I am 50 and just got mine taken out due to mine growing together and having a hard time swallowing. I am 2 weeks into recovery and also still taking pain meds. I use a lidocain swallow that seems to help. Still cant talk but have fairly good energy. Got to follow up with the surgeon wed so guess we will see what she says. Am a disabled vet and have had 60 surgeries and this is the worst I have ever had.

Getting ready to have mine left one taken out possibly. I am 61 and have smoked in the past for years. He isn't sure if it is infection or throat cancer until he biopsied it on the 26th of August. Kinda scared but I know it will be okay.Just wish I had more people to talk about this with. Praying it's not cancer

At the age of 54, I had my tonsils removed. I'm 1 day after my surgery, and I feel great, sans a minor sore throat! Comments I read hafod me scared to death! I have even cut way back on pain meds, and I drink lots of water! I think everyone's experience is individualized. My experience had been very positive....plus, I have a GREAT ENT!

Hi,
I am 51and was scared of getting my tonsils removed from what i heard about the higher risks of this operation to people above 40. On the other hand, I just can't describe how much pain and fever from the strep A infection that I get almost every 3 months. The ENT specialist told e that y tonsils are very large and the crypts are very deep only heavy doses of high potency antibiotics may help, but for sometime though. The other scary thing I learned is that this recurrent tonsilitis may affect my heart as well. So I think I would say ok for the surgery. Just wanted to share this experience with you and any advice will be much appreciated.

Hope everything turned out all right for you, Debbie. You and I are the same age. Just know someone in Iowa is thinking of you and hopes you have all this behind you now.

Hi, I'm 54 and just had my tonsils removed yesterday on 4-20-16. Although its day 2 all I feel so far is the discomfort of the surgery and the small difficulty of swallowing. I'm definitely following the rules to the letter. The smartest move I made was after reading this blog, I had them give me something for pain right after the surgery, they crushed a perc, dilluted it in water and after it dissolved I took my time but got it all down. I'd say that helped me a WHOLE lot. Drink frosty liquids yesterday and had jello and sherbet last night. Today I'm doing pudding and trying to see if I can handle some lukewarm tea. If not I've already made a big mug to chill in the frig. Love tea. It was hard for me not to be able to drink it a week before as one of the requirements to get prepared for the surgery besides the no vitamins. Good luck to all who have the surgery after 50. So far it's not been the horror stories I read here thus far. Oh, p.s. I still have not taken anything for pain since they gave me that crushed up perc yesterday morning and will try to go as long as possible before having to reach for the liquid pain med. Didn't sleep good, 2hrs on, running to the bathroom from all the liquids but I'd say that was a small thing considering I wasn't in excuriating pain. I can always catch up on sleep during my recovery process. I hope my testimony has helped someone on their way to their tonsils last curtain call. Continued blessings and God speed.

Are you glad you had it done? I'm 56 in June and they say I have sleep apnea and it might help to have tonsils out, have a awesome surgeon, but I'm very scared, any thoughts or advice would be appreciated. Thanks

PS, I just wanted to reiterate. After I wrote this post I had 12 days of the most horrible pain ever experience in my 54 years. its the 21 day and my throat is still very sore although I'm trying to get down more liquds. I want some real food but can only tolerate mashed potatoes and grits. I just want my throat to feel normal again.
