Glad you found the source of your pain
I am getting severe muscle cramps in my upper left abdomen usually...sometimes on the right side. This actually started when I had right wrist surgery and had to use my left side more.including the thing that sparked it...embarrassingly...having to wipe myself with my left hand instead of right..It feels like a Charlie horse in one of the stomach muscles..I have to stand up or lay down immediately and if I could bend backwards more I would..I can palpate the muscle in my upper abdomen just below the ribcage and it feels knitted up..I do have an abnormal curvature of my spine but I believe it is called lordosis where your back bends backwards..I can not arch my mid back at all. My abdomen is weak as I haven't worked out in a while so maybe I need to do stomach crunches to strengthen....does anyone out there know what to do or what this is?
This actually sounds like you might have a hernia.
I did not find the source. Where did you get that from?
No, I do not have hernias all over my body. The cramps happen in my abdomen, my upper and lower back, my thighs, my arms and my neck. I think it is caused by some vitamin or mineral deficiency but I don't know what. Since I take all the vitamins I am supposed to I think it is something that my body does not use correctly.
I am a 57 year old woman and these unbearable stomach cramps started about five years ago. For me they always happen as I get out of bed. It starts with a severe spasm in the middle of my upper abdomen and can last all day if it is a bad one.it all depends how quickly or sharply I tried to get out if bed.it is the twisting action that always triggers the attack. For several days afterwards my stomach feels bruised.i have to lie down for however long is needed, take painkillers and wait until the pain subsides a bit.so glad I'm not alone in this.doc hasn't a clue.
Me too!!! No one ever knows what this is
I get the same thing at least 2 to 3 times a week and it varies from right to left side. I don't know where they come from or the root. But when they hit u crouch down and force the muscles tI get rid of them but they will go away and spasm back and last for 20 mins or more....i wish I knew what caused them...
I've had this happen to me about four times in the past year. The first time I was watching TV and laughing hysterically. The next few times it was after a shower when I was trying to dress bending to put on socks or underwear. It's a severe muscle cramp-like pain that feels like my something is trying to bulge out of my stomach. once it subsides I feel fine. It definitely feels similar to a leg cramp. I am overweight, I drink and I'm fifty. Haven't discussed it with my physician however I think it's from having weak stomach muscles and perhaps gas. I don't think it could be Lyme disease but I have had tick bites.
I get these too unfortunately. They are scary and excruciating. Normally set off by sneezing, a sudden change in position or trying to get up laying down, had one from a orgasm while I was more standing up. Sometimes I will feel one come on in my lower left abdomen when laying on my back after a sneeze and if I stretch back enough it goes away but for a few weeks I have a bloated feeling like it may happen again in certain position like sitting back in my car where it scares me, can't sneeze, cough, or laugh hard. I have never gotten one lying on my stomach or sneezing standing straight up so if you watch something funny it may be a good idea to lay on your stomach or stand straight up, I have not gotten any sitting straight up. Wish there was a answer or cure for this but it seems the medical community has no interest in solving it, most doctors don't even know what you are talking about. A few weeks to months may go by where I don't get any from sneezing or doing anything but once one hits it just feels weird in my abdomen for weeks off and on like it may happen again suddenly.
I get these awful spasms in the abdomen/stomach area too. I had a gunshot wound in the left upper back about 15 years ago and had two ribs removed, doctors did exploratory surgery with slice through stomach area to make sure no pellets hit lower organs. I have recovered very well though, run several miles, lift weights, very healthy, no issues.
I noticed these abdominal spasms about 7 years ago, happened when I was bent over or in weird position working on car when I sneezed. Very scary and painful and have to straighten my self out and wait a few seconds before it went away. They were very rare though but have been more common over the past 2 years. One set off by sitting in car and turning and looking back suddenly when someone honked at me, one happened during a orgasm while I was standing up and either bent down or arching my back, one or two happened when I was laying on the couch or bed and went to get up mostly using stomach/abdomen to rise. I had one happen when I was seated on a ride and quickly got up to move into a different seat and it was bad, almost had to get off the ride but I rode it out and it went away, I was tired that day. Last full one was very painful, the cramp/charley horse normally lasts for about 20 seconds to about 45 but it is excruciating and scary. Normally starts from lower left center abdominal area and can work its way up a few inches. I thought it might be a organ or intestine going out of place but people I have talked to said that is not it and it would not be a sudden excruciating pain and then just goes away from stretching, it is almost certainly a muscle spasm/charley horse in your abdomen.
After the last full one I had around last Christmas I would feel a weird sensation in my abdomen in certain positions for a few months like I am full, bloated, something is twisted a little and that it is about to happen again but doesn't, it usually goes away when laying flat on my back but then comes back every now and then.
