smoking! Thanks, Richard.

I quit smoking Jan 29th and I'm having the same problem. A friend of mine said the same thing happened to her husband but it lasted a little over a month and now he's breathing normal. I'm giving it a couple of weeks then calling the doctor.
I quit almost 2 years ago and I have shortness of breath too... I thought by now I'd be feeling like a million bucks... Still waiting.... Hopefully soon...
Yep having the same thing its kinda scary ! I heard it takes about a year to get over this feeling.

Hang in there all you newbies, it does pass I know how scary it is and everyone should different to how long it can last please remember that ! It does make you have panic or anxiety attacks but try stay calm and deep breathe from your stomach try the honey and lemon a few times daily it does work also steam works too it will be worth it in the end. I'm now at 170 days smoke free still feeling the effects but getting better each day slowly ! Keep reading over all the posts you will see your not alone ! i do have all the symptoms same as you. from SOB to discomfort but in the left rib. i quit 3 weeks ago and i find it comforting that other quitters is going the same thing as i am. hopefully we will make it out of this sooner! :) cheers!
Yes brother, just stay healthy, fruits, drink lots of water. don't stress yourself. be always calm and have a presence of mind whenever anxiety attack happened. deep breath and don't panic.
Hi, I'm 29, do half to an occasional 1 pack a day for 14 yrs, and i just quit 3 weeks ago cold turkey, after 3 to 5 days of quitting i started experiencing SOB and TC with high BP and headache which lasted a week. went to er once during the first week with the same symptoms. did ECG and blood works and everything was fine. after 3 days i fell a bit better after the doctor gave me some muscle relaxant which i took for 3 days. my headache was gone  and my bp was back to normal. but i still get the SOB at random days in the period of 3 weeks. I just want to ask if what are the common triggers of SOB if anybody knows(food or any other). and for my fellow sufferers, what i do whenever i get SOB is keep calm. we tend to get anxious and feel panicky after the SOB starts. just keep calm, and do 9 small breaths and a full breath on the tenth(it may vary with each individual, try to know which count you are comfortable with). and try to ignore the tension in your head keep the breathing pattern up to 2min or so. then take a little of warm water. get enough rest, eat properly, do light exercises, talk to friend or a fellow sufferer and go see your doctor for better advice. We are all in this together. keep it together stay strong and don't ever think of picking up another cancer stick in your life!  Keep safe every one!
I also quit smoking six months ago and have shortness of breath. Sometimes I'll just be sitting on the couch doing nothing and it will come on and I think to myself, what the heck is going on? I don't think it's stress or anxiety because I just don't feel that way. But I must say it has scared me quite a bit. Dis the mucinex help you? I need something to relieve these symptoms. Maybe I need to get out and jog for a little bit.
It's anxiety trust me. I quit 3 years ago and it took a good year to get rid of that feeling.
I am also having horrid anxiety attacks now too ...reading others comments def make me feel more normal
Thank you kerrycan u tell me more about the honey and lemon please x
Any tips on how to deal with the anxiety ? How long did it last ? X
Squeeze half a fresh lemon add to hot water with a spoonful of honey it helps thin the mucus helping to clear it quicker thus aiding breathing drink at least 3 per day ! See Drs for anxiety if it's getting too bad, I found a nice hot bath followed by some deep breathing while listening to some meditation music really helped me, trust me it does get better but I'm still having it occasionally and I'm still coughing up mucus after 171 days !
