i had this same problem on my elbows and sides of my feet..i asked the owner of the salon today and she said it is a heat rash from sweating and that i need to keep wiping the area with a towel throughout my session
about three years ago i fell asleep in the sun at disneyland, and broke out in this horrible sun rash because i had been on an antibiotic, cipro. i never had the problem again until recently when i started tanning for prom. last year i tanned for prom for about a month and everything was fine. this year, however, i didn't even make it a full two weeks and i was getting this terrible burning rash all over my chest, one patch on each of my shoulder blades, and a little patch on my buttcheek. it goes away after about 10 hours but it's still extremely painful. they're slight red bumps, and extremely irritating and burning. i don't know what it is, i've never had a problem like this other than when i was on a certain medication.
I just got a rash, itchy and blotchy now showing up for the third morning after my last lay down tanning session. The rash only is happening in the a.m. hours?! It is on just the back of my legs which coincidenlty felt the hottest during the session.
I am going to my dermatoligist in at 1:00 p.m and will report back.
I regret using the tanning bed and hope this is not something I really end up paying for.

I've had this type of problem for a couple years now. Mine start out as a few very small raised spots on my arms and hands. A couple have been on my lower legs. They start to grow and eventually appear like ringworm. I went to a dermatologist who told me it was a chemical reaction (rash) to the sun and stop tanning. There is no cure but to put on sun block. I've found that if I spend to much time outside in the sun they will reappear. Now I'm tring to slowly tan every few days for shorter periods and hopefully can abtain my tan.
I've been dealing with this problem a few years now. My rash starts out as an itchy small raised bumps on my arms, hands and sometimes legs. It progresses into a small round ringworm type rash that continues to grow to about the size of a half dollar. This also happens when tanning outside in the sun. I've been to a Dermatologist who told me it is an allergic reaction to the sun (sun poisioning). There is no cure and not much that can be done other then staying out of the sun and tanning beds. The symptoms go away after a few weeks but will reappear if I get to much sun. I enjoy going to the tanning salon, but I keep my tan time down to a minimum and use a combination bronzer with a sun screen SPF 6. When the spots appear I rub some Clearasil on the affected area to help dry it up and place a bandaid over the top. Try to use one that covers and seals the whole area. Change the bandaid and Clearasil daily after showering. The spots will dry up to a darker scaly appearance and heal faster. I continue to tan even with the bandaids on my arms, they protect the spots from the tanning rays. If anyone has found a better way to solve this problem let me know.
Thanks

More then likely if you are suffering from an itchy rash-like symptom in certain areas (elbows, shoulderbones, tail bones, etc.) then it is due to your pressure points. The pressure points are usually the parts of your body that are touching the bed causing the blood flow and melanin production to be reduced. A lot of times this will cause uneven tanning and will itch like crazy! If you must tan, try a stand up!
Oh My I was starting to think I caught chicken poxs or something from the tanning bed becuase I got it on my chest and tummy and thats all. But my stomach didnt touch the bed. And I didnt use any tanning lotion today either. Im going to tell the manager about it in the morning becuase I really think this is something that needs to be made aware. Especially with this being in the summer months and alot of military wives around here are going to the beds for our husbands when they come home and a pick me up from the gloomy winters :$
I get a hive like rash on the small of my back right above my butt crack after every time I tan! It hurts and itches and is really annoying and I don't know what it is, it goes away the next day after I tan, but comes back every time, does anyone know what it is? and how to make it stop.
I get the same exact thing!
its like at the very top of my buttcrack like a circle around it
it hurts to touch it :[
but it itches really bad
i came on here to see what it was and how to get it to go away

I can tell all of u right now that I use to work at a tanning salon, and I have a problem similar to the ones you all are facing. When i first started going to the tanning bed I didn't go to often, so I didn't have the rash. But a few years ago when I worked at a tanning salon, I started going more frequently. That is when i noticed the red, almost blistering rash I was getting on my elbows, butt, and heels of my feet. Even though I do have sensitive skin this problem is not uncommon to tanners who don't. My boss told me I was having a reaction to the cleaner used on the beds, whether it was too strong or just my sensitive skin acting up. So if you are having this problem, you need to have the bed sprayed with water and wiped down before you get in or use an alcohol wipe. Some salons may have you do this yourself, but most will actually do it for u. As for the girls getting rashes on parts of your body not coming in contact with the bed, I would say these are either heat bumps because of your sweating and you need to wipe those areas while you are tanning, or you are are having a reaction to your lotion. I would not recommend using a high tingle lotion if you are experiencing either of these problems.
I work at a tanning salon and sometimes certain people's skin can be more sensitive than others even though we dilute the cleaning solution. (most of us use the same solution because that's what's approved, so all tanning salons will affect you if you are sensitive to the solution.) So, what you need to do is ask the sales associate to wipe the bed down with water before you get in and that should help! Also, lift your arms and butt cheeks every couple minutes while you're tanning to get the blood circulating there again.
I have the pressure point right on my tailbone where it is in direct contact with the tanning bed. It doesn't get tan right in that spot and I have noticed the same small rash. I am using calamine lotion and I am going to speak to the people at the tanning salon. I am glad to hear that other people are in the same boat as I am.
This is not an allergy to the tanning beds- I have talked to both doctors and tanning attendants and the problem is the lack of oxygen to your skin. This is why the most common places are pressure points. The reason it is happening more often now than when we first started tanning is because of the stronger bulbs being used today. Super and medium beds are the bigger problems. Try a stand up bed or if you prefer lay down- roll around and move a lot. Even on the beds that are designed for relieving pressure points, this can still occur. For those that already have the rash/ burns use cortisone with some aloe. It stops the itching, you wont scratch, and its allowed to heal. Hope this helps! :-D
I worked at a tanning salon for 5 years, and most salons across the nation use a solution called Lucasol. It's a natural anit-disinfectant, anit-fungal.... and like 10 other things. And yes, the solution is supposed to be dilluted and mixed properly, but the odds of you having a reaction to it are slim. The solution is hypo-allergenic and natural. The redness (rash) on your elbows is because of the contact with the acrylic. When the acrylic heats up, so does the lotion on your skin... it's a heat rash. On your butt too... heat rash. Now, if you get little red pimple like things that is either a reaction from previous sun poisoning, another heat rash or something called tinea versacolor, which is harmless. You can keep wiping down the areas with a towel throughout your session, but it might not always help. Plenty of moisturizer (something with hemp and or aloe is the best), and Neutrogena Body Clear Body Wash.... it works! Hope this helped.
I have been getting this rash for years in the tanning bed and from natural sunlight also.Mine will eventually go away, with the exception of the inner sides on the tops of my arms. I have tried everything and nothing works. The normal places I get it is the tops of my thighs, back, and stomach. It is not really painful and itches a little. It is just really looks bad, like I have some kind of skin disease. If anyone finds a cure, besides not tanning, please post it
