I've had stomach noise problems for quite some time and they became more noticeable when my work area was moved directly beside my manager and head boss. They have even commented, asking if I was hungry, at which point I had to laugh and tell them my stomach always made these noises. I find that the best way for me to deal with it is to laugh it off. I do type louder when the noises come and it's rather embarassing when I'm in meetings with others, but I've come to realize that we're all human and I'm sure that I hear the noises louder than others and if others hear them too, well, I'm sure they have unique issues of their own. It does make me feel awkward at times, but at the end of the day, I'm sure that my co workers never brought up the fact that my stomach is making noises and even if they did, who cares? I've learned that in other social situations when my stomach decides to start speaking, well that's life. I will try some of the things on this post and am quite happy to hear that a lot of other people have these issues as well. It's even more comforting to know I'm not alone. But I hope you all know that you don't have to suffer with the noises, you just have to embrace them (for the most part) and the more you laugh them off, or explain to those that happen to comment, the more comfortable you'll feel with these.
I have this problem. Every day i go to school im fine until history class.. i dont know why but i get into the class, i sit down, it gets quiet, and then my gut starts making very loud noises. I feel each noise coming and i try to control it but i just cant =/ does anyone have any suggestions?
just like alot of other people said
1) Drink alot of water
2) Go to the bathroom as much as you can
The "emptier" your intestines/bladder is the better
I usually go to the bathroom after every class and try to "empty" my intestines as much as possible at home
This has helped alot
3) Train yourself not to drink while you eat
I have done the above 3 and have almost eliminated my stomach noises...number 2 and 3 are the most important...its not hard to train yourself not to drink while you eat and try not to drink anything for at least an hour after you eat

I've been having the same problem since my first year of high school, and i'm now almost 21.
I've found that having a healthy balanced diet does help somewhat, but I can still feel/hear my stomach.
And for disguising the sounds i found it's better standing up, then sitting down. Cause you can move around, and sort of ease the movement of your stomach. So just standing up when you know it's coming can help.
I've never visited a doctor about this, but i will. And in the meanwhile I'm definitely gonna try some of the solutions suggested here.
Thank you guys.

I have been reading these posts and it seems like a lot of them are from young people - however I am a 49 year old who has been stricken with this problem very suddenly - with it first occurring about 6 months ago out of the blue. I have not tried eliminating all sugars from my diet yet, but have tried systematically eliminating other food categories, dairy etc. I am scheduled for a colonoscopy this week and I will be interested to see if it improves after that. I had problems with IBS years ago which abated after a screening colonoscopy found non-cancerous hyperplastic polyps (which are routinely removed if found).
Anyone suffering from this should see a Dr., maybe a true cause will be found eventually. I worry constantly about being heard, but truth be told I can't recall ever hearing anyone elses noises so loudly that I remembered or even remarked on it, so take heart.

Hi All,
I have had these stomach rumblings and noises for about 12 years. I know how embarrassing it is. I work in a corporate environment and I have to be in meetings with senior management and believe me this problem has kept me on the edge.
I had been to several doctors before and nothing worked. Recently I also went through the tests endoscopy, colonoscopy and flagyl tests. Everything came out to be negative. I was then diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome. At least after ruling out all the horrible diseases, I started researching for natural ways to calm myself and my system down. I don't know if I am cured yet but I do believe I'm relatively better than before.
Here are the things I have tried and I wanted to share with everyone. I dont know what may work for you, but there is nothing to lose.
- Apple Cider Vinegar (a few table spoons throughout the day with honey and water)
- Aloe vera concentrate (a few drops) in Water twice a day. If you can find aloe juice that should work too.
- I took a Reiki workshop over a weekend and that is extremely relaxing. There are many people who have been cured of major diseases with continued therapy.
- I eliminated caffeine from my diet. No tea not coffee, no soda. I reduced sugar intake. Infact I purchased Stevia, a natural sugar substitute.
- I am neither lactose intolerant nor wheat intolerant. Yet I started drinking lactaid and only moderate amount of milk products. I reduced wheat intake too.
- I purchased a hypnotherapy CD for IBS - just google for IBS Audio Program - Its about $90. It is a 100-day program. I am currently on my 40th day.
- I regularly visit an acupuncturist - my insurance covers the visit, so it doesn't cost much. Even w/o insurance the visit should be between $60-$80
- I have significantly reduced eating out. I prefer to eat home cooked, healthy food, rich in soluble fibre. Sometimes I add flax seeds in my cereal too.
- I have started meditating more and I believe being calm helps me a lot.
I tell myself, I shouldn't resist the moment that I'm in. I started to count how many times has my stomach made noises in the last week. I realized that the number wasn't anywhere to close the number of the moments I have been stressed with just the thought that my stomach will make noise. I have made serious attempts to calm myself down and meditation helped me a lot.
I hope something will work for you too. Like I said I am still working on myself and if I find anything else I will keep you posted.

