Premature ejaculation is the most common sexual dysfunction in men. It represents the inability to delay ejaculation long enough to have a satisfactory sexual experience.

This definition of the premature ejaculation where it is not mentioned exactly how long is long enough, is the best one according to many experts.
This is definitely a problem for both sexual partners and it should be treated as such.

If the male in a couple reaches climax in for example 10 minutes and his partner regularly climaxes in 5 minutes, this is not considered a premature ejaculation problem. However, if a man delays his ejaculation for as long as 25 minutes but his partner needs 40 minutes of stimulation before reaching an orgasm, they have a problem.

It is clear that in such cases both partners aren’t satisfied and can become unhappy and frustrated.

However, some scientists define premature ejaculation as a medical problem when man ejaculates within two minutes of penetration.

Men shouldn’t be embarrassed if they have this kind of problem since it is the most common sexual dysfunction in men.

No one really knows how many men are suffering from this unpleasant condition because most men don’t like to talk about it particularly not to their physicians. According to some unofficial sources one in five men experiences difficulty with uncontrolled or early ejaculation at some point in life and more then thirty percent of men suffer from premature ejaculation constantly.

No one really knows what is causing this problem but since it is evidenced among men from the beginning of sexual education and researches, many experts have tried to tell exactly what the predominant cause is! Therefore, there are many theories and many possible explanations!

Premature ejaculation types

There are two types of premature ejaculation - primary and secondary. Primary premature ejaculation means that the individual recognized the problem as early as he entered sexual maturity. Secondary premature ejaculation is a condition which began later in life when an individual already had normal sex life and acceptable level of ejaculatory control.

Causes of premature ejaculation

For several years, scientists tried to figure out if there is any organic disorder behind this unpleasant condition with no success. Premature ejaculation is considered a psychological problem in most of the cases. In case of individuals who have never had sexual intercourse before, excitement or anxiety may be present and this could definitely lead to a premature ejaculation.

Most of the young men that are about to have a first sexual experience have deep anxiety about sex because they planned it for a long time before it happened. Traumatic experiences from the past can also affect man’s ability to have a normal sexual experience. This could be caused by family incest, sexual assault, conflict with one or both parents and several other causes from the past!

Over the time, most men will learn to control their orgasm. When it comes to secondary premature ejaculation, things look a bit different. In most cases, psychological problems such as stress, depression and other factors that can affect mental and emotional health are responsible for the ejaculation problems!
The most common problems of middle aged men are financial, related to work or sometimes even avoiding unwanted pregnancy might be

Beside these psychologically caused premature ejaculations, there are several medical conditions that really can affect person’s ability co control his ejaculation.

Some of these disorders are

  • multiple sclerosis,
  • extreme sensitivity of the penis,
  • injury to the nerves, and
  • other neurological problems

Therapeutic approaches to premature ejaculation

There are many therapeutic approaches and some of them can really help a man!

Sexual behavioral therapy

The first step in treatment of premature ejaculation should be relieving any underlying performance pressure or anxiety in the male. In the last couple of years, sexual behavioral therapy has been improved and sexologist recommend several “exercises” to improve man’s ability to control his ejaculation!
One of the most common methods is definitely masturbation. If a person masturbates about two and a half hours before the sexual intercourse, it will help him to have a stronger and longer-lasting erection.

“The stop-and-start technique”

There is also an interesting technique called “The stop-and-start technique”.It is based on the practice of taking a break just before reaching the orgasm. It is also one of the most effective methods.

“The Squeeze method”

Everyone has heard about the famous “Squeeze method”! It is very similar to already described “The stop-and-start method” with one difference: When a person feels that he is about to have an orgasm he should try squeezing the tip of his penis with a thumb and index finger for several seconds. Then, he should continue with sexual intercourse.

Sex positions

Most of the experts suggest practicing “the lower sex position” as much as couples can so man can relax more and reduce sensitivity in his penis a bit!

Kegel exercises

Most of the men have never heard about the Kegel exercises. They consist of Flexing the pelvic muscle, which could be exercised while urinating. The flow of urine should be stopped and then released couple of times a day. Several scientists claim that this also plays an extremely important role in achieving ejaculatory control.

According to scientific researches made in the past, practicing any of these methods for at least couple of weeks will help about 95 percent of men feel more in control of their ejaculation timing.

Desensitizing creams

Beside these behavioral ways to reduce the sensitivity of your penis, there are also some, more artificial, but equally effective ways to do this. Desensitizing creams, topical anesthetic creams containing Lidocaine and Prilocaine that are made to lessen the sensations felt by men during intercourse and numb a penis a bit or even a simple use of condoms will definitely reduce the amount of stimulation and help you “last longer”!

Medications therapy

This condition can also be treated with certain medications. The optimal medical treatment for premature ejaculation has not been established yet but certain antidepressants such as Zoloft, Paxil, Prozac and several others could help treating premature ejaculation problem. Although these drugs aren't approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of premature ejaculation, it is proven that they are highly effective. Most of the men probably think about the nasty side effects that could occur from using these antidepressants but the good thing is that one does not need to take these medications on a daily basis to prevent premature ejaculation. They should be used only in the beginning of practicing sexual intercourse and never again!

Psychotherapy

If nothing else helps, a person should definitely start thinking about psychotherapy. It is based on so-called counseling or talk therapy. It involves talking about your relationships and experiences with a mental health professional. Some doctors recommend avoiding intercourse entirely for a short time while you are on therapy.

Not only that it is highly effective, but it can also help you overcome several other problems in you life, beside the sexual ones.

Is prevention of premature ejaculation possible?

Before choosing any of these therapy methods, a person should also think about prevention because it is possible and very effective. If you start with some changes immediately, you can enjoy sex life for good! The major thing a man should remember is maintaining a healthy and relaxed attitude toward sex. If a man suffers from some form of anxiety, guilt or frustration about his sex life, he should consider seeking psychotherapy or sexual therapy because it is always the best way.

Speaking openly with your partner about sex and problems with it if there are any is always a helpful and smart thing to do.
Many people think that alcohol or some drugs could help them slow their response! This is nonsense and it could lead to several much more serious problems because drugs and alcohol will also keep a man from developing the body awareness and make this problem permanent. Everyone should keep in mind that no one is perfect.Almost every couple has sex problems and the only thing that could be abnormal about it is a man’s attitude toward it. Many sexologists claim that master sex organ in a man’s body is definitely his brain, not his penis.
