I have been on suboxone for years, and i drink all the time. i have not had any problems but it is not something you should do often. one night or occassional use of both is fine i would say, and to the person who says suboxone keeps you from getting buzzed/drunk, that is not entirely true, if you only have a couple drinks that may be true, but if you drink an amount to get you drunk, you will get drunk like a normal person, you will absolutely feel it!

try waiting until a few hours after your last dose of suboxone for the day though, that should help! that is what i do and it seems to work fine for me! i would definitely tell you not to drink first and then do suboxone later, take your last piece of suboxone at let's say 4 or 5 pm and don't start drinking until 8 or 9 pm. taking suboxone when already intoxicated is a very bad idea, you will probably end up getting dizzy and puking your guts out if you do that!

It all depends on how you react to opiates. Some people get sick as a dog, others feel a little nauseated, and others feel fine. If you puke of feel nauseated, i would not recommend alcohol. If you are fine with opiaes (which i am), I would still watch how much i drink, because you WILL get drunk faster and more easily, but beyond that, suboxone and alcohol don't have any adverse reactions with each other. Just be careful. As I said, you WILL get more drunk more quickly, so just be careful how much you drink. Hell, I'm doing it right now. I took an 8mg suboxone strip about 6 hours ago, and so far I've drank 2/3 pint of vodka, and I am fine! As long as you pay attention to how much you are drinking, you should be fiine.

It all depends on how you react to opiates.  Some people get violently ill, some feel a little nauseated, and others are fine.  If you get sick or feel nauseated, then don't drink, that will make it worse.  If you are ok, the go ahead.  Just watch how much you drink, because you WILL get drunk faster!  I'm doing it myself right now.  I took an 8mg suboxone strip about 6 hours ago and so far I've drank about 2/3 pint of vodka and I'm fine.  I have a really good buzz goin but I'm perfectly fine.  As I said, you WILL get drunk faster, and if you drink too much, you will black out more easily.  As long as you watch how much you drink though, you will be fine.

Thank you so much for your post, I can't believe more people haven't liked this or at least acknowledged its usefulness. I appreciate you and your docs conversations so much, much more than everybodies "I drink and puke but it's ok cuz we're all drug experts" mentalities... I also love how you did not even come close to that tone. I am an opiate addict, I was a very heavy user. I tried methadone first, and slowly tried to work alcohol back into my routine. I could still drink heavily, but it does put you at risk because both are CNS depressants and alcohol pushes sh*t out of your system faster and all things pass through your liver, so Suboxone plus alcohol is the same as taking heroin plus alcohol, Advil plus alcohol, Tylenol etc. etc. etc., so just read the warning labels, consult an actual physician (which is actually the most important), or if you don't want to pay attention to all the warnings saying don't mix, at least try moderation. Just my opinion. I also now have liver cirrhosis, most likely because of my super high methadone dose, although no one will actually admit to that (but it didn't help I was a lifelong drug abuser either, I'm only 30 though) so just be careful.

My brother in law has been on suboxone for maybe 1.5 yrs. Last month he had a bad week, so he took extra as he was feeling weak near guys at work who used to supply his drugs. For 2 days at the end of his scrip when he had to wait for his refill, she said  he showed signs of withdrawl. This suboxone saved his life 1.5 yrs ago. Now my sister is having a fit he is addicted to the suboxone. She also has a fit he has a few beers on the wkends, and has not showed any side effects from the beer while on the suboxone.  She has a fit I drink coffee too. (just to show her personality) In January,..the 1st to be exact, his therepist and my sister told my bro-in-law he has to go off the suboxone. I fear he will go back to the pills and go down big time. Has anyone been on this for longer then 2 yrs with any opinions?  A friend of ours, her husband takes one a day, and has for over 3 yrs.  She is just happy her husband is himself and doesnt think anything wrong he is still taking the suboxone. I dont want to lose my brother in law. I honestly fear he will go back to the popping pills, as it is readily available to him by the guys he works with.  It is too good of a job to leave,....it is major health ins, and great pay. He needs this job. Is my sister behaving like the pain in the ass she really is in regular world,....(everything and everybody has to be perfect),.......or is it safe/ok he go off?  Thank you for whom ever replys info.

I've been on suboxone for 2 years now and have been drinking on the weekends quiet a bit since. I go to college and that's just how we blow off steam, I drink large amount of alcohol and am perfectly fine while being drunk. The hangover sucks but all hangover's suck. Suboxone doesn't have any impact on me if I only drink a couple beers.... their's no hang over the next day. Suboxone doesn't prevent you from getting drunk. So the answer is YES!!!! You can drink while on suboxone. The only thing I would suggest is if your new to suboxone and have only taken suboxone for a day or so and have little withdrawals from the opiates you used to do, don't drink alcohol but other than that you'll be perfectly fine.

My long pharmacy write up on the usage and dangers of suboxone says, "Do not drink alcohol or take other medications that may cause drowsiness while you are using this medicine; it may add to their effects. This medicine may cause dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting. Alcohol may increase these effects. Injecting this medicide will cause severe withdrawal symptoms." I have a drink or two sometime and I'm on 2, 8mgs a day. Have had no problem.
