I'm so greatful that you all felt you could share your problems on this forum. It has really made me feel at ease. Ive had this Mirena IUD for 3.5 years and for the last 2 years I've been noticing this funky smell. It isn't really nasty, but like some of you have described, it's kind of an ammonia type smell. It isn't pleasant. I never thought it could be my IUD until now. I'm prone to yeast infections, but nothing serious like BV. I was starting to think the worst until i stumbled upon this site and all you ladies have calmed my nerves. So Thank you. I am planning to get mine removed as my husband and I are going to start trying for a baby. So I'll keep you all posted if there is a change....PLEASE GOD LET THERE BE A CHANGE!

Okay, I am so extremely thankful that I found this forum. I just spent over $50 in vaginal hygiene products at the store today, because I had to leave school (college) due to the horrendous ODOR! I've had the Mirena IUD since about September, so about five months. I first noticed the smell when I was sitting in class about a month and a half ago. I didn't even know it was coming from me. I secretly blamed it on the classmates sitting around me. I thought someone had really bad gas! After the continuing annoyance of the haunting odor, I slowly came to realize that it was coming from me! Since then I have done everything to stay as clean as possible (even more so than usual) in hopes that it would just go AWAY! Then today at school, two girls next to me complained that something smelled, and I just KNEW it was ME! I was so mortified I grabbed all my things and literally RAN for the door! I was almost in tears! I can't deal with this any more! I've worried for weeks now that I've had yeast infections, STD's, and everything else under the moon! I just decided this evening to do some research online to see if there was any correlation between this odor and an upset in my normal ph balance, and what could be causing it, because there is no itch, and no burn. Thank god I found this forum!
This Mirena is SO OUT OF HERE! I'm making an appointment tomorrow to have it removed! Then maybe I won't be afraid to sit in class for fear of people being offended by my nasty smell!

Ok so I hear all the fishy smells.. but my smell is weird. I have have the 10 year copper iud for about 9 months now. The last two periods I have had I noticed when I take out my tampon.. I get this rotten tooth smell.. I change my tampon every hour to every two hours, so i'm not keeping it in for a long time to allow a smell like that to cultivate.. could it be the iud.. there is no other symptoms and only when i'm on my period.. it's so weird?? :$
Thank goooooooooooooodness gracious that I've found this forum. I too am experiencing a fishy smell. Mainly it occurs after my husband and I have had sex, and naturally we do not use protection as that was the main reason for the IUD. But I notice for a couple days after sex my discharge is thicker than usual and smell of a 7 day old salmon has been lost inside my uterus. Quite disgusting, I know. Before the iud I never had any smells, and I also never had sex unprotected. However, it appears that the IUD may be the root of the smell. Although i've read in other forums that it also may be due to the mans semen and the smell comes from his semen and not from the vagina, and ways that he can control that is through diet. Hmmmmm, interesting, no? After the couple of days after sex, I no longer smell the fishy smell, but there is quite a strong copper, metal smell and I am sure that my husband can taste it during oral sex. And that, I know, comes from the copper. What to do, what to do. As someone else wrote- so much for going hormone free!
I've had a copper IUD for about 3 months now. I don't want to give it up..but the smell is not something I can live with, either. I've been taking zinc every day, because I read somewhere that zinc counteracts copper...? (I don't remember exactly what I read anymore or where I read it..and there is actually nickel in the copper IUD, too) --Anyway, the zinc seemed to help for a while. But the smell is definitely back.
I've heard that acidophilus is supposed to help (along with yogurt, maybe tea tree oil and other things). I've read that it can be inserted vaginally and/or taken orally but am still looking around to see how much one should take..? I've also read that folic acid helps, but again - I've had a hard time finding information that isn't purely anecdotal for either of these. (Anyone have better answers?)
I was diagnosed with BV once before I had my IUD inserted, so I'm pretty sure that's what I have. I don't really want to start a cycle of endless antibiotics for an infection that could be recurrent, and I don't have health insurance right now anyway, so it wouldn't be an option for me.
Can anyone share info on how much acidophilus/folic acid to take..what has worked?

