Right I had my tonsils out 7 days ago and to be totally honest, It very sore yes but seriously guys, you all made me think that the pain was going to kill me.

You put me off loads of times by reading you stories, its only the minority who write on here and that all. The majority get thru it fine, and dont need to write silly messages saying OOOOOOOOOOOOH THE PAIN!

Day 1: Woke up with sore throat, slept most of that day

Day 2: Had so toast which was nasty cause it was burnt, Hurt but the more you eat the better the pain in.

Day 3: Had a tiny bit of an ear ache, dull and annoying. Troat was pretty sore and raw still, i kept taking the painkillers and drinking lots of water, made me perk up a bit when you drink and eat.

Day 4: More of less the same as day 3, however i did pick up during the day.

Day 5: Took one step back and 2 steps forward by the end of the day.

Day 6: Felt alot better, went out for a meal.

It's sore yes, very sore, but please, the internet is the worse place to get put off on this operation. My adivce would be, stop reading stories and go out and find out what its like, and it aint that bad.
guess u must be superman. Not everyone heels the same way and some are not that fortunate. People do need to know what they might experience, you just have gotten lucky. If it wasn't that bad, there wouldn't be so many reviews. I'm goin on day 3 and it is steadly gettin worse. The first two were not that bad but I believe the healing process is startin because it is gettin much harder to swallow and my tounge and uvula are gettin bigger.
dear god... i am supposed to have my tonsils out on the 22nd of march, but after hearing all of these stories, and stories from people that i know... f**k, i don't know if i can do this!

i am 20 years old, and have never had problems with my tonsils until about a month ago. ever since then, my tonsils have been about the size of golfballs, and were nearly touching for a couple weeks. yes, i had a sore throat, but it was nothing terrible. i still have a sore throat, but it's definitely bearable, and i hardly notice it if i don't think about it.

oh my god.. i don't know what to do. if i end up in agony in the middle of the night for 2 weeks i will f*****g kill my doctor for not warning me! or maybe just kill myself.. f**k i don't know guys.

advice?
A bit extreme.... lol

I'm 19 and I'm on day 2 at the moment, its pretty sore and i have a really annoying dull pain in my right ear, but im doing ok. Ive heard day 3 in the worse but to be honest im not botherd because one week of pain to a life time of not having tonsilitus again rocks totally!!!
Hey all...thanks for the common ground in suffering.

It's Sunday, and I had my tonsils taken out this past Tuesday. I'm 25 years old. Before the surgery, I'd heard everything from "you'll be back at it in a few days", to "be ready for 2 weeks of hell".

Right now is closer to the latter of the two. The night home from the hospital and even the day after gave me false hopes that maybe things would go alright. Pretty much every day since has gotten worse.

My tongue and uvula are swollen so that I feel like I've always got a loogy in the back of my throat, but when I try to bring it out, it's my own flesh, so I have to swallow it back down again.

Pretty much water is about all I can stand....not too hot or cold. Lukewarm soup broth is sometimes okay, and I licked the batter off the bowl for some cupcakes my wife was making. I stopped the serious pain medication, and have gone with Tylenol for 24 hours now, because we have a 7 month old, and I wanted to be able to help out still. God bless the people in our lives who have to deal with us during this pain. At least we get something out of all this. :-)

They told me it wouldn't affect my speaking voice at all....well, try talking with a swollen tongue/uvula....and you'll disagree. Still, I think it was worth it, to never have tonsellitis again. :-)
Hi there,

I am so sorry about all of those who are suffering - I don't doubt it. I'm 29, and I had a tonsillectomy 6 days ago. While it hasn't been a cake walk, it hasn't been the worst pain I've ever experienced, either. For me, day 1 (post-op) was ok, I kept up with the pain med (Lortab), and day 2 I was up and about the house all day, watching TV, emailing people, reading books. Day 3 was bad, though, with sore, dry throat and my neck feeling swollen, as well as a light ear-ache, especially on my right side (my right tonsil had the tonsillith problem worse than the left). I slept almost all day, as well as day 4. Days 5 and 6 are an improvement. I ate jello starting on day 2 (popsicles gave me mouth sores), and cream soup also on day 2. Now I'm able to eat some solid foods, although they are still soft (mac and cheese, tuna).

I think the thing that has helped me the most was drinking small sips of water every 10-15 minutes while awake (meaning don't wake up just to do this, and if you are caring for someone, don't force liquid into a sleeping person's mouth). It seems like a lot, but I swear that is what has helped make swallowing easier and much less painful than it could be. Good luck - I'm glad I did it, even though I think it will be another week before I'm totally back to normal.
I had my tosills out last june so it's been 9 months now and looking back i am sure that it was the best decidion ive ever taken!
My tonsils were always infected with that white pus even when i wasnt sick. so i always had bad breath and always felt fatigued and low on energy. Also i used to get sick with tonsilitis quite often and the antibiotics were really wearing me out. so finally i decided it was time after having been putting it off for several years cz i was afraid.
Going to the hospital was scary ofcourse but i had them gice me a pill to calm me down before being rolled into the OR and given the general anesthesia.
When i woke up in the hospital i was in pain ofcourse and the wordt thing was that i felt i was going to constantly choke because i felt there wasa lot of mucus at the back of my throat which ofcourse i couldnt cough away because it would tremendously hurt. About an hour after coming out they made me eat some ice cream which i now find out that is completely wrong to eat any dairy products and they gave me VANILLA ICE CREAM!! no wonder i was having trouble swalloing it and avoiding to choke! you should eat stuff like granitas not ice cream. a few hours later i went home and ofcourse i felt nauscious and wanted to vomit which is a normal reaction to the anesthesia. so ofcourse i did vomit and there was a lot of blood not because i was bleeding but it was the blood that i had swalloed during and after the surgery. ofcourse i was really scared when vomiting because first of all it hurt a lot and second i felt iw as going to choke cz i couldnt cough! it was very painful i could hardly open my mouth.

