You people are not listening to us. This has nothing to do with insufficient water intake or drinking sodas or with UTIs, yeast infection, etc.
The main symptom distinguishing this from the UTI and other urinary diseases is that the problem occurs INSTANTLY, LITERALLY IMMEDIATELY (or max within a few minutes) after swallowing of a little amount of alcohol. It is physically impossible for alcohol to travel so fast to the bladder and irritate it within 2 minutes after consuming it.
I know you want to help, but stop giving advice that this is a common urinary tract infection etc. It is not. I will be glad if those who have this problem continue to share their progress and others with different symptoms should open their own thread.

I have been following this thread in silence for a long time, desperate for some answers when I made my own connection. I am 99% sure, at least in my case, that the burning sensation only occurs when I have had caffeine in recent hours. When I don't have any caffeine or I have it early enough in the morning, no burning. The degree of the burning is also related to how long it has been since I had coffee, not how much alcohol I have been drinking. Though it sucks, I am glad to have an answer. I will update if my conclusions end up not being true or if I find anything else out, but for now it is by far the most solid conclusion I have found.

I have this same issue. I find if I urinate when it first comes on it goes right away and I'm fine for the rest of the night. Does anyone else have to urinate frequently after this?

YES! I feel as though I wrote this, but I know I didn't. I keep trying to tell everybody that what is happening is almost impossible. The slightest amount of alcohol makes INSTANT burning. It's not even five seconds and I'm on fire and peeing is extremely painful. For anyone not experiencing this, they have NO idea.

Agreed! Maybe it is psychological? Do allergic reactions work this fast, as well? Next time I drink, I am going to take note on when I feel the symptoms. I usually notice it as soon as I swallow. But maybe next time I should see if smelling alcohol makes me flair. Or wetting my lips? Just swooshing it in my mouth?

I believe many of the people on here are experiencing symptoms of HPV infection. Discontinue drinking alcohol and exercise regularly for about a year, and the symptoms should go away as your immune system clears the virus from your body.

I've been monitoring this thread for a couple of years, and believe I'm one of the few people on here who has had a urologist perform a cystoscopy.

Yes, camera inserted up the urethra so the doctor could examine the lining of my bladder.

What he found was that my bladder lining was very irritated, sort of inflamed, but he didn't know the cause. He tested for cancer, Interstitial cystitis, and bladder stones...all negative

A second urologist suggested it was diet related and recommended eliminating caffeine, chocolate, carbonation, and citrus to try and pinpoint what was causing the irritation. I did this but but have not been able to determine the culprit. He then said to remove tomato based products, bananas, and alcohol.

Alcohol of course is why I'm here in the first place, but is the alcohol causing the irritation or triggering the symptom?

I went two years without any alcohol and then took a sip of beer to see if my bladder had healed, but no, the intense urge to urinate and pain returned within two minutes of consumption.

The only medication that has provided some relief is Elmiron. You may want to ask your doc about it.

Thank you for understanding (I've made the post you've commented on), I feel better to know I'm not alone in this. But as we can see people are continually giving us the advice to discontinue drinking alcohol and start to work out etc... btw my alcohol consumption per year is 1- 2 glasses of wine or beer and I'm working out regularly, I don't drink sodas, coffee just green tea occasionally, I don't have a yeast infection or UTI and really this is not something 'just in my head'. So this is not the solution to this weird problem.

It's me again from 40 minutes ago. Just created an acct. I've seen four doctors, two of which were urologists. I'm considering visiting a DO specializing in urology. I'm lucky that I have very good health insurance. I'll keep ya'll posted!

It's not HPV. I've had several dozen tests done including STD testing. Nothing.

To answer the question of does this happen from sniffing or just swishing and spitting it out, no. For me it only happens if I swallow.

Yes. Swallowing even small amounts of alcohol, including cough syrup, triggers the response in about two minutes. I've timed it. Someone suggested it might be the yeast in beer, so I tried NA beer and had no effect.

There is no test for HPV, so that doesn't rule it out.

To qualify, there is no HPV test for men (except a biopsy from a genital wart, or possibly an anal pap if it is an anal infection). Women can get a cervical HPV pap test. Although, in Thailand, they have a urine test for HPV for men and women.

Alcohol is known to create hypersensitivity and burning or tingling sensation in the local area of the infection, i.e. usually glans of penis or rectum (not sure about women). Usually this symptom begins around four months after contracting the virus. A healthy immune system should clear the virus in about eight months. Alcohol prevents the elimination of the virus from the body, causing the virus to linger. Regular consumers of alcohol are known to carry the virus for extended periods of time, which may develop into cancer. Some believe that this is because alcohol reduces the amount of folate in the body, but no one's quite sure exactly why.

If someone with these symptoms were to get an HPV test and report the results back here, we could have a better idea whether or not HPV is diagnostically relevant.

Here are four previous posts from this thread that associate these symptoms with HPV:

"Okay so... After reading all of this I just wanted to throw something out there. I read a previous post on how it may be indicator of cancer and that caught my eye.
I am 22 years old and i have HPV, with precancerous cells that have been removed and luckily haven't come back. ButI did not ever have actual cancer.
The burning with alcohol started shortly after I started dating my current fiance. I never had a problem with this before I met him. I obviously did not have HPV before I met him so everything seems to fall into place.
Anyone else have HPV who is having these issues?
Also - I searched this tonight because I took a pm cold medicine with 10% alcohol and even that triggered it."

"Hey have you figured out anyhying???
I have the same things going on.
As a kid. I talking 14 years old and on I would have UTI's I cant count how many times I was perscribed antibiotics. Too many, on top of that some of the antibiotics would cause me to have yeast infections. Also after being perscribed antibiotics for strep throat.
(I don't know if this has anything to do with it. Or the cause of 'IC' anyone on here please respond if you have taken a lot of antibiotics through your lifetime.)
I had the gardasil (HPV)shot. All three of them. When I was 22. I am now 24 and have been diagnosed with HPV.
The reason I am on here is because I took a sip of wine. On an empty stomach an had the whole burning urination. And as well as the burning sensation even after peeing. I thought ot was because of being dehydrated. This happened earlier in the month same situation. Was drinking alcohol and the next day it started to burn .
I also have gall bladder problems. Does anyone else have this ?"

"I rarely drink but when I do I have the "burning" sensation everyone is referring to. I was diagnosed with HPV aboit 4 years ago but after a year it was gone. I've always thought they could be related."