I am right there with everyone up here. I have noticed my issue more and more since college, but it happened in class for me there too. I now work in an office/cube environment. My tummy noises are now constant whether I eat or not, whether I drink water or not. I have gotten rid of caffeine in my diet, I rarely eat sugar. I must say I enjoy drinking beer and other alcohol (i.e. carb filled heaven in a glass-that we are to be wary of), but I try to save that for the weekends, when I am less likely to deal with the aftermath in the company of other people. I have laughed it off for years, but it is a constant cause and possible product of stress, and I find it a miserable never-ending cycle. I am so relieved that so many others feel my pain, but if we find a definitive answer for ourselves, I hope that we'll all share it. I will if I do.
Good Lord, I hope I do. I am in my office right now, and my stomach wants to explode it seems... thank goodness for my coworkers with earbuds in and my ability to roll back (noisily) in my chair, cough, and otherwise distract from my rumbling. :-) Well, here's to happy stomachs guys!

Interesting read, i used to have this problem at school and it used to also get on my nervous like many of you. Mostly when the room with quiet and my gut would go to town, i would know it was coming and try to make it shut up :-)
I dont remember really having a problem. Im a slim guy in my early 20's, never really given a c**p about what I eat. I play football, jog daily and go to the gym. I recently took an interest in joining the forces and cut the likes of junk food eating out of my life, I have not drank coke in like 3 months and dont exactly drink alcohol much at all. Since a diet change where I eat the likes of pasta, potatoes, veg, fruit etc that its not very much noticable. It has got me freaked out because I dont want to be caring about taking a dump or when these noises want to take place. Id normally not care that much, but i dont think the forces is an ideal place for a problem like this. I drink alot of water and milk. Im so much more healthier and its annoying that ive gained this problem due to obviously my diet change and what i eat.
I know its all unique to each person, but what foods should I be avoiding.

I had the same situation. I started uni and noticed this happening to me. When i lie down to sleep my stomach would rumble and became noisy. Like it was moving around in a circle and when it hit a certain point in the circle it would make noises.
This caused me lots of stress and anxiety. I couldnt focus in class, in exams, i skipped lectures and classes and ended up quitting from the pressure.
After that i tried studying again but the timetable was more involved than uni. My lack of attendance was hard to hide and eventually i left because of the stress i got from the teachers looking at me like i was a pest and that i wasnt good enough. I got good grades and was very dedicated to the work, outside of the classroom anyways.
This caused me to fall into depression. I went to doctors but they just assumed it was IBS without tests. They didnt care or even suggested to test me. Just gave me basic meds which dont work.
After a year of being depressed i managed to find a job which doesnt require me to work in a quiet environment and hardly under supervision. Its not very good pay but it beats sitting at home being depressed. I didnt have to worry about my 'problem' and could eat anything i wanted... until recently when the boss wanted to shift me to a quiet environment. Practically like a classroom environment which i strongly fear, its dead quiet and after an embarassing moment i left claiming i was sick and right now im pretty much losing it mentally trying to figure out what to do.
My anxiety and depression seems to be coming back and i'm trying to find a way around this.
I have read enough forum posts to know this will be a life changing problem and limits every aspect of my life. I'll be forcing myself into a clean diet of possibly just oats and try to take meds to 'control' the problem.
I know theres no cure but hopefully i can find a way to control and make it less life ruining. I hope there is a cure someday.
I read stories of how fellow sufferers are married and living life with jobs and all i hope is that i can have the same. Demanding too much in life is something im no longer allowed to do.
Reading peoples stories let me know im not alone and as someone mentioned, i wish there was a company we all worked in together and so we wouldnt feel the pressure from our 'problem'. Lets altogether try live one day at a time and hope we make it through.

