OMG! This makes me really mad!!! I have curly hair, and I've learned how to maintain it to get some gorgeous curls! I'm much younger than you too! I do understand though with you that you have been at war with your hair. When I didn't know what I knew now, my hair was frizzy and outrageous! I hated it! But I've used the internet and realized a lot of things about curly hair. You have to learn how to maintain it, to care for it. You have to love it too. Most hairdressers don't know how to deal with curly hair, and I don't blame them since most people have straight hair. But if a hairdresser treats your curly locks like straight hair of course your gonna hate it! the part about curly hair being a medical problem makes me get really upset. For me, I don't think it's a problem, I think it's a solution to this world being mostly straight haired people.

Learn about your hair, and your hair will be beautiful just like you.

Here are some tips on curly hair.

-Never brush it! Use a wide tooth comb and only in the shower too! After you've stepped out don't comb it! It allows the hair to form curly and won't make it frizz!

-air dry it! Using extensive heat can damage the hair causing breakage. Or at least use a diffuser.

-If your hair is wet, blot with an old cotton t shirt, or a microfibre towel, but oh please, don't use a towel and rub you hair. That cause frizz!

-when combing your hair in the shower (wide tooth comb and don't use a brush!) start at the ends and make your way up, that way you don't "break" your hair .

-Get a good haircut, from someone who actually knows curly hair. If you get a haircut be someone who doesnt, it could end up triangle shaped and a flat top. Not a good combination!

-HYDRATE! Your curls crave for some hydration! If you don't condition it, it ends up dry, so invest in some good conditioner and always use a leave in.

-Don't shampoo it every day! It strips the hair if it's natural oils, and those natural oils are very important! try not to use a shampoo with sulfate(which cause lather) because it strips the hair as said earlier.

So just learn to embrace your hair. There are many sites on the internet to help. One of my favourites is ***edited by moderator*** web addresses not allowed It has information and has a "curlmart" which you can get curly hair products from. Plus this sites includes salons, and many reviews about them. I'm not sure if you'll ever change your mind about curly hair, or if you'll read and learn about it, but it's important to just learn and educate yourself since there's nothing wrong with that.

I am a Certified Paul Mitchell Hair Designer aswell I am a cosmotology instructor!! There are a couple things you can do with your "unruly, curly hair!" There is a new treatment called the Keratin Hair Straightening.... It takes about 1 1/2hours to complete.... it straightens your hair with NO FRIZZ and extra shine, even in HIGH HUMIDITY and will last about 3 months, the cost around $200-$500. I perform these for $198.00 in West Palm Beach, Florida!!! The other would be to use Matrix Smoothing Shampoo/Conditioner (orange container) or even better use Redkin "All Soft," (beige container). Use a wide tooth comb in the shower to comb the conditioner in and comb thru again after you have rinsed. Than apply a serum, Paul Mitchell, "Smoothing," or any type of heavy oil... comb this thru than air dry. Don't mess with your hair much while it is drying b/c your hands will cause some frizzing!!!

For info on managing curly hair, check out ***edited by moderator*** web addresses not allowed. I didn't like having to wash/wet my hair everymorning and go out with wet hair. There are lots of products to tame the frizz but I dind't like the sticky, crispy feel of most of them. Finally I got a Brazillian Keratin treatment. It calmed my hair by 75% and then flat-ironing takes only a couple minutes. Also it doesn't frizz so much in the humidity. My favorite hair serum is Garnier Fructice because it's very light, smoothes frizz and adds shine without the sticky gluey feel of thicker serums. I also saw a gal the other day with shiny, frizz-less curls so I asked her what she uses. She told me she puts on "3-in-1" brand mousse and Aussie hairspray while it's wet. Well it looked great but still it's the same story of needing to start each day with wet hair and must air-dry. With the keratin treatment, I put my hair in a shower cap and only wash it 1-2 times per week.

Great!!! I had a hair stylist who cut my hair great but then she moved 3000 miles away. I haven't found ANYONE who knows how to cut thick curly hair since. She moved in 2002!!!!! Hair stylists don't know what to do with this type of hair. If you google hairstyles for curly hair or whatever they show all these great bob styles and all the models basically have straight hair. Not helpful for me in the slightest. I am also 46 years old and heavy so all the hairstyles would look ridiculous on me anyway. I really really HATE my hair. Tired of looking ridiculous all the time. I would love to just have a professional look to my hair appropriate for my age but it's completely hopeless.
As far as products go, I have had the best luck with products for African American women even though I am Caucasian. They help a lot but it would be nice to have a nice cut for a change.

Its definitely unfortunate that taking care of curly hair has been something ignored for years among the hair industry. Not too long ago, all hair stylists, media, advertisements and even hair product lines COMPLETELY ignored the fact that not everyone has straight manageable hair. Taking care of curly hair is a completely different ball game. But the great thing about it, is once you learn how to properly wash, style and treat it- you will see that it was a hidden gem and will possibly become your favourite physical feature! I remember I hated my curly hair when younger, I was the only one that had curly hair in whole family, my mom had no idea what to do with it. I permanently straightened it, relaxed it and cut it off- soon to realize that I was doing it all wrong, Not to mention all the unfortunate bullying and comments from people about my unruly hair. It took a while to get there but now all I do is motivate everyone to embrace their natural hair. Now that I know how, I have people wishing they had my unique hair. Your natural beauty is beautiful! It just needs to be embraced right ;). You are absolutely right hun! They don't understand...I'm 32 and I have very frizzy crazy hair. Have you heard of co-washing? Only wash your hair with conditioner it really helps. Start by massaging the scalp with only conditioner and rinse. Then cover the whole hair from root to tip with conditioner and leave for as long as you can in the shower. Rinse out. Our hair is extremely dry compared to straight and shampooing it badly strips away all our natural oils. Then I use de Lorenzo" The ends" it's really good and sleek it back into a pony until dry to set my hair as tame as I can get it. Hope this helps.☺