I am having a similar problem. My husband has not said anything but I smell when changing clothes or standing up. I never had this problem before and I do not have any other problems. I have had my IUD for almost a year and been having the smell for about three months. Anything that can help?
Hi Girls...
Hopes out there, you don't have anything wrong with you e.g. std.
I have had my iud out for 2 days, after 3 years with it in. I had the nasty smell along with a yellow discharge for the entire 3 years. One day after removal....no smell and nasty discharge....woohoo.
I am not sure why we get these stinky things happen, but I do know there is nothing wrong, it's all caused by the IUD.

i have the Paragard (copper) iud. i noticed the same thing. i think it is the smell of the copper. because i noticed the blood smells while i am having my period. i noticed a smell i thought was vinegar but now that i read these posts i think it may be like an ammonia or something like that. it was so bad i thought it was a chemical i spilled in the bathroom i realized it was from the garbage it was the dirty tampon! i notice a very light different smell in the urine / discharge in between periods but the strongest is the blood smell. i think it's because the copper does release some chemical in order to prevent pregnancy and the blood soaks in the copper all month then the period lets all the blood out so the blood smells very strong.
The smell was like a dead cat in my pants. Dogs were sticking their nose in my crotch at friend's houses. My mood was altered - I became irrational. My blood pressure skyrocketed in just a mere 4 days.
The SMELL alone shows that your body is rejecting the expensive consumer product that you lodge in your uterus.
I had it taken out right away, I wasn't going to mess around my body. I would recommend to anyone to do the same.
You don't want to "WIN" the lousy 5% Mirena lottery of adverse reactions.

I have a Mirena IUD. I have had it for 3 1/2 years now. I bleed for 2 month straight when I first had it inserted. Then every since then I spot on and off. It may be red one day, pink the next and then brown the next. Very unpredictable!! I associated the smell with old blood like period smell but then I would have it every couple of months. Especially after my husband and I have sex. I went to the doctor about the smell and every test I had came back negative. No BV, no STD's, no yeast infection...nothing!! So in other words, they were saying I had to live with this smell. I CAN'T!! It is disgusting. So I did a lot of research on my own and my best friend is a RN and she told me to try to flushing my vagina with Peroxide. OMG!! That is the answer to all of our prayers. I bought a big syringe (kinda like the one you inject turkeys with:) of course without the needle. You can also do this with and empty douche bottle. I take a little disposable bathroom cup (like the cups you rinse with after you brush your teeth) and I fill it up 1/2 with warm water and 1/2 with peroxide. Then I fill the syringe with the mixture. Before I take a shower or bath, I squirt it inside and it will rinse all of that nasty stuff out. I usually do it twice. If you read about this, the peroxide neutralizes the PH level in your vagina. It is actually good for you. AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, IT REMOVES THE SMELL IMMEDIATELY!! It is the only thing that has helped me, especially when I thought there was no hope. I hope this helps someone else dealing with this.
I agree with CariFairy, I have had bacterial vaginosis and was having an unpleasant odor in my discharge. It is unsure why woman get it. It has something to do with the amount of bad bacteria in your vagina. It is real simple to cure, just a prescription is all. But then again, discharge with odor could be a number of things.
Try RePHresh!!!!!! It works wonders! I read it on this thread last night and tried and my smell is gone. I never thought I would ever get away from that smell. I have had my IUD since November and the smell started a few weeks ago and was driving me bonkers! I am going to live by RePHresh now.
I was starting to wonder if there was something really wrong with me. The smell is disgusting - like a mix of rotting flesh and something chemical, like ammonia. I had every single test done - blood work, swabs and even an ultra. They found nothing wrong with me, except a case of BV which was cleared up with medication, but the smell came back.
I called Mirena to ask about the possibility of the smell being casued by Mirena. The the phrmacist they put me through said she didn't know - she had no data on this. Neither did my so-called gyno here in Chicago; But type IUD and Odor into google and you get no less than 159,000 hits, ladies. This should have been explained to me as a possible side affect, given its prevalence among women, espcially those of us prone to BV or yeast infections, you not think? Bastards.

You may have a normal vaginal bacteria buildup, which was what I had and I was put on Metronidazole for 7 days and let me just say that by day 2 or 3 after taking the meds it was cleared. This is the same meds they prescribe for BV, Trich, Vaginitis, etc. Ask your doc about it...ask him or her about possibility of coidal (spelling may be off) cells possibly causing odor. Trust me I know, that c**p is so annoying...