Hi everyone, same problem here. Few suggestions....
- If related to dairy (ANY milk product except yogurt, eg. creams, cheese), you're probably lactose intolerant. When we are babies we naturally have lactase enzyme made by our bodies. As we age we tend to drink less milk, for some people that can mean our body will limit or stop producing the enzyme. When they ingest a dairy product, the lactose can't be broken down, and therefore can't be absorbed. Our bacteria in our gut use this lactose as food, and break it down. The problem is when they break it down, they form gas. This is the noises you hear (and can maybe feel) moving around. Then any left over lactose in our gut will draw water into the gut and a few hours later will result in diarrhea. This can happen even in 'normal' people if they eat/drink too much food with lactose. The bodies natural lactase enzyme just can't handle the load, and there will be left over lactose in your gut, causing symptoms like above.
- If possible try having more bowel movements through the day (In other words: take more dumps through the day). When we are kids, (not babies), we usually have one large movement in the morning and that it. As we age, our bowels aren't as good at moving. This is especially true in old folks, who are often constipated and require a high fiber diet. How does fiber work you ask? Well, fiber is a carb that our body can't break down and remains relatively solid (maybe formed is a better word). Since it is undigestable our bowels use this as help to 'keep things moving' and 'push things along', emptying our bowels quicker. The problem? Gas, (which makes a lot of noise also) though I'm not sure how it's formed, so I won't go there. I've heard that drinking a lot of water helps with this problem and after 2-3 weeks of increased fiber intake, it's supposed to go down.
-Trigger foods may irritate your gut, causing sounds. I find for me it's coffee. I can't say it's caffeine, because if I drink soda or tea I'm ok. Try eliminating things from your diet one at a time until you narrow it down. and do it for at least 2 days or more. I tried this over a weekend when I didn't need my coffee. Now I don't drink coffee, but if I do (like in a social setting), I dilute it and sip slowly which helps.
-Chest pain (and maybe accompanying stomach pain) following a meal could be sign of acid reflux. Other signs can be an acid taste/feeling in the back of your throat, or a cough that is worse at night (when you lie down). Try avoiding big meals, and also avoid spicy, greasy, or sugary foods and drinks with a lot of acid (Juices), or caffeine (Coffee, Sodas, Energy drinks). A short course of over the counter Omeprazole for 1-2 weeks will help. If this doesn't, you should see your doc to rule out more serious causes and/or complications. (eg. Infection, Ulcers)
If you plan on visiting your doc, try to give as much info as possible. Like in what setting do the sounds occur? Only during stressful times or is it non-specific? Do you tend to pass a lot of gas? Do you have diarrhea? Constipation? How are your stools? (Come on, we ALL look after, lol) Well formed or thin caliber? Dark or pale? Hows your diet? Alcohol?
Anyway that's all I got for now, I'll drop by later if I can remember others...

try enteric coated peppermint pills...it's supposed to calm the colon. I found some with oregano oil for about $20. I've had this same problem for over 20 years and this seems to have helped so far. Just don't take the peppermint pills too late because peppermint is a stimulant.
Do you have any thyroid trouble?
