allergic to most antibiotics

Hi, I am allergic to most antibiotics, so when I get an infection it’s almost impossible to get a medicine for me. Even when I get a safe antibiotic, I always take it with fear of having allergy or side effects. Is there any other option for me, except antibiotics?

Based on your description, you may have mast cell activation disorder/syndrome.. do some reading and take some articles to your doctor. It's rare so most docs aren't familiar, but it is starting to be more common, possibly due to our toxic environments. I was like you until I was finally diagnosed with MCAS (took me 30 years!) and now treatment has me relatively functional again although I still avoid most medication except for the Zantac and Atarax used to treat my MCAS. Try some natural/alternative antibiotic substances like inhaling essential oils in boiling water too, as those don't usually cause reactions.
I'm so disheartened. I had a terrible skin infection last winter. The hospitalist treated me with vanco and ancef, then ended vanco because I responded fast and moved me to IV omnicef. Because I did ok for two days on both, she refused to believe me about my cephalosporin allergies and sent me home on oral omnicef. By day four, my throats started to get that tight familiar feeling and felt it was closing. I ran to the ER. ER DR administered Benadryl and the feeling in my throat left after a few minutes. The hospitalist who cared for me happened to be in the ER and came to talk to me and told me I must continue the Omnicef and that what I was experiencing wasn't an allergic reaction, but a sensation in my throat "due to reflux from antibiotics". I was baffled. So I went home and continued the omnicef the next morning and my throats felt as if it were going to swell shut, I called the pharmacist whom I know well and he was very very concerned and said to stop the drug and go see my gp. I can't get anyone to take me seriously. I'm worried I'm going to end up dead someday from a drug given to me by doctors who think I'm insane. I've seen three gp 's and and two allergists. The don't know what to do with me. I pray all the time I will not get sick and need antibiotics. This is terrifying to live with and for those doctors who refuse to believe need to start realizing that this is very real!
Hello, I am not allergic to antibiotics but get sick to my stomach if I take them so I avoid them if I possibly can. One of the best things I know of to avoid illness is to use NAC (N-acetyl-L-Cysteine) everyday (500mg). It is an amino acid that boosts the immune system and clears out extra mucous from the body. It also helps protect the liver from medications like tylenol. My family does not get the flu or other illnesses as long as they take it everyday. There is a lot of information about it on-line. It is readily used in emergency rooms at high doses for acetaminophen (tylenol) overdoses. It is easy to overdose on acetaminophen since it is contained in several different medications (like cold medication) and people don't pay attention to how much they are taking in total. Anyway, you can purchase NAC at health food stores at a reasonable cost and it will save you many trips to the doc. My family has used it for many, many years.
My seven year old experienced serum sickness for months after an antibiotic. She has been allergic every antibiotic given to her. Even eye drops. It terrifies me. I am hoping for a cure

I know there's a place in Massachusetts General Hospital that can test you to see exactly what antibiotics you're allergic to. I would imagine there would be one in every major hospital. To find out if there is one in your area, go to an Allergist. It's a doctor who specializes in allergies & can test for food & environmental allergies, but they can also refer you to the doctor that specifically tests for antibiotic allergies. They can also suggust certain antibiotics that you're not allergic to & most likely know of some antibiotics that you haven't tried yet. That's how I found out that such a place even exists. Also, having those results on hand will prove to all other doctors that you ARE allergic to antibiotics & that it's not all in your head!
I would be interested in what you have learned from Mayo Clinic in AZ. I can't take any antibiotics. It seems that each time they have prescribed a new one I have a reaction and each one gets worse.
I am also allergic to a several antibiotics including eye drops and this has caused quite a bit of anxiety and stress in my life. The doctors don't really have a clear answer so I have spent countless hours searching the internet for some clues. Here is a summary of my finding. Possible risk factors for becoming allergic to multiple antibiotics 1) Obesity: Being overweight seems to be a risk factor since this study below which analyzed the health data of 2.3 Million people notes that people with multiple drug allergies had an average BMI of 29.3 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22289726 2) Vitamin D deficiency: This also seems to be a risk factor according to this publication below https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19440116 This publication talks about drug hypersensitivity in general but I found the connection reasonable since Vitamin D deficiency is also suspected in causing other allergies like peanut allergy. The theory is that Vitamin D is needed for the overall health of the immune system and its deficiency could possibly cause the immune system to incorrectly react to drugs. I am pretty sure that I didn't have any drug allergies during my younger days when I was not overweight and spent a lot of time outdoors under the sun. I am not sure if it will help me with the drug allergies but I have already started to lose weight and hope to get checked for Vitamin D deficiency soon. Maybe I will grow out of some of the drug allergies that I have. I am hopeful since I read that as much as 90% of people outgrow penicillin allergies over a span of 10 years. https://www.aaaai.org/conditions-and-treatments/library/allergy-library/penicillin-allergy Action plan/hope for the future 1) I have been given antibiotics for suspected infection so many times but in the future I hope to take antibiotics only after a confirmed infection. Maybe this will always not be possible but I am going to try my best. 2) I will also be checking if it would be possible to take low dosage and shorter course of antibiotics since I have been able to tolerate this in some cases. There are some studies that show that is equally efficient in some cases. 3) Just because we are allergic to 5 or 6 antibiotics, doesn't mean that we are allergic to every single antibiotic out there. We will surely be able to use something else when we need it. 4) Even in cases where we need the antibiotics that we have reacted to in the past, it is possible to desensitize our bodies to temporarily take the medicine without causing allergies. This process needs to be done in a hospital so I assume that it would be done as a last resort. http://www.brighamandwomens.org/Departments_and_Services/medicine/services/rheumatology/Services/Desensitizationforpatients.aspx 5) There is some exciting research happening to use phages which are viruses to kill bacteria instead of antibiotics. This research is mainly done for combating superbugs but if this becomes mainstream then we also also possibly benefit from it http://time.com/5068513/superbugs-are-nearly-impossible-to-fight/ Please note that I am not a doctor and this is just a summary of all the information that I found on the internet. I just shared it here with the hope that it helps someone else with their anxiety. No matter what, don't lose hope, I am sure that God has a plan for our lives and having these allergies does not change that.
you need to take the Levaquin! Cipro is same family of drugs, that would be good too. My brother has been a pharmacist for 30 years and he knows that the new FDA warnings have got out of hand. Reactions have happened, but 9 times out of 10 if you feel a side effect coming on and quit taking it, there is no permanent damage. I am allergic to everything and its one of few I am left to take. I am in my 40's and taken Cipor with no side effects at all.
You can take d-mannose for infections. I have interstitial cystitis and it works. You can also take a liquid that has cranberry concentrate d+mannose and a flower of some kind and it works really well. I was given a infection after bladder surgery and it cleared it.
Look up Structured Silver on computer.
I am going thru that right now. I have an ear infection. Am allergic to Neomycin, cipro, and ofloxcin. As I type this I have resorted to putting a small clove of garlic in my ear. It seem any antibiotic is routed in one of these prescribed medications. Soooo discouraged and disappointed . Surely the medical profession is aware of this problem and the pharmaceuticals as well.
