Shortness of breath after stopping smoking

Can anybody tell me if shortness of breath after stopping smoking is normal? I am 32 years old, male, smoked 8-9 cigarettes a day for about 15 years. I stopped smoking three weeks ago. I have never been short of breath in my life, however since I stopped smoking, I find myself out of breath, at strange times, even when sitting at rest. Is this just part of stopping smoking? It seems to be very difficult to find information on the side effects of stopping smoking! Thanks, Richard.

Sounds like it's more from stress than from the quit. Just relax deep breath and take it easy for you and the baby.
O K I have gained 15 lbs in the last 2 months so I guess that I can pick up another 25 lbs soon, at least i'm gaining now ,and not loseing weight. i'm also off of the zannies, and only taking one puff a day on the symbicort A little inprovement in the sob but not much yet, one more week on the symbicort and no more, thank god, i had so many bad side effects on that, that its not even funny anymore, Its the 13 of December 2014 i WANT TO WISH YOU ALL A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY HOLLYDAYS TO ALL FAITHS, THANKS RALPH
JUST A REMINDER ON EMPHYSEMA, IT NEVER STOPS, BUT YOUR BREATHING WILL GET A LOTS BETTER WHEN YOU STOP SMOKING, IF YOU DIDN'T USE A ENHALER WHEN YOU SMOKED YOU WANT NEED ONE ONCE YOUR SOB GOES AWAY,HOPEFULLY, HANG IN THERE IT WILL GET A LOT BETTER. TODAY MAKES 540 DAYS ON MY QUIT AND ITS GETTING BETTER THANKS RALPH
37 years at a pack a day and decided to quit when stressed about other stuff already and having SOB and tight chest from that. DUH! Didn't think about it then quit smoking and got the elephant on the chest instead of the bowling ball and the mud from the bottom of the mississippi coming up. Lovely. What a great idea. Then decided caffeine and sugar weren't a help either so dropped them like a hot potato too. See you guys when I get out of the coma from ceasing three major drugs at once. If I had another arm, I'd have needed another vice, eh! Best wishes all, and best health and happiness.
Excellent answer! Just makes sense.
I too quit all three as well. Not sure it was a great idea as I put my body into major shock. I was a complete mess for 3 to 6 months. I lost 30 pounds from the stress. It took a good 12 months to feel better. Now I'm 18 months free and feel pretty good these days. Still have a day here and there where anxiety creeps in which I developed after quitting but I'll take that over smoking. PS..I gained it all back :). Good luck. Keith

I've been here for 18 months now. If it were not for this site, I would have been much worse. I am all good now but still check almost daily to see if someone new needs advise. Up until I found this site I thought I was going nuts and was the only person to quit and go through what i was feeling. Man did it take a long time to feel normal again. Keith
Been here myself for over a year now and although i dont post as much, i will ALWAYS  be here. This thread helped me through  some pretty dark times. Had i not found it,  i have no idea how much harder this might have been.
Amen to that
I'm Having the same shortness of breath issues but only at night. . Happens around 5 pm every night. I'm constantly yawning or trying to take a deep breath.
Has anyone coughed up brown / caramel colored sputum? I have been coughing it up for 10 months now. Doctors have no answers and seem to think it isn't tar residue or one said maybe it is ??? I myself think it is tar but I am not a doctor. I have now been on 6 courses of different antibiotics (two more in the past 2 weeks) and I am still coughing it up daily. When I first started being short of breath I had a dry cough. I then used a hot steam humidifier in my room over night and took long hot steam baths. Ever since starting that about 9 months ago, this stuff started breaking up and coming out. It is tough to get out and I have to work at it but when it does come out I can breathe really good for awhile until more starts to break up and I have to repeat the process over and over again. I must have coughed up a gallon of this stuff by now! Some of it was like a cast of my bronchi, looked like tubes of caramel colored goop. Disgusting stuff and I can't believe all that was inside me...YUCK!! Cigarettes are so disgusting I am mad as hell at myself for ever putting one to my lips!
Hello everyone, I hope some of you are feeling better these days, I woke up this morning and it was a very strange feeling after 18 months of severe anxiety it was gone, checked my oxygen level with my oximeter and it was 90 which is low,but dam i felt great, but it didnt live long at around noon time the anxiety came back with a vengeance, could barely breath, soon it tapered down a little, but not good enough, today is December 21, 2014 its been 18 months to today that i quit smoking, and today was the first break in the anxiety, so i know that its on its way out, just 5 hrs with out anxiety i felt so dam good, THANKS RALPH
