I am a male who has been suffering with this condition for months. The docs are about useless to me, other than giving me Rx for antibiotics. They seem to be scared to order testing! What has happened to this country when the MDs are scared of the INS. co. I will be going out of network to find a provider who will actually order tests on me. I have had 1 urine culture and 2 DRE s but that is about it besides normal testing. None of them want to do any special testing and when I asked for a culture one of them looked at me like I was nuts. I am really frustrated. I am tired of taking pills that seem to help only temporarily. I dont mine taking the pill if they could actually culture something that they can tell me yes this pill is effective against.
I am really beyond frustrated with all of this...

I have also been having extreme urethral pain, with no infection. Doctors don't have a clue. So far I've found applying tea tree oil topically and drinking plenty of water to be my only relief.
I want to thank you for mentioning, Tea Tree Oil. I have applied it to my urethral area, and it worked. Pain and spasms subsided. I have been symptom free for two years, but it's returned. I had forgetten the name, and thank goodness, I found your site again, and the name of the oil. This oil does the trick!!!! I'm going to the store and buy more. This is great stuff. I too, have no infections, and this is a God Send!!!!!! Thank you, thank you, once again.
Hi, could you possibly share the name of the sites about the tea tree oil/how to use it (eg do you have to dilute it?) as I can't see any sites names on this board, as they aren't allowed. Thank you, Ina
I've had urethritis since my 3rd child was born. It never goes away. Sulfa did not help this, and besides I was allergic to it. I went to the hospital several times and they dilated me, but said I had no infection. Finally one of the doctors said I certainly did have an infection, and he prescribed Urised, which is not an anti-biotic. After months and months, I felt better on Urised within a couple days. It turned my urine blue. There were no other side effects. It was inexpensive. I used this drug for many years when necessary and it always worked. I saw my urologist a few times a year. He catheterized me each time, and never found another infection. I continued on the Urised, until it was taken off the market in 1997. Then I was lost. Nothing for the pain and frequency. My new doctor, prescribed an ESTRING, which is inserted and you wear it for 3 mos. You can't feel it. It helped a lot. My new doctor was a urogynecologist. Before I got the ESTRING he gave me a prescription, called Urelle, when Urised went off the market, but it was very, very expensive and I couldn't afford it. Canada was even more expensive, and I found the only company who made Urised stopped making it. (Urised was very cheap.) There were a few substitues, but I'm not sure what will help. After going to him for several years he recently moved out of state, and I'm looking for a new doctor. So far haven't found one. When he left, the practice, I didn't know what to do. There were several referrals, but the Uro G had no openings for several months. I'm still looking. Urised turned my urine blue, but I didn't care at all about that. I'm going to try one of the meds I've read about on the net which were not very expensive. I found a nearby pharmacy that carries it, and I hope it works. It's called Cystex. It's for frequency and burning.
Anyone seem to think that the burning is due to some food sensitivity? After I eat certain foods I burn in about 10 min's! Ouch! Aleve also does this. Just tonight I ate a pinch of frosting off a cupcake from a birthday party…less than 60 seconds I had my worst pain ever! That nasty burn or what I call a bad pinch feel. My husband is suspecting Blue dye. I have also think corn starch. Not necessarily corn, yet maybe a fermented version of it. Don’t know yet…but still in the investigating stage. Cystex liquid does kind of work for me, yet it takes 2 hours before I feel relief.
I am male and have the same problems as all on this blog, and have had it for over 20 years. I am just wondering where you apply the tea tree oil to relieve the urethra pain?
I'm 73, have been suffering from this problem for a year after complicated surgery, cannot walk now am in a wheelchair, catheter was in too long UTI after UTI, ab's for a superbug ab's for UTI ,Thrush after thrush, canesten, pessarys, cista purine the one off pill all 5 times have been on ab last week, no difference am so sore all the time. I don't intend to spend a fortune going privately and public has waiting list of 6 months, and the threads seem to say it was a waste of time going the hospital route & for me it will be an ordeal anyway. So my question for Losing Hope.. I am just wondering how you got on with Toviaz all of 3 years ago, did it help or how are you, improved I hope. My GP came today cannot find any visible problem and has started me on Toviaz.I am shocked to see 14 pages of threads and that it is such a common international problem. It is somehow strangely some sort of comfort to know you're not the only sufferer. Hope you can reply to me,I have never done anything like this before!! I am in Ireland Best Wishes to You
I would recommend Angela Kilmartin's book that describes the bottle washing method - since I started doing it every day, my symptoms have subsided considerably and in combination with other things (like d-mannose and oregano oil) I feel considerably better already, just after 2 weeks of doing all the above daily.
As for tea tree oil, I 've been doing some research, and it's used to cure internal inflammation caused by bacterial vaginitis and yeast.. so if you are having related symptoms (for a woman) you might want to try a tea tree oil suppository inserted overnight for up to 6 weeks daily. But some results can be seen after a week. It take longer than antibiotics, but it's been proven to kill all bacteria in clinical trials in 98% of women. Tea tree oil shouldn't be ingested as it's toxic if used that way.
Hi Losing Hope but I hope by now that isn't still the case!. I read your post from 3 years ago saying you had just been put on Toviaz and I would like to know did it work for you? This week my GP has also given me this to try. After reading all the posts , 14 pages of them, it was just like reading about myself.
