I am a 33 year old mother of 3.  I just had a hysterectomy and salpingo-oopherectomy 7 weeks ago and I feel awesome! I was very concerned with weight gain and everything you find online is absolutely scary but I have lost 17 lbs, 4 inches off my waist and 2 inches off my hips in the last 7 weeks.  My moods have leveled out and I have so much energy! I think the increased energy level and the level moods combined with walking every day has made all the difference in the world.  I am so glad I had the surgery and I would advise anyone who needs the surgery to not wait.  The benefits are definitely worth it!

Thank you for your words. You make me feel better about my upcoming surgery. I keep hearing how much better I will feel. Or that this is the best thing that could happen. Of course my daughter is jealous!

Thank you ALL, for all the positive and candid feedback. I am scheduling to have a hysterectomy in June and yes, I was very nervous until I read this forum. I have fibroid s that has cause me to gain weight, I am tired all the time, pain in my pelvic area, and I am not happy looking five months prego all the time. I am very active, and its frustrates me when I do not have the energy to exercise.  God is good, he direct me to this site. I was reading nothing but negative drama until now.

hi, its great reading everybodys replys and experiences. Im 36 and had a hysterectomy (ovaries still in) last year in september. I was so nervous and scared that my life was going to be over. I was told i was having a vaginal hysterectomy but on the day they did a abdominal because my ovaries were embedded into my bowel... that explained the pain i was getting but got told it was nothing. Any how i was off work for 6weeks and since i had my op I am so glad i did it my life is so much better I have a fab sex life now not having to worry about heavy bleeding and pain. I also have lost 9 kg. I recommend to others that follow your gut instinct,,, i had so many problems over the years such as ovarian cysts the size of a rugby ball where i could of died or lost my daughter at the time when i was pregnant with the cyst... heavy bleeding terrible skin, weight gain .. terrible mood swings where my doctor convinced me i had depression and needed meds even thoe i said it was hormonal... which it was in the end... and other annoying problems.. but i didnt give up and demanded scans and answers WHY?... so dont give up and keep pushing if you feel something is not right...

I think you will be very happy with your results. Just be careful on the comeback trail, and don't overdo it too soon. It has now been nearly 3 months, and I have not a single second-thought or regret, other than wishing I'd had it done years prior.

I am 45 and scheduled for a full hysterectomy due to a colon issue. The hysterectomy is merely a sidenote. But I am so nervous that I'll gain a ton of weight, have mood swings or have no energy. Because I am going in for other issues they will operating from a laceration below my belly button. How long till I can start running long distances?

Honestly, check with your doctor. Mine has repeatedly told me that it is going to take a full 6 months before everything realigns itself (it will feel VERY strange taking bowel movements and urinating for months) to the 'New Normal' as your remaining insides occupy slightly new positions. I began doing fairly heavy physical labor on my farm the same month, but always carefully, as you can pop the stitches inside if you push too hard, too fast....and THAT will set you back a very long time, indeed. I wouldn't start with anything more than walking for a few months. Your body will let you know if you are pushing it, so listen. As long as your hyst is done laparoscopically or vaginally, you will have a much quicker recovery. Eat LOTS of veggies and fruit post surgery, and drink lots of water. Increase your fiber intake. Be active, but don't play it wrong. From my own experience and talking to other women, a positive attitude will do you best of all. A hysterectomy isn't The End - for me and many others, it has been a new beginning. DO make sure you order a transcript of your surgery from the hospital, for everything from the time you checked in to your discharge. You will make a lot of discoveries, and much of it will be things your doctor won't mention during follow up visits. Do join HysterSisters, and read. Post in their forums. That is a massive online community of women just like yourself, and they have answers for every question you will think of, and provide answers for the tons and tons of questions you never knew you should ask. Good luck!

I'm so glad to read positive things post hysterectomy as I am going in on the 25th June. I'm 42 and have had terrible problems most of my adult life with periods. Has anyone found it hard to lose or maintain weight loss before a hysterectomy?

I had my hysterectomy on May 21...so I'm not even 3 weeks through yet!  I must say the hystersisters forum really did scare me as well.  I am having some lower belly swelling and according to what I read on their site, this could last 6 months to a year.  Anyone have anything to report on that??  Just some FYI...I was scheduled for laparoscopic surgery, they attempted to do it laparoscopically, but ended up having to go in through an old c-section incision.
As far as appetite...I don't really have a real appetite.  I look at food and really just don't want it!  Which is a great thing, considering I'm a big girl!  Any advice??

I'm sorry they were not able to do it as planned. The swelling is normal; don't worry - it will slowly decrease. Be patient! As far as weight goes, if you want to, you can turn this into a major change for yourself. I was ravenous when I woke up after surgery, but within a number of hours that desire went away and I really wasn't interested in food (partly because the food they offered me was simply terrible in both look and flavor). I just wanted water after that - lots and lots of water. Your stomach will 'shrink' a bit from less consumption, so that can be handy in retraining yourself to eat less overall. It took quite a while before I was interested in meat or carbs of any type - I just wanted veggies and fruit for the most part. Try not to let hystersisters scare you; yes, a lot of the posts deal with issues, but there's a great deal of very good advice in there on making oneself more comfortable while healing, and it is a great place to post if you are needing to speak to those who know EXACTLY what you are going through. Are you taking walks around your area yet? That's not only good for recovery, it will accelerate weight loss AND make you feel better, faster.
