I had a lap assisted hysterectomy just at four weeks ago. During the procedure, because of an immense amount of endometriosis, my ureter was cut. They immediately put a stent in the ureter, where it will remain for six weeks. They will take out the stent in two weeks, after the ureter has had time to heal. It's been painful but should work ok.
has anybody had any luck with compensation for the cutting of the ureter?4
I had a stent in after ureter was cut during lap assisted hysterectomy. It was the most god-awful pain I have ever experienced. The stent was removed, and I was told I'd feel ever so much better. No such luck--here I am, several days post-stent removal, and have a temp of almost 102, and have the worst back pain (BOTH kidneys are just throbbing) and a nurse practitioner on call advising that advil might be a good idea. Forget the Percocet...they took that away a while back.
I mean, it was their fault! And I'm the one in agony. At 39 years old no less, with small children and a husband...it is so frustrating!

WOW - I'm glad to see I'm in company with a lot of other people who have had the same hysterectomy issues that I am currently suffering from.
I had an oopherectomy +tubes/cervix on 3/22/10 (uterus alone came out 2/09) - That was a Monday. On Saturday, I began to leak/gush urine and at first I thought it was incontinence and/or bladder prolapse, but after a CT on Monday 3/29, it was determined that my uterer had been cut (by the harmonic scalpel, so my ob/gyn did not see that it had happened before closing me up.)
I had a stent put in the Thursday before Easter. It seemed to be working at first (very little leakage), but then progressively, the leaking started up again, a little at first and then on and off it's almost the same amount that it was pre-op. (Example: This week - Tuesday it was gushing, Wednesday was mostly okay, Thursday it was gushing (this is a week after the stent placement), Friday/Saturday were mostly okay and tonight (Sunday) I am gushing again.)
Could the stent have completely failed? Or is it possible that it healed some, then got worse again and again will need to heal more?
I'm so confused on all of this uretal stent stuff and I can't find a lot of information online. I go to see the urologist again tomorrow and I am going to BEG (demand perhaps even) that he follows through with a uretal re-implantation surgery and if he refuses to do it and wants to mess around with more stents and nephrostomy bags, etc - I am going to get my ob/gyn to refer me to another urologist. I can NOT work with bags hanging out of me (I'm currently a teacher) and as mentioned above, I need to be healthy by May 24th to start a VERY intensive nursing program.
*Huge Sighs* - Sorry to the rest of you having these same issues :-(

Where to start???
I went in for a "routine hysterectomy" I was suppose to be there in the hospital for a maxium of three days for recovery... 2 pints of blood and 6 days later I was released from the hospital!!
During the TAH the doctor cut my right Ureter tied it in a knot and cut out 3/4 of my bladder not only did she not report any of this in her report but NONE of my bladder was sent to pathology so they were not aware either.
She sewed me back up, after putting in the report all had been throughly cleaned with Sterile Saline and no blood found, report states all items accounted for but later had a Foreign Object removed in between her sewing me up and the ~2~ Urologist opening me back up, they had to put in a stent in the left Ureter to make sure it didnt become injured and the right one to try and save it!!
The second Urologist truely saved my life he took what was left of my bladder and made what he could out of it! Then he removed part of the bladder that was DEAD FROM BEING SEWED TO MY VAGINAL WALL!! I came out of surgery 7 1/2 hours later not knowing anything was wrong, I had ~2~ leg bags to hold the urine from the ~2~ catheters and a suprapubic tube coming out of my body!!
Needless to say 1 1/2 years later and many more surgeries I still do not have feeling to go pee it just happens!!!
My Urologist said my nevers are fine but my muscles around my bladder spasm and work against each other, nothing can be done to fix this!!

