I had my tonsils and adenoids removed yesterday. I have had MASSIVE pain... I am so afraid of what lies ahead after reading everyone's posts.
I can't swallow anything... as everyone has stated. I haven't looked in my mouth... but everytime I swallow... I could swear I feel my stitches going down the back of my throat! I am hoping this is all worth while.. but right now... I'm regretting every minute of it.

Whoever says there is nothing to this surgery is JUST LUCKY... or don't want to scare you! I am VERY tolerant to pain... I have had 2 C-sections... slit almost 8 inches across TWICE ... with no pain medication afterwards... and passed SEVERAL kidney stones (ouchy, I actually cried)! And if I had this to do all over again.... I would have NEVER had this done. I would rather deal with the tonsillitiss!
Thank god I found this site- thought I was going insane because the pain has been nuts! At least I know I'm not nuts!

hey...im on my sixth day after my tonsillectomy and i guess it affects people differently because this is no problem for me. I mean there is pain but not as bad as the peritonsillor absess that I suffered from a few months ago. With the absess, I could not talk at all and I was throwing up water. I knew then, that it was time to go to the hospital. The only thing thats killing me is that I am sooo bored and I want to go out and lay in the sun but my mom and the doc said that I could get overheated, but I am drinking at least 10bottles of water a day. I really dont think Im gonna get dehydrated. I would be more dehydrated over a hangover than laying out in the sun!Hope this gives hope to you who think that this horrible..its not..i have had soo much more pain than this!
I'm on day 8 of my recovery journey and its no picnic. Trying to eat and drink in the earlier days was excruiating, it felt like I was swallowing sandpaper and razor blades. Things have subsided today and am not in too much pain. Sleep has been very random. Anyone out there suffering I wish yo wll and SOON.
FYI.... Lortab is a generic name for Vicodin, it is a liquid form
My daughter is 3 and a half years old and had her tonsils and adenoids out 8 days ago. Her tonsils were kissing and so big that she choked on food , snored like an adult, and had sleep apnea. She is on tylenol with codeine every four hours, but even so, day 6 and 7 were so horribly agonizing for her that I worried seeing her in such pain. Her headaches were so bad that she held her head wirh her hands and cried and started spitting mucus out of her mouth to avoid swallowing. We were up the past few nights every 3 hours as the codeine wears off and she kicks and cries to avoid having to swallow more. She's also very aggressive.

The first 5 days I was fooled into thinking she was improving every day. She was even wanting to eat toast and cereal. But, from what I have read, it seems that everyone gets in the worst pain right around the one week post-op point. We did. Day 8 has been better, though she 's not eating much. We are still keeping the pain meds up before they wear off and pushing the fluids My heart goes out to all in pain and those mothers and fathers watching their babies suffer!
Hello fellow sufferers,

I am going to chime in here about my experience getting my tonsils out.

I am 37 and I regularly get throat infections. I am constantly gargling apple cider vinegar, Cheyenne powder and lemon juice with salt to avoid colds and sore throats which plague me usually 10-12 times a year. I got so sick of it all, I got my tonsils out on July 27, 2007.

What an ordeal.

I can't fault the doctor. He told me it would be bad. Very bad. But like most people, I said 'How bad can it be?'. As an adult, it is the single worse experience I have ever had, pain-wise. I dreaded going to sleep because the next morning taking the T3 was some of the worst pain I have had to experience.

During the days, I only started to feel good about 7:30ish and I watched TV and went to bed around midnight each night, always worrying about the next day.

Day 7 - The scabs are coming off. This morning taking the T3 had me close to tears. I am hoping that by the end of today, I can eat something - I am very hungry.

For me, I tried one popsicle and one scoop of ice cream - all made me very sore and angry. From there, I had 6 days of sipping ginger-ale (NOT FLAT - the carbonation helps with thinning out the mucus and saliva), luke-warm tap water and 1 ensure nutrient drink a day (when I could handle it).

I wouldn't recommend this anyone - only if they are fast healers and have a high threshold to pain. I had heard that the older you get, the worse it gets - I believe it. I am saddened to hear when young children get it and their pain lasts a long time, it is not right.

My fear is that is grows back. I won't go through it again, but I am hoping that the surgeon got everything the first time and it won't even thinking about growing back.

Another thing I should have done in advance and will do this next time I have a surgery is book some hypnosis and acupuncture appointments. I would assume that a combination of these would really help control the pain.
I'm on day 6 after my tonsillectomy and I'm in terrible pain when I swallow, eat, drink and talk. It's the worst when I wake up. Right now - my tonque is layered with a yellow mucusy skin and I spit to avoid swallowing.

