I have this. At first I thought I was having an arthritis episode of some sort, and simply though I had some chocolate dippin dots on my hands after a day at the zoo with my kids. 2 weeks later the chocolate turns out to be bruising on the back of my hands, concentrated around the index finger joint and wrapping down toward the base of the thumb. The day after I could barely move I was so stiff. I am active and I regularly run 20 miles per week at a minimum, 34 year old white male. I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis at age 15-16, but do not take anything for it and seems to have been at bay for a while. This particular episode left my hands useless and extremely sensitive to touch. Fine the next day. Very very strange.

So. Glad to know I am not the only one. I feel I am very lucky to be very healthy and was concerned about this little issue that keeps occurring. Because I am normally very healthy, I do not know what to stress about. So...you are all ok and it is nothing to be concerned about. I will not let it concern me. Thanks for posting.

And...I have had similar symptoms while outside on spring days. It is not spring now. I have this symptom on only my index finger (this time) and it is just an annoyance. In case anyone else is concerned...it is still OK.

i too had sudden bruising in my finger, first it was like i had a nettle in my finger (similar Pain) when i without thought scratched it. the pain grew prompting me to look down and i'll be darn if it wasn't bruising up right in front of my eyes. i searched for answers for no other reason than how weird the whole thing was. i believe this was a broken blood vessel and this is an answer that i found as a possible reason. Most of the time the breaks occur when you do something that "milks" the finger like lifting a heavy pail with a round handle or wrapping your hand around an object and the blood it squeezed to the tip with no where to go.

Today I felt a stinging sensation on my index finger and watched as the bruise developed before my eyes . .I hadn't been bitten or doing anything to merit a bruise so was a bit worried as this is the first time this has happened to me. Interesting to see so many people reporting similar . .Have read what I can but doesn't offer any obvious answers . .Interestingly I am due blood tests tomorrow as I am also experiencing heavy blood loss through periods at the moment and wondering if this is linked to low iron levels or anemia?

Thank you so much, this really help me out! I've been experiencing this for the last couple of years. I'm a 56 year old female non-smoker but I do drink quite a bit of wine (about 10 glass poet week)

I experience this in my hands only - usually the middle and ring finger and it always occurs right at the joint. There's a sharp pain followed by bruising which usually clears up in a day or two. There's no activity or injury that brings it on.

It's some point might be interesting to note if other people who experienced this and drink alcohol. I'm wondering because I know it thins the blood. My blood pressure is low my cholesterol is low and my weight is average for 5 foot 8".

Adding the personal details in case it helps somebody figure something out. Seems to be intermittent where I will go months without issue and then it will occur several times within a week.

Thanks everyone for their post on this blog and I gotta say I love the internet for exactly reasons like this!

I have experienced sudden bruising to my fingers and now on the boney parts of my palm. The pain is sudden a bit like a bite and then the area creates a blue bruise. It is painful for about 24 hours and then disappears. I am female aged 55. Would welcome any further advice info on this.

I am 59 yo female. I have HBP and take Norvasc. I was taking pretty hefty Omega-3 supplements and all of a sudden I had 3 or 4 Achenbach finger and upper palm "stings" (first time I was reading outside and thought I was bit by a bee because it stung. Did not swell up so I ignored it. When I looked later my finger was blue from the tip to the knuckle). After a bit of research I stopped the Omegas and it never happened again. BUT then I got Raynaud's Phenomenon which a few studies say omega-3s would help and Norvasc will make worse. AARRGG. I do have low vitamin D levels (I take 5k a day) and high A1C and shitty sugar metabolism and even tho I try to eat right and take supplements - I guess I am going to fall apart one digit at a time. Will have to look into Vitamin K which I know has to do with vitamin D absorption.

I have a bruise on the palm side, on the lower part of my index finger & part of palm for no apparent reason. It was hurting bad one week and this appeared the next. I didn't hurt it in anyway.

I experienced this a day or two ago. I did not injure it in any way, was driving and had a sudden pain in my ring finger on my left hand (not my writing hand) like a sting. When I looked down, right above the first joint closest to my palm was black and blue and faded slightly a few hours later. I still have a dull pain. I am a 50 year old female and remember this happening one time before a couple years ago maybe. Would love to know what causes it and if it's a sign of something worse, but I have to say, I am glad I am not the only one experiencing this.

I have the same problem It started 4 weeks ago, I had to get my rings cut off, went to the emergency dept. where I was told I had Raynauds system. The did not do any blood work, gave me some nasty pills. I wnet to see my Doctor, she sended me to a Vascular Specialist, who took Ultra Sound, xrays and blood work and said every thing is normal no circulation or blood clot problems. He had no answer.
I also had my Heart doctor, check me out all sort of test were done and came back normal. Now I am having my Neurosurgeon check me out,, because I had back surgery 3 years ago. Sofar I don't know what is wrong.

I experience this exact thing. In fact, I just did about 20 minutes ago and googled it to see what it might be. I did see that this could be a symptom of Osteoarthritis. It has happened before, as you said about once, maybe twice a year and the same finger and joint, index right hand first joint. Coincidence?? It is concerning.

This just happened to me!! I believe it's possibly Achenbach Syndrome. Nothing to worry about, but will still visit my doctor this morning to rule out anything else.
