Suboxone is "suposed" to block the effects of Alcohol. You may feel a little buzzed but, I have found that "I" can't get drunk. I have found that if you wait at least 24 hours after taking your last dose than you will be able to feel the effects of the Alcohol. Then you can continue you dosage as usual with no problem. It does say that drinking with Suboxone is dangerous but, they have to put all those warning's in to cover their butt. Or people would be suing them if somethign did happen.. There are a lot of warnigns with ANY medication that really want harm you. I AM NOT SAYING GO AND DRINK WITH SUBOXONE.. I AM SAYING DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK AND JUDGEMENT!!! 8-|

Yup, that happens when you're not addicted to opiates and you decide to take subs. Not a good idea my friend. Happened to me also.

I am on Suboxone, and it says right in the pamphlet that was handed to me upon induction to the methadone/suboxone clinic: Do not drink alcohol while taking Suboxone. This is simply because they don't want to get sued if you decide to drink alcohol on this drug and then as a result, DIE. Therefore I would not reccommend drinking on it.
It is killing me too, not t being able to have a beer or two, but it's not like we will be on it forever...sucks not having a brew with dinner over the holidays though, I must say...

I drank at least 10 beers tonight, I take 2 of the 8/2mg Suboxone/Nalxone everyday, and it seems to get me drunker faster, but there is no negative effects for me. I feel great, and my buzz is lasting longer. Although on New Years Ever, I took my regular dose of Suboxone, drank a ton, and smoked a bunch of marijuana, and I blacked out, don't remember anything but bits and pieces.

Sorry, but the pull of alcohol on buperenorphine is very very little. You can get loaded on narcan or your typical dose of opiates and you won't feel the effects at all because the buperenorphine has such a strong affinity to your Mu opiate receptors. It's true that alcohol does effect your Mu receptors in a round about way but codeine or tramadol probably has more pull on your Mu receptors than alcohol, because they atleast directly pull on the Buperenorphine. Alcohol does not pull on your Mu receptors, but the dopamine flood from your Gaba A receptors (the thing alcohol directly effects) is going to try to attach to those Mu receptors where buperenorphine is attatched. Whether or not you could actually feel any withdrawal from that dopamine is not documented, but I highly doubt it because we are talking about two very different substances that effect a completely different group of receptors and drugs.

All of your guys and gals horror storries of throwing up from alcohol and suboxone is most likely from the little amount of narcan that is in your system. Buperenorphine plus alcohol WILL make you feel bad if you drink a lot, but try mixing .2mg IV Narcan plus 4-5 alcoholic drinks and you will be barfing for hours.

So, if you are taking subutex you could take more alcohol theoretically, but alcohol plus buperenorphine is still going to make you feel bad, just not nearly AS bad as that small amount of narcan in your system. Also the amount of narcan adsorbed per person varies hugeeely just like buperenorphine. The average person adsorbs somewhere around 2-3 percent of the narcan sublingually, but about a 1/4 of people adsorb 12-15%. Once again not nearly enough to effect the buperenorphine, but enough to make you yak your brains out with a medium amount of alcohol.

Source: doctor I see was co-creator of Suboxone, and my masters and undergrad is neuropharmacology (how drugs effect the brain), and I just started my first year of my PHD. My doctor and I get carried away and talk about this type of stuff every appointment, and we had this conversation about alcohol + suboxone, so it's kind of funny that I found this thread randomly on google.

Hope this helps.

i took half of a suboxone last weekend after i drank 2 bottles of wine...let me tell you, i have never been more sick in my life. i went home and was shakey and my stomach was swirling and then the entire next day i had my head in the toilet...i've never been so hungover in my life before.

so quite frankly, i do not recommend taking suboxone while drinking...unless you like being extremely hungover for no reason. because the high or whatever wasnt even great...or worth the hangover.

Yeah in my experience, its just not a good idea to mix any opiate with alcohol, and that especially goes for methadone and suboxone. For one the effects are not going to be much more enjoyable than say something safer such as marijuana, and the possible side effects are much much worse. I can tell you that unfortunately someone within my distant family experienced respiratory failure as a result of getting black out drunk while on I think 8 mg a day. Think about it, if you pass out drunk on suboxone you are more likely to not wake up for one thing, and more likely to vommit and reach dangerous levels of low breathing. Of course everyones body is different and some can handle a few but, I wouldnt recommend it as someone in the pharmacology field who has been on sub before.

Well of course you got sick. If you are not addicted to opiates that means you have a very low tolerance. Suboxone is only meant for peeps who are addicts to opiates and have a high tolerance. Wether or not you drank with it your gonna get sick. The same woukd happen if you took to much hydrocodone, you get sick. ***edited by moderator*** ** inappropriate posting**, you obviously had to much of the suboxone. Even an opiate addict gets sick if they take to much more than what their tolerance can handle.

Who are all you kidding ?
Yourselves
, that's who. To be clean ..you have to stay away from drugs and alcohol. If you are addicted to one you are addicted to all. Drugs and booze. You are not completely clean till you have quit all that c**p. Come on lets stop kidding ourselves that we can do the drinking. WE CAN"T WE are addicts. Save your brain and your self and STOP the insanity

the reason you got so sick is because u took something ment for opiate addicts i took one before i was ever addicted and got the same effect- sick as a DOG for a day atleast. when i was addicted to opiates a couple years later all it dose is make you feel normal. and as for the original question, right on the bottle (if your even perscribed) it says dont drink and that should be the ans. neways why dont you just ask your perscribing dr or the pharmacist their there to help you

To all the people who said drinking on subs made your sick (no offense here) are probably women or men who don't weigh very much.  I have been on subs for 3 years and drink almost every night.  a 1.75l bottle lasts me about a week so thats quite a bit.  The only thing i get is bad hangovers if i wake up in the middle of the night and take another shot to go back to sleep.

I have taken adderal many many times while on the subs and never had any counter actions.

I have taken xanax many many times and have never had any counter actions.

I told my doctor im drinking a few nights a week and he said just keep it under 3 drinks.  Of course I didn't tell him how much I'm drinking.  I recently went back to my doctor to get off the subs and told him i wanted klonopin to help with the WDs and he said no so im finding abother doc.

The worst drug I have taken with the worst reactons on suboxone is ambien.  I always black out.  Before ambien used to get me a good high but while on subs ive never been able to get that high and I always end up wrecking my car whenever I take ambien.

I take anywhere from 4-8mg a day of subs depending on the day.

So yes you can drink on suboxone (ive never drank to where I black out).  But one thing I have learned in all my years of doing drugs n c**p is that everyones body is different.  Just because my body can handle it doesn't mean yours does.

I wish I had never got started with the subs.  I went to rehab because I OD'd on heroin and told the doctor i was taking heroin every day when I wasnt and told him I wanted subs.  What I really wanted was something to give me a buzz every day and now 3 years into its a nightmare.  Getting off the suboxone is 10 worse then the heroin.  At least the heroin WD are only a week.  I quit subs one time and made it till day 13 and then said f it.  It got worse with time not better.

I won't quit taking suboxone until I get enough xanax/klonopin to help with the WD's.  I am not a big fan of benzos so Im not worried about getting addicted to them but thats what every doctor seems to think with my past.

Hope this post as helped someone.  IF ANYTHING IF YOU ONLY BEEN TAKING SUBOXONE FOR A MONTH OR TWO GET OFF NOW.