My Mother at age 70 had a vag hyster with bladder lift and had her ureter sutured shut and then burst after 5 days. It took much longer to be diagnosed. She went in to septic shock and in ICU for month they found the problem same as others had nephrostomy tube then her ureter repaired. Never felt right then after a cysto. Became septic again do to infection still there. Finally it was repaired year later. I believe anyone that has had this happen will always be prone to Urinary and Kidney infections. She now is in ICU 10 yrs later septic again from a bladder infection. Prior to this infection her only symptom was nausea and didnt feel good. Want to warn all of you do not dismiss not feeling good or subtle signs of a UTI and get treated early. Get a urine test if you dont feel good or nauseated for a few days. This last UTI she waited to long. You do not want to end up with urosepsis or septicemia. She does seem to be responding to antibiotic treatment but is still not out of the woods. Please be careful..You very well could always be prone to bad infections in the future. Good Luck
Hi I'm 30 years old and had the same thing happen. I went in for a Hysterectomy in June and the Doctor had cut and stapled my right ureter tube. I experienced lots of pain, I was urinating through my vagina uncontrollable to the point that I had to wear diapers. I went to the E.R because of a fever 102.7 and throwing up, I had an infection due to the urine in my body cavity. I was then sent to have a neuphrostomy tube inserted in my right kidney, this was the most painful thing I have ever experienced!!!!! I am now waiting on a surgery to try to repair the ureter tube, I just want all this over!!! Did anyone try to get compensation? I've been told to try and sue the doctor for medical malpractice. Has anyone been successful at suing their Doctor?
Omg i cannot blieve there r sooo many ppl who have lived this horror movie right alongside me it seems!!....same lap hyst procedure...little 1s 3 and 1 and more problems than i care 2 elaborate on...omgudness where is the justice in these "medical errors" and y do we have 2 suffer until some1 decides this is ludacris...this many ppl should not be goin thru this...my dr told me 2 in about 300 ppl go thru this...r we the 2 in EVERY SINGLE 300 ppl
I had a laproscopic hysterectomy on Aug 27th 2010, and the DR cut my left ureter, it went undiagnosed for 9 days, The DR repaired the cut ureter with a stent? I have to have the stents removed in Jan 2 months have passed and im still having pain when urinating and have back pain. I don't know what to do at this point no one hears my cry for help!
I had a Supracervical laporoscopic hysterectomy Oct 5. I went one & 1/2 wks before I became ill with a ureterovaginal fistula with urine gushing out of my cervical stump! It was God awful and unbelievable.
The Urologist successfully placed a stent into my right kidney & advised me to conservatively wait it out for 12wks to see if the ureter will heal. It was disclosed to me that my ureter was cauterized during the procedure.
Every study I have found pertaining to this condition seems to end in reanastomosis of the ureter. I have not been able to read anywhere where a ureter has actually healed as a result of the stenting.
I know that the Doctors stick together and protect one another, while also attempting to stay "far removed" from a medical legal issue.
It has put me out of work for 12wks, and I run the risk of losing my job entirely if I cannot be back in January, the first week.
It's comforting to know that I am not alone, although disturbing at the same time.
Did any of you ask your Gyne if he bothered to utilize dye into your ureters at the end of your procedures to assess the ureter's integrity?
it's not a required procedure, but it is a standard of care that indicates your surgeon is more thorough and cautious.. Something MY Gyne did not do or display.
I would love to hear feed back. I appreciate knowing again, that there are others. Sorry for what you are going through.

well it's been over 2 years since i had my pelvic surgery for rectal cancer an i still have a nephrostomy tube coming out of my left kidney
it has to be changed out every 3 months.[surgeon cut the left ureter during surgery] i have been to several urology specialists an it seems the only thing that can be done for me is a tuu, where they take the left ureter cut it back to where there may be no damage and hope there is enough to swing it across an connect it to the right ureter. they say i have to much scar tissue and adhesions to try an go near the bladder. so many ifs and buts with this surgery i will not have it done, because i will still suffer infections regardless. i hurt all the time an once [my first urologist]placed the tube wrong during a change out that i nearly bled to death and became septic/ i know we go and have surgery because we need it,thats why we sign all those papers, but like the guy said''we didn't sign up for this''. my quality of life is almost at ground zero, my only enjoyment is watching my grandchildren grow, they are young and don't understand, all they know is grandpa is sick ,so they don't have much to say or do with me,it's not their fault, but just getting to see them warms my heart so i try to keep hanging on. my prayers go out to anyone who has suffered such errors during surgery, because it can change your life forever :-(