MY parents ofcourse wanted me to drink a lot and i was veryyy thirsty but didnt drink because of the pain but u really should drink to prevent your throat from being dry and hurting even more. the first 2days i had absoloutly nothing to eat just juices to drink(avoid citrus stuff such as oranges) then the were forcing me to eat and i started by having some warm soup and then a pice of soft bread soaked in the soup. Do not eat anything crunchy or with sharp edges because u will hurt urself. and do not feel pressured to eat lots of sold food because you dont want to take the scab off too early.

also you always read that drinkg very cold stuff is good but i actually found out that drinking warm stuff not hot is much better at least for me.
but the thing i most remember is the UVULA! its that dangling thing in the middle of ur throat . well it was huge! swallon !! at times i felt i was going to choke on it or swallow it while swallowing my salyva! seriously it was the second worst thing to the pain. anyways turns out this is normal and it take about a week to be of relatively normal size. so dont worry.

the pain yes it was horrible! like nothing u can imagine! seriously it was very very bad but when u take pain killers i took (volatren suppositories) because i didnt want to swallow any pills. it wa sthe best but ofcourse when the effect went away it was horrible again.

i would advise you not to look at your throat in the mirror ( i didnt) because u might get really disgusted of what you see. anyways teh good news is that after the surgery i now feel healthy and strong, no bad breath and no getting sick every month or so so it is just great! the pain and misery was all worth it. its just a matter of putting up with the pain for a week. so good luck and i hope i covered everything to help .
hi people, im on day 8 and im still not looking back. defo the best decision ive made. this was minor pain compare to some other things ive had. imagin someone cutting a slit in your throat. its just pretty raw meat for a week. the worse part was being hungry and not being able to eat the food really fast. oh well.... day 8 and im feel myself again.
Peice of cake having a tonsillectomy. Shame i couldnt eat cake after ha ha ha ha ha, no. i didnt find it very painful it that helps anyone
Oh My God I'm very very suprised to read that so many people have experiences here. I had my tonsils out August last year. The doctor used a harmonic blade which is meant to be better than a normal cold knife. I remember waking up having a sore throat. Its kind of funny getting put a sleep feeling ok to waking up feel totally sh*t. The pain was totally fine for the first 2 days. When i woke up on day 3 my throat was very dry and it really helped to drink cold water which numbed it for a while. Day 4 and 5 were the same. Just keep drinking and your all be fine.

Hey guys. I'm Chris, im 20 and from Australia. I had mine out 6 days ago and am only starting to feel some improvement now, it still bloody hurts though. I was fine until I went off the anti-inflammitorys and the last few days have been killers. The acute headaches and the ear pain has to be the worst for me not to mention swallowing. The Endone I am on is great, pity I can only have it twice a day. I have lost almost a kilo a day due to my diet of custard, water and jelly. Its funny how most people get on here around day 5 or 6, the curiosity must eventually get the better of us. If you want, add me on msn and we can wallow in our misery together. _[removed]_ or myspace.com/thisistopher

My daughter, 21, had her tonsils removed 7 days ago after two years of numerous bouts of strep. She is in the worst pain she has even been in. She is on Hydrocodone and has only eaten broth and popsicles. She has lost 10 lbs. which she didn't have to lose. This is not an easy surgery and I would only recommend it as a last resort.
I am on day 6 and I must admit I am in absolute agony today. For the last two nights I have woken up at 4 or 5 am in real pain. I only have a day or so left of pain killers and dont know what I am going to do. I have been eating normally ever since I had the operation (I had McDonalds McChicken Nuggets the day of my operation) and have been eatig Pizza, Toast, Rice, Yorkshire Pudding, Chicken Breat, Cornflakes and Weetabix but it is getting worse.

I have just had a look and I have white stuff covering where I had them taken out. I have no idea what an infection looks like, it hasn't bled but I am concerned. Should it be this painful? How do I know if I have an infection?

Also to make matters worse I have had my uvula cut off at the same time!

Can someone please assure me this is going to get better!
I am on day 7 and it has gotten progressively worst. Day 7 is unbearable. I feel there are huge ulcers. This is huge pain. can't sleep
Hi All

I had my surgery on the 29th of March. This is my 5th day or night and it is very painful. The day of the surgery was fine with some vomiting right after... but the rest of the day went smoothly. I started feeling better the day after that. The second and the third went with a manageable pain.
I had read earlier that there is a relapse for most around a week.
Imagine my surprise when i woke up last night with the most awful pain there was. I thought it was an infection and scooted to the doctor. Luckily it was all Ok - i have tried lukewarm stuff like mashed potatoes and some clear soup (no spices) but prefer the cooler dishes. I have found chewing on ice to be a real soother. But today was the pits. The pain was incredible to the point where i was gripping the sides of my chair until my knuckles grew white. I don't know how long the ''relapse pain'' lasts. I hope it is not more than a few days. I have a fairly high tolerance for pain - but this is ridiculous. I am on painkillers that i take every four hours. It helps for a couple of hours and then i freeze for the other two with no sudden movements. Again, what helps is colder eats like popsicles - not lime and orange though. I will post again when my peak is over as i want to record the duration of this relapse pain.