As for the guy refering to all of us complaining of the pain and don't use the internet as your source of info ~ clearly all people heal at different rates. But I know I feel less crazy after reading the post from the 44 yr old big guy who was over his sink crying because it hurts so much. I, too, have always known myself to have a higher tolerance for pain. So I'm really surprised at how unbearable this is.

Everything hurts my throat. EVERYTHING.

I am two weeks after my tonsillectomy, and i feel wonderful. I must admit it did hurt at first, and I was in pain for the first week. Mornings were increasingly difficult, but I'm hoping in the long run that it's worth it. If you are supposed to be getting a tonsillectomy, I can honestly say it wasn't that bad. Sure I was in pain immediately after. it is after all a surgery. Don't let people tell you its horrible, and it depends on your healing speed. Good luck:)
i just got my tonsils out 2 days ago and the pain isnt bad at all. it actually isnt any worst than a sore throat. Italian ice helps alot.. am i suppose to loose weight, im 5'8 125 and havnt been eating bc of this??
I had my tonsils removed on August 9th. I'm still not able to eat solid food and I'm so hungry. My worst pain was around days 5-7. The severe ear pain was the worst pain I have ever felt in my life. Right before that I had a short period of time where I was able to eat a little soup and mashed potatoes. I thought I was getting better. Boy was I wrong o.O Right now I'm sitting here starving and miserable trying to eat ice cream. I have a blood clot thing thats hanging off the left side and it hangs down a little into my throat. Is this normal? It's been making me feel sick. Also my uvula has been so swollen that it hangs down my throat. When I sleep on my back I have to make sure my head is tilted to one side or else it gets in the way of my breathing. I'd have to say my pain is the worst now just when I wake up. I still have to take the tyelnol with codeine so I can try to eat. I've been living on ice cream, popsicles, pudding, and some ensure. I still can't speak too well, but I think it's because I am still swollen. I have my follow up appointment in the afternoon and wonder if I will be able to return to work (I'm not ready to!)
Hey... I'm 22 years old, and I've been reading all these posts before and after my surgery.
I had my tonsils removed on August 15, today being the 18th makes it about 3 days. Although, I tell myself it's 4 if I count the day of surgery. The pain picked up yesterday and today. My tongue is swollen, and the holes where my tonsils were are now covered in white gook. Swallowing is equivalent to my worst case of tonsillitis, with the addition of a painful tongue, and uvula that is pretty damn LARGE. I heard that the pain peaks days 3-6, so hopefully today is the worst. I've been able to eat jello, yogurt, pudding, italian ices, ramen noodles, mac n cheese, and of course the constant drinking of ice water.
I try not to eat often as I usually pay for it after the pain killers (tylenol/codeine, and some of my mom's vicodin) wear off. I don't know if i would recommend this surgery just yet, although if this is the last big bout i will face with sore throats, then so be it. Good luck to everyone else who will be going for a tonsillectomy. I will post on here the next few days so anyone in the future can check out my progress.
I wrote the previous post, just giving and update. I had my surgery on Wednesday August 15th, making today Day 4. The pain has only gotten worse. Cold foods are becoming increasingly unbearable, and I have resorted to jello, the occasional ramen noodle, and room temperature water. I have begun to take the painkillers (tylenol with codeine) more frequently (every 3 hours instead of every 4). Today marked the first day of this spasm like ear pain. The pain originates only on the right side, which happens to be the scarred area that is causing the most pain, and it shoots straight up to my ear drum. I have been countering that, and a sore neck with a bag of ice. The ice numbs everything, and also cools off the heat that's emanating from the surgery area. I've lose over 5 pounds so far. I should also mention that my tongue is still swollen, and the taste buds are starting to get screwed up with this constant film of white covering my tongue. Alright, I'll update again tomorrow.
Day 5 (Post Op.)- This is my third post. Today was by far the worst pain, I woke up at 330AM with sharp pain now in both ears and my right scarred area throbbing. I was literally shaking in pain this time. I took some codeine with tylenol and went back to sleep an hour after. When I woke up the pain was still pretty painful. This time i took a vicodin, and that really helped numb the pain for 4 hours, before I needed another one. The pain is getting sharper and more consistent. I hope I'm nearing some kind of peak, because I have still yet to eat anything hard than ramen soup. I have been relying on a multi-vitamin and ensure in the mornings, and i try to keep drinking room temp. water throughout the day. On the positive side, Im not bleeding.
