I think you said you had an abscess tooth years ago and had dental work done. It could be the abscess has come back. When you take the antibiotics the pain stops. But after a while it comes back, because the abscess is still there.
I think it could it be tmj or tryGemnalNuralgiga , face Nuralgia
I literally thought I would be the only person in the world who has been through this. I havent been to a dr about it because I figured they wouldnt be able to find anything. It just happened but its the worst its ever been and doesnt feel like it will "pop" back into place, thus why I am reading your question...
I had the same thing going on for over 3 weeks now; as all the other here I got real concerned, I am an RN and had never heard of such a thing. I did ask 2 of our ARNP's at work and one told me it might be caused by reflux, the other one told me it's a "Bezoar" - a small hard collection of food materials that gets stuck somewhere behind your tonsil (in my case in the left) - she told me to take a cotton swab and move my tonsil even if it makes me gag like crazy. It made me gag and almost puke but my problem is fixed since - I felt a difference right away, my swallowing did not hurt anymore and after a few hours the pain and soreness was gone completely.
Have you ever figured out what was wrong?
I have the exact thing going on but it hurts only when I swallow and is on the right side opposite your left site position. Makes no difference. I cannot have anymore CT scans because of a great deal of exposure over the past 15 years. Have you considered having a CT scan of the neck area? If you do please let me know what they find (if anything). I am wondering if it is tumor.
So I'm 30 and I am having the same thing. Mine started a little over a month ago, when I got sick. I had a sore throat, but it did not feel like a normal sore throat, it was compined with what felt like a muscle pain. I had a a fever, chills, pain, (not the flu). I didn't have any coughing, sneezing, mucus drainage, but my throat did swell up very badly for about a week. After about 2 doctor visits and a change in antibiotics the sickness went away and the sore throat went away, but I still had the pain near my adam's apple. It felt more like a bruise than anything. The kind that you feel when you don't touch it, but when you do touch it the pain increases.
I used to have mild acid reflux, but I've changed my diet and I keep that under control. I don't don't/have never smoked. I used to drink occasionally, but over the past year I cut it out. I don't generally have stress in my life because I'm good at taking care of things as they come. I truly believe that things will play out as they will, and that I just have to be ready to adapt. I enjoying adapting to changes because I take at as a challange, so I never really feel stress.
A year before the pain started I do remember feeling something weird in the spot that currently hurts and I gently pushed on it and I felt a sort of pop. This happened maybe 3-4 times in the past year. It never hurt, but it would surprise me. I have no idea if they are connected.
I am a little passed a month since everthing started and my doctor didn't feel anything abnormal when I went in the second time (swelling was gone by then). She tested me for strep, mono, and I don't know what else, but my results all came back normal.
I have insurance, but I have a high detuctible and I know this will take a alot of test, and I am not ready to pay to be told that I everything looks normal. My throat looks perfectly fine. It doesn't hurt to swallow, but I am afraid that the local pain is wanting to spread to my ear at times, and that usually starts a ripple effect with me.
NO SORE THROAT. No difficulty swallowing. I can feel the pain when I swallow, but it's not inside my throat. It feels like it may be the muscles around it. I am weird and I tend to mess with brusies, which makes them worse, and this pain is no different. I am going to try to really keep as much pressure as possible off of the musces to see if it helps. I figured that since so many people thing it could be variables in their lives that may be causing their similar pain that maybe my story may help to rule some out.
Goodluck to all, and if anyone figures anything out please share.
Have you ever had your thyroid checked?
Doctors treat symptoms not necessarily the cause of the symptom - remember that. For those that smoke, eat "diet" products or aspartame related products, you must stop that behavior first and foremost. Let your body adjust if it can. There are many associated anomalies such as this associated with just these type of consumptions.
Secondly, the body has an amazing ability to heal itself - in all matters, even cancerns despite the medical communities leanings. The reason our bodies don't heal is that we are not eating foods necessary to trigger those resposnes. Just because we eat a diet 60% in vegetables doesn't necessarily mean that they were grown in nutriet reach soil. Brocholli grown in the 80's and Brocholli grown today have vastly differetn nutritional values - so keep that in mind. You may need to eat, much much healthier in addition to step one.
Thirdly, Monsanto and drug makers benefit by you eating incorrectly and badly (aspartames and diet drinks etc). It increases their bottom line so there are many, many studies funded by these organizations - watch "The Corporation", "Fat, Sick and nearly dead" and you will learn a great deal about just this.
Fourth, study your bodies. You will always know more about your bodies than an EMT or Doctor for that matter. That doesn't mean I discount their advice, it means you should be educated in something you carry around with you your entire life. We know more about the features of our cellphones than we do our bodies, it requires study.
Our family has taken those steps and continue to study the body, solutions, treatments. In those studies we have learned that root canals can be very dangerous, processed foods cause problems and electromagnetic fields scientifically alter your DNA and cells (holding a blow dryer close to your head, sleeping by a electric outlet or yes, even holding a cellphone to your head). Study it and prove me wrong. There is a great book by M. Pisko, Eletro-magnetic radition, something else to digest, why not?
I wish you all well. I have this same pain and I studied that the lymph system doesn't have pump like the heart does. The only pump that causes the lymph sysytem to circulate its fluid is deep breathing (gained by planned deep breathing or exercise, which causes a deep breathing).
Blessings to all.
Hi I believe we are dealing with the same issue. It almost feels like a toothache just under the left side of my jaw and raiates down towards the inner part of my neck on the left side, NOT in my throat. It is very tender to the touch when I press on it, however it does not affect my swallowing at all. It began three days ago, I just started on an anti biotic today. I am praying it helps. It almost feels like nerve pain relating to a very bad cavity, however, it at the same time does not seem to be the tooth, again under the jaw bone. I really want to know what I am dealing with. The doctor also had no idea what this was and jumped to an antibiotic, thinking there was an infection somewhere.
Wow, finally found people with the same kind of symptoms I have.
I'm 35, don't smole or drink, but around 3 weeks ago I began feeling this odd dull ache in the right side of my neck when I swallow saliva. It's NOT in my throat, this is just up from the base of my neck on the right hand side, a few inches round to the side of my neck.
When I eat solids and drink fluid I hardly ever feel it. When I "force swallow" saliva with an empty mouth I get the ache.
A week after the pain began I came down with a bad cold that went into my chest. I was blowing yellow mucus out my none and was coughing up some horrid stuff but my Doc said it was viral and would pass, so no antibiotics.
I am now over the bad cold, which lasted a week, but the pain in my neck still comes and goes. Some mornings I get up and don't feel it for hours, sometimes I can feel it with one swallow of saliva and not with the next.
My Doc done an examination of my neck and throat and said he can't see or feel anything that concerns him. He suggested it may be an inflamed lymph node due to the bad cold and whatever it is will settle down itself.
The other odd thing is that if I lie on my back I can prod around where the pain is and find a really tender spot deep inside my neck. The pain never radiates and it only comes on when I swallow saliva, it's not constant.
Also, if I take Ibuprofen for a day, as the tableto kick in I don't feel it at all, which makes me think it's inflammation (which is a good sign I guess, since Ibuprofen doesn't take away pain from "serious" issues?).
I don't have any issues eating or drinking, just this odd dull ache as the saliva goes down, deep in the right side of my neck. This is definitely not my throat, and my throat is not sore when I swallow (it was agony like a burning sensation when I had the cold which has now gone).
Some had mentioned GERD as a possibility and while I have aspirated acid while sleeping in the past on several occasions and sometimes when I force a burp food cones back up into my throat, this neck thing is new and very odd
