I asked the tanning manager at my store I go to and she told me it was because i was dehydrated. She said most people get it where there butt and back meet in the middle and two spots on there shoulder blades where you lay in the bed. I also have them on my elbow. I have never tanned and this is the first year I have tried and had gone to the beds.. Its been about a month now and the one right above my butt looks like a bad burn and is probably almost a 2nd degree. I would hate to stop tanning but i think that is what I will have to do.

I have the same rash on my elbows where the bone is and on the top of my but. These are both places where the skin is very sensitive and is right on the tanning bed. I think it may be just the fact that those areas are not getting any air and are getting direct heat plus they are sensitive skin areas. I am going to try to lay differently so these areas are not laying right on the tanning bed. I am also going to wipe all the spray off the bed before hand with a damp towel just in case that has something to do with it. I think the heat and disinfectant spray plus not air to the skin would cause a reaction. I have never had this before until I switched tanning salons. %-)

I am glad to know other people have this problem. I was worried it might be skin cancer. I have sensitive skin but the red "ringworm" patches I have been developing on my elbows as of lately are new to me. I have tanned for 4 years now. I took a break from tanning for about 5 months. I have since rejoined at Sun Tan City and I am getting these rashes on my elbows. I will try the standup bed and spray the beds down with water.

I used to tan all the time when I was in high school, and then a year after graduation I started tanning again, and I would get the little red bumps and it was would be so itchy all over my chest, it sucked really bad. So I didn't got for a few days and went back and it just kinda stopped. Then the next year I started again, and it happened again, so this time I waited a week before I went back and I went into a hex because I thought it was the bed. Well It came back. I just started tanning agian, it's been three years, and the first week went fine, I had a small area on my stomach but it wasn't enough to really bother me and it went away later that day, well today I went and It's on my thighs and two spots on my back and I had a little spot on my arm, but the spots aren't there anymore. My legs are really annoying me though so I'm going to wait a few days and do the water bottle thing and see what happen. If it keeps up I'm going back to my fake bake.

ok, check this out, it seems most everbody eventually can develop a rash to the tanning beds, this because in some state everbody is allergic to the uv rays, just depends on how sensitive, I have learned the cheaper beds use uva bulbs which are harder on the skin or what causes that allergic reaction, the more expensive beds use bulbs that are uvb or uve and don't quote me on that exactly, however i don't get the rashes useing those beds, if your getting them with in the first week of tanning, let them heal and the next time you go to tan, upgrade that tan to a expensive bed and see if it works for you, however it probably is a combination of the cleaner, lotions and those damn uva rays, read up on those and see what you can find out! good luck.

I worked at a tanning salon for many years. If the person before you used a tingle lotion and the bed wasnt cleaned properly it can also cause you to break out temporarily. Especially if you aren't a tingle lotion user... Clean your own bed!! always!!!!!

I've been tanning for about a month now. After my second session, my skin broke out in a red, itchy rash on the backs of my arms, the bottom of my rib cage where my bra rubs, my hips (sides and front) and my upper thighs. I know my skin well enough, and have tanned for a few years now, so I knew that it wasn't an allergy. I asked the salon about their cleaners, what was in them and how they were mixed, but it wasn't adding up.

After a little bit of internet research and talking to a good friend that also goes tanning, my conclusion - My skin was drying out from lack of moisturizer. It wasn't enough to put on lotion before crawling into the bed. I had to slather up after every shower, and whenever it started to itch, in order for it to go away.

I have the same problem. I started indoor tanning about 2 weeks ago and I have a rash on my arms, my chest and my back. I heard that its perfectly normal especially if your skin hasnt been exposed to the sun or UVB for a long time. It's best to stop tanning for a few days untill the rash goes away completely and then start tanning but no more than 3 times a week so your skin can gradually get used to the sun. I use moisturizing lotions that contain Aloe Vera to reduce the itchiness

Okay, I've experienced the same sort of rash and have been researching this skin condition as well. My salon has taken on new owners and my concern was whether the Lucasol, or their cleaning agent of choice, was causing the reaction.

The bulbs on the beds have also been changed. This raises a another issue with UVA versus UVB. After reading numerous posts, I am committed to finding out which of the two are being used on my salon's beds. And if this is occuring throughout salons across the nation, it is time for a different ruling on what can and cannot be used on beds.

In addition, I reading alot about "tingle" lotions. Can someone explain this to me. Does it cause "tingling"? What are name brands of these lotions? The rash is one thing, but I am also experiencing a sensation of "pins and needles". Painful and intolerant. I can't remain in the beds and it starts only minutes after entering the bed. What's the solution?

I have been having a very similar problem. It didn't happen when I was at the beach two days ago, but the past two days, after I go tan, I've broken out in a rash on my torso. Not my arms, not my legs, just the trunk of my body.

I did a little research, which is what lead me here, but I found out a few things.

A few posts up you mentioned being dehydrated. That can cause it.

The tanning bed could be drying your skin out which can also cause this rash.

And another reason, which seems obvious, but no one would ever think about it.

Have you noticed that the places you are getting the rash are the places that get the least amount of sun exposure? Your butt, your chest, your stomach and back. If you're like me, I don't expose those places to the sun very often. Being in a tanning bed in various states of undress and exposing those areas to UV rays is over stimulating the nerves and causing a rash.

That makes the most sense to me. I do have dry skin, and those places don't get much, if any, sun exposure, so I'm thinking that that is what is causing mine. It could also be an allergy to the cleaner.

I found all of that information here: https://www.steadyhealth.com/Tanning_Bed_Rash_t111530.html

The best way to tell if you are properly hydrated is the color of your pee. If you drink a lot of soda, it's probably dark, and you are dehydrated, even if you're not thirsty. If it's clear or mostly clear you're good.

Drink a lot of water and be sure to moisturize. If that doesn't help, and if building up your sun exposure doesn't stop the rash, you could try to take benadryl after you get home, or see your doctor and start taking an antihistamine like Claritin.

Hope that helps. That website had some other info on it to, so it's worth checking out.

The back of my heels would itch like crazy at night. It looked like there was a blister on the back of each heel. Come to find out they were blisters from tanning beds. When you're on your feet during the day you don't feel the sensation of the blister. It's when you lay down at night or even are woken up in the night by the ithcing. Simple solution...place a towel under your feet while tanning. Give the blisters time to heal and remember they will continue to itch until completely healed.

I have the same thing going on. Heel blisters from the bed and a rash on my legs, chest, stomach, back and butt. It's almost like hives and very itchy, kept me up last night. I had went 3 days in a row, skipped a day and then last night had this really bad rash. I figure it is the disinfectant they use, someone not mixing it properly- too strong.
As far as my heels I normally don't burn there but they just got new bulbs and I guess from getting pedicures and keeping the rough skin off your heels they burn easier.
Hope this helps someone else wondering

It sounds to me like you may have actually gotten a staph infection from the tanning booth. Does that make sense? It can happen on occasion. Let me know if that sounds right.

I have been having the same things for years. It always is in the same place ( tailbone). Same symtoms as alot of the others. Small bumps that stay in an area about silver dollar size. It hurts and it itches like mad ! When I itch it , it starts to welt up and forms a scab from all the itching. It hangs around for about a month. Its right where you sweat on the tanning bed. My ex-boyfriend dumped me for this, after a 9 month relationship. He thought I had been cheating on him ??????????HUH ?