This spring I sneezed while driving and felt it about to spasm, I can identify the sensation before it is about to happen. I panicked and pulled over and kept pushing my stomach out and never went into full spasm but it felt like it was about to for several hours, when I got home lying on my stomach or back usually provided relief but then when standing or sitting in certain positions it would feel on the verge of about to possibly spasm and it makes me anxious and nervous. It happened again when I sneezed lying on my back with my head raised slightly. Again on the verge but I was able to stop it from going into full spasm. After that I would get a very bloated feeling at times especially after eating, sitting in car for any period of time, driving a golf cart and getting in and out, a couple times it was really bad like I ate a full meal and had gas I could not pass and had to leave a golf trip early, the only relief was laying on my back and then stomach, burping or passing gas helped, but mostly lying on my back made it go right away. I was flexing my stomach muscle a lot because that felt like it gave me control over it and it almost feels like something may fall out of place if I don't flex and cause another spasm. Normally if I flex my stomach muscle it seems to not happen, only happens when not paying much attention and not thinking about it. I was about to go see a doctor because it was really scaring me and the sensations were becoming unbearable but after reading about there seems to be no answers so I might just be wasting time and money, then it seemed to start getting better, I did pray a little, I started taking more Mag. Potassium supplements and fruit, drank coconut water, and a little tonic water. Took a long trip over the summer and made it fine which I was worried it was going to happen on the highway but did not, while on vacation I felt perfectly fine, after I got back I felt fine for a few months, sneezing did not cause anything until about 4 or 5 weeks ago when again laying in bed on my back with head raised I felt it about to spasm after a sneeze but stopped it from going into full spasm but arching my back and breathing differently, over past few weeks have had odd full, bloated sensations but not too bad, sometimes it feels like organs maybe in odd position in that area when accelerating in car, sitting back in certain positions, felt nervous that a sudden cough or laugh in certain positions might trigger it again. I do get a odd sensation and the gym when doing sitting angled dead lifts with heavier weights like something is pushing into my stomach/pressure and could possibly trigger a spasm but it has never happened.
I have noticed when going to the bathroom, burping, or passing gas it does provide some relief to the bloated feeling but that is normal I guess. When I clench my stomach muscles I don't seem to have any problems when lifting weights, doing crunches or other abdominal exercises(I have tried to avoid full situps to avoid another possible spasm, and running seems to help with some symptoms and anxiety. It is normally when I do something sudden and did not prepare for a possible spasm when it happens. Its seems to be pretty position related for me, does not happen when seated straight up, standing up, or lying on stomach, lying on back or stomach seems to provide relief from any bloating feeling, passing gas seems to help more. I do take several supplements but only recently started taking potassium, I don't take supplements every day. I drink about a glass or 2 of water per day, I am male in my 30's, always have been relatively thin with a athletic build, have always been active, I am strong for my size and I have no gut and have okay abs, have a pretty high metabolism, get the jittery leg many times when sitting still. I do drink 2 cups of caffeinated tea and occasionally soda but eat relatively healthy. I do suffer from migraines every now and then but not as much after taking B2 Riboflavin, Calc/Mag/Zinc, and Fish Oil. Most times I feel perfectly fine but this issue is scary especially if it happens when I am driving/defending myself, or some other situation where I need full movement, if I am tired it seems to happen more, the bloating/odd full feelings or feeling something out of place in gut area seem to happen after I have a spasm for a couple weeks but then at other times I feel perfectly fine.
I wish there was a cure but it does not seem like the medical community has much interest in addressing this. Maybe upping Potassium, Magnesium, Calcium supplements, water intake and perhaps other supplements/salts/electrolytes could help but I think it could possibly be something else like a void where 2 ribs were removed and affects from exploratory surgery. Wonder if muscle relaxers would help or certain exercises?

I too have these spasms. The come when I am lying down and bring me to a standings position. They hurt really bad and are sore for days after. Has any explanation for this ever been given?
Hi there I have had these twinges for 25 yrs+ as I've got older, had children, gained weight, two C sections and two central core hernia operations my follow up surgeon is believing this is to b gallstones - waiting for ultrasound to confirm
Hi all,
I too had these cramps. A couple times I had to lay down in the aisle at the grocery store. The pain is scary! I also noticed my poop were in small balls, as if my intestines were contracting a lot. I heard eating dairy may be a problem, especially cheese. So I stopped eating dairy, and the spasms went away. I also became a vegetarian, and started having big complete, easy bowell movements. It was a relief. After no dairy, and no cramps for 5 years, I decided to eat dairy again, and more recently added meat. I felt I needed more protein in my diet. Along with the cheese, occasional cramps came back. Cheese seems to really affect my digestion, and I believe from my experience is related to the cramps. Also we need 8 to 10 glasses of water a day. Many people are chronically dehydrated which makes it hard for the systems of the body to function as well. Things get tight. Maybe if you cut out cheese and drink more h20, the cramps will go away.? Worth a shot.

Like all of you I have this pain, it happened two weeks after my c-section when I stretched quite forcefully in bed. I've been to the doctors numerous times and I keep going back with my own diagnosis. I'm now thinking it may be ACNES - Anterior cutaneous nerve entrapment syndrome. I will be going to the doctors and asking to be examined for this as it is under diagnosed yet seems to a cause of a lot of undiagnosed abdominal pain complaints.