I am 73 had complicated major surgery this time last year, had a catheter in for a month UTI after UTI thrush after thrush, cyctitis and have been on strong antibiotics for 2 years for MRSA ( which I have got rid of now) Tried Cysta Purine Canesten, pessaries, one off pills 5 times over but cannot get rid of this pain.I thought having stopped the antibiotics I would go back to normal After reading the posts I don't want to go down the medical route, have had enough of hospitals, so I said I will try Toviaz for a month then try the natural/herbal remedies the marshmallow, slippery elm D.Mannose etc. I am in a wheelchair all the time now and I don,t think that helps. I would appreciate any help you could give me and I do hope you are well now.
With my Best Wishes,....Regi
Dear all,
Your stories are so touching :( I had a bad UTI years ago and it kept coming back. When there was no more infection the pain was still there, not during but a few minutes AFTER urination and lasting for half an hour or more. I had this for a year. I was miserable.
After 6 years with no UTI (my last urologist gave me a strong antibiotic and then 3 months of UROVAXOM which is a vaccine for escherichia coli) I had another UTI a month ago. It has apparently gone away.... when I had it, the pain was DURING urination and now the pain is AFTER... and it is horrible because it doesnt go awaaaay!!! Today I tried drinking TONS of water and it only made matters worse! I had to pee... and then half an hour of pain... and then when the pain was subsiding... I had to pee again!... I have been in pain ALL DAY!
I have learned so much from your posts, I have spent hours reading them. First, let me tell you how lucky you are to be in the states where you can purchase everything so easily. Im on the other side of the world, so Im purchasing everything through amazon as I could not find anything here in my home country :(
Here is my plan:
1. Get an appointment with a female urologist that actually EXAMINES you (I have to wait 26 days for my appointment...)
2. Buy and apply tea tree oil. COuldnt get it in the drugstore or nature store, is this a chinese product? Shall I try a chinese store? Can anyone please specify how do I apply this oil?
3. Will try Buscopan.. that is an easy one. I think I have it, it is for tummy ache, but apparently works for all kinds of spasms...
4. Buy marshmallow root ... I will get the pills. How many a day?
5. Get the D-Manosse with cranactin. This is not for the pain but to prevent from future infections, right?
6. Get these probiotics:Fem-dophilus contains two patented and clinically proven probiotic strains, Lactobacillus GR-1 and Lactobacillus RC-14 discovered and developed by Dr. Gregor Reid and Dr. Andrew Bruce at Urex Biotech. Over 20 years of research supports the oral use of GR-1 and RC-14 to colonize and protect the vaginal tract. Support the health of the urinary tract
7. Keep reading on spastic pelvic floor and pudendal neuralgia.
8. Xanax? I have Clonazepam, so I will try that today!
All of this I learned from you! Thanks a lot, I hope it works out, will let you know!
Hi Killita, I found this response on another thread on this forum - this should help you with using tea tree oil. You can get tea tree oil in Holland and Barrett if you are in the UK or in Boots. Boots will also sell you an empty dropper bottle if you ask them. It does string but if you dilute it to the proportion described it should do the trick. I am happy with the results so far. I use coconut oil as a carrier oil. I also put a couple drops of clove oil in the mix as well. My recipe is something like this: 10 parts coconut oil 3 parts tea tree oil .5 parts clove oil Mix in a dark brown dropper bottle that is glass for propper storage. When I apply the oil to my urethera when I am having pain the pain can go from a 8 on the pain scale down to a 0. I cried the first time I experienced it. I was so relieved and greatful to have found something to take the pain away. I carry it with me at all times now. I leave the pipe at home, finally! I know some people think it is harmful to use teatree oil but to me it seems a much safer option to valium, pain killers, lidocane creams and any other drug or antibiotic a doctor may prescribe. DONT USE STRAIGHT TEA TREE OIL!! That would definetly hurt. Coconut oil is a natural anti inflamitory and should help with the urethera pain too. If anyone tries this and has success as well please post about it. I got my life back and hope that it helps you too!
I used to have this problem as a teenager. I had my urethral expanded never had another pain for 12 years until now. But hey 12 years it was well worth the little day surgery. If you have what they say is a narrow urethral do not allow them to do it just in the office. Find a doctor that will put you to sleep. The pain while awake would be the worst ever for you. I had one doctor try and do it in his office I immediately started hurting and had bladder pain symtoms. Good luck!
Hey everyone. I SUFFERED for 6 months with terrible bladder spasms and urethral symptoms typical of a UTI. At first it was a UTI and a bad infection which was treated with the incorrect antibiotics. Eventually they got rid of it , but my symptoms persisted. I had a cystoscopte, cat scan, multiple tests, all very painful and embarressing. I eventually diagnosed myself and had it confirmed by a very well known urologist. Interstitial cystitis. This can develop from bladder trauma, even just from trauma from a bad UTI. So, the interstitial cystitis is basically an auto immune disorder (in my case, there are many forms and symptoms) where my body THOUGHT i had an infection and therefore sent immune cells to attack in my bladder and urethra. This caused inflammation = the pain felt during a UTI. So, i treated myself with anti-inflammatories as soon as i felt pain, and strted drinking Cysta-Q (bought on Amazon). It's a herbal supplement for bladder health. It slowly got better and worked! Apparently these conditions can be reacurring, but hang in there. The worst thing i've learnt is applying lots of lotions down there. I'm allergic to those apparently so oral treatments tend to be better. And do an STD screening, even if ur really sure you don't have one, if you've had a sexual partner do a full screening.