I just thought I would post that yes there is light at the end. I am 1 year out from bilateral uretal reimplantation surgery. Life does go on. I never thought I was going to get better. I certainly do not feel like I did even before the hysterectomy as it still feels strange when I urinate and little bladder and flank pains at times. Overall its good. This has changed my life and my familys. I don't want to make it sound so dramatic, but it is. I am still angry at the gyn doctor who caused all this. Had she only taken a few precautions this would not have occured. The unfortunate part in most all of these surgeries is they are not held accountable for their screw ups, at least in Minnesota. Had this occured in a few other states my medical bills would have been covered, unfortunately my insurance had to pay their portion and I was left with the rest. Total medical bills thus far over 200,000. I can't imagine if I had not been insured.
I just needed to vent a little...I hope that any gals that that are considering a gyn surgical procedure consult with your doctor and make sure they take every precaution available to protect you.

I had an adominal hysterectomy 9/23/10, the next day in the hospital I didn't have enough urine output going through my catheter the doctor ordered medicine for my IV to help push the urine flow, so I had to keep the catheter in an extra day. I also complained about really bad pain on my right side and lower back the gave me therma pads for that. The next day one of the doctors came in and I told her I stlll had the pain, she said they would do a CT to check my kidney because I was still showing something in my blood test. Then next day my doctor came in and asked if the pain was still there... it wasn't, so I said well maybe it was just gas and that's how it ended, the next day I was sent home with plenty of pain medication. I was to see him in 4 weeks before that time I experienced some pain from time to time not sure of what it was. The day of my 4 week check up I advised the doctor that I was still having some pain and he asked if I wanted to have it checked or not. I said yes ,and he had me schedule a sonogram and thats when I found out I had a right uretal injury and kidney dilation. The next couple of days I had to go have a nephrostomy tube inserted. I still have it, just waiting for the urologist to tell me when the stent will be tried. This all so overwelming I'm mad, I'm sad...I want to look into malpractice but, too exausted to do that. Constently paying medical bills an co-pays for something that I had no control over, and I have been off work for the entire time and afraid that I may lose my job. I don't understand none of it, I try to stay positive by thinking that there are people with worse problems than my own, but it's just so hard everyday is a different day for me...so, I just try and take it one day at a time. My prayers are with all.
I can't help but wonder how many people have been injured in this way who DON'T use the websites. I had a prophylactic laprascopic hysterectomy in Dec and my symptoms (severe stomach pain) didn't present until 4 weeks later. The gyn "blistered" my right ureter. It took a week to diagnose the problem. I am one week into a 3 month stint with a stent. There is no doubt in my mind that his "mistake" arose from a workday that was WAY too long. He had at least two long complicated surgeries before mine that day and they didn't roll me into the OR until 5:45pm. The feeling of rush was palpable. Shouldn't there be a moral, if not legal restriction on how many hours a day a surgeon can perform? I mean pilots and truck drivers have restrictions. I will be sure to ask the next time I consider any surgery. Anyone else feel the same?
I had a hystercotomy in Dec 2010 and something went wrong in my surgery and I had to have a stent put in from the kidneys to the end of my urethra. I would rather have a baby and a toothache at the same time. I can not sit flat on my bottom, can not walk for long periods of time, I can't go back to work because of the medication I am on and to make matters worst I am constantly in pain. When I ask my doctors what happenI get the stupiest looks and was told that they made a mistake a put stitches in my urethra. Im trying to see if there is legal actions that I can take.
