Have been on Bacrim DS twice per day with a newly diagnosed MRSA infection. It is the correct antibiotic based on cultures. I cannot tasteanything very well. Diet sunkist soda has the best flavor right now. FYI: is this my punishment for placing some of my patients on the sulfa antibiotic, as I am a physician.

My Mother in law just asked me to research this issue, as she has been experiencing it. I believe her issue is connected to blood pressure medication side-effects, but it sounds like your paint thinner may be the culprit.

I had a tonsillectomy two years ago myself and lost all taste, over time salt + sour came back but all chocolate, cakes, sweets etc still taste *really* off to me. The ability to enjoy fruit has only come back to me in the last few months even!

My sense of smell is perfect, and my surgeon and all doctors since have told me it should have come back by now, i've searched everywhere and haven't found any answers! Tell me, a year on are you able to taste sugar/chocolate etc again?

Also I don't know about you, but no one outside my inner circles seems to believe me, as I get rude comment from colleagues in particular whenever I turn down birthday cake or chocolate, people get suspicious and seem to think I'm just on some crazy diet, when really I just can't enjoy sweet tasting food anymore and don't see the point in eating tasteless food!

yes. I just started Minocycline and that has happened. I hope it goes away when I get off of it.

Mart5fam: Did you ever find out anything about your not having ability to taste "sweet" items/food? I have been diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma and all of sudden I cannot taste anything sweet.

I have had the same thing happen. Ear infection and headaches the past week and now hacking and coughing. Cant taste sweets at all. Someone said in one of the above posts that chocolate chip cookies taste bad. Thats exactly right. I guess its this illness going around.

Did any of you happen to drink flavored water such as Mio? I woke up today after drinking a couple bottles of water with mio added to it and I can't taste sweet things as well today.

I too have lost my sense of taste, especially sweets on minocycline. I will stop taking it when my current prescription is finished. It is not fun not tasting correctly.

I've lost my taste as well. Have lost ability to taste sweet or salty. All other food taste like cardboard. In fact, I just ate a whole lemon. It didn't even make me pucker...so I guess I have lost the ability to taste sour as well. I cannot think of anything that I have done different to make this happen. Have not been sick.

11 years ago I lost the ability to taste sweet things after developing choreoamnioitis after the birth of my fourth child. I chose not to take antibiotics. After seeing a regular doctor, an ENT specialist, and a naturopath, all the advice I received was to let time pass and try vitamin B12 and zinc. I tried these for a year with no improvement, sweet things just tasted horribly bitter especially things made with white sugar. I came across an article (I don't remember where) that suggested if you had symptoms of a mineral deficiency even though you were taking the mineral that your body may be missing the enzyme to use the mineral. Knowing that the body uses amino acids to form the enzymes, I tried taking amino acid acid tablets with my zinc. After about a month my ability to taste sweet gradually came back. So then I tried just the amino acids and lost the ability to taste sweet again. When I take both the zinc and amino acids the ability to taste sweet gradually returns. Even now when I get lazy and think maybe I don't have to take those supplements, I lose the ability to taste sweet, and it always returns when I start taking them again. These are the supplements I have found that work for me: NOW L-Optizinc and KAL Absolute Amino. I usually take them before bed with a little something in my stomach otherwise the zinc makes me horribly nauseated.

I have the same problem. Mine started about 4 months ago. Not only can I not taste sweets, but my entire taste is dull. I have done nothing different prior to this. Was not sick, and I don't smoke. My taste buds are very tolerant to spicy food now, too. I can eat whole jalapeno peppers with just mild reaction. Food made with cumin and chili powder are the only things that I can get any taste from. I am seriously tired of my diet of Mexican food. Doctors have not been able to help...

This is exactly what's happening to me right now...I can't explain it, it's as though it happened overnight! It was a diet cola that first made me realise it. I made chili earlier tonight and I could taste everything in it, except the sweet of the tomatoes...no one else noticed a different taste to it. Ice cream just tastes like cold milk, fruit has no taste....it's completely awful. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

I was very excited after reading this post. I've posted before - I have not been able to taste sweet for 2.5 years now. Nobody I've seen has ever heard of it, so can offer no help. But, your solution makes sense to me. I just got the amino acids today and hadbeen taking zinc already. So, I am hopeful that by Thanksgiving I'll be able to taste all the delicious food. Stay tuned...
