Same thing happened to me in 2008. Since then, I have kidney stones, interstitial cystitis of the bladder, I keep uti's, bladder/kidney infections, I retain water so now my legs/feet swell. I still have pain when I use the restroom. I had my ureter reattatched at UAB also in 2008. I have to have it redone again. I was told my ureter acts as a suction now rather than a funnel. If my bladder gets the least bit full, it pulls urine back into my kidney. You will get used to pain. It starts out horrible but it's something I was told I'd have to get used to. Because of my man made ureter it would always pull the urine back up... Good luck!

I'm in Minnesota and had a lap hysterectomy done to remove a large cyst in my ovary, the ovary and uterus. Was sent home same day in lots of pain and couldn't urinate so was taught to self-cath. Ended up in ER after a day home due to horrible pain and vomitting. That's when the "leaking" started... once they got me hydrated. Was in the hospital for 4 days for pain and sent home thinking I was incontinent and told it would stop. Back in ER due to major blood clots through vagina... Had blood transfusion. During hospital stay and more tests discovered hole in right ureter. Sent home with neph tube from right kidney... 2 stent attempts failed so now I'm scheduled for re-attachment surgery end of February (original surgery was November). Definitely planning on contacting an attorney, just concerned because it's such a reputable hospital. I'm 42 and was healthy before all of this, except the cyst, obviously. Ive been in adult diapers since surgery and have had a neph tube since early December and it's not right! I understand there are always complications with surgery but no one discussed any of them with me... I was supposed to be back at work in six weeks. Now if I'm lucky I'll go back six weeks after the re-attachment and it'll have been 5 months. And I'm skeptical things will go well.

The same with me. I waited 3 weeks because people said I was healing.

Same thing happened to me 3 weeks ago, I'm just very thankful that it was caught the day of surgery and not later as all of these individuals have experienced. I agree with you that this is a very painful and uncomfortable situation. I sure hope you're feeling much better by now.

Had ovaries out laproscopically. Nauseous, high blood pressure, weak for 3 months. Ended up having 2 other surgeries and a kidney had to be removed. I was so sick that I lost 30 pounds in that 3 months. I'm so frustrated because my obgyn seemed to dismiss my symptoms and referred me to a gastro dr. It took my PCP to finally figure it out. Now, I am out a kidney for the rest of my life and I'm only 40. :(

My right ureter was completely cauterized shut during my hysterectomy. I had my ureter reconnected to my bladder and a stent put in ureter. On the day to remove my stent, they couldn't find it. It obstructed out of my kidney, which they told me they have never heard of that happening. I've been through soooo much pain, and after my last procedure I was told I could go back to work the next day! I walk over 6 miles a day so it did not work out. I'm on my 3rd week of work and it really sucks. I totally can relate to you. You are not alone.❤️

This happened to me as well, I thought I was alone also. One simple hysterectomy has put me down for 6 months so far. 2 stints later and a balloon that failed, I'm having surgery Monday to relocate my ureter. Which I will have a urine bag and another stint until ureter tube heals around my bladder. What can be done because losing that much work and all the pain, the money I already put out, and I know I will have problems threw out my life, what can be done?

That's what I'm trying to figure out too. I contacted a lawyer and I am waiting to hear back while they review my medical records. I also have nerve damage in my leg which keeps me from doing a lot of the things I did before and causes me a lot of pain.

I recently had the exact same situation happen to me. My procedure was in Feb 2015, and I currently just had reconstructive surgery on my ureter tube in April 2016. Can I ask how your situation is going and how you've been handling it? I would love to compare our stories. If you would like to email me that would be easier. My email is

Hello Erin, I hope all is well for you. I wanted to let you know that I had no luck with a malpractice suit. NO one wants to take it on..:-( With meditation and self care I have moved on. Still bitter at times though.

My ureter was basically sucked out. I was sick for 3 months. Long story short, I had to have my kidney taken out. I tried to file malpractice but was turned down, twice. I just don't understand. Pathology missed it. My doctor missed it. I have a permanent life changing loss. And nothing.

My doctor severed my ureter through laporascopic surgery 5 months ago. He did not tell me. By 2 weeks my body cavity was full of urine. I had 1 nephrostomy tube in my stomach, and 2 in my back. To this day I have 1 tube left in my kidney. No luck getting stents placed, however, through talks of reconstruction it looks like I will lose the kidney after all. Went septic about a month ago. This process can be long lasting so prepare to be strong.
