How strange to stumble upon this website. I had my gallbladder taken out about 4 years ago. The first two years after having it out I was fine to drink and never had any side effects. But these last 2 years have been a completely different story. Any amount of any kind of alcohol leaves me so incredibly sick the next day. It's strange going to bed I won't feel sick but I wake up and as the day progresses my body drastically declines with the most violent fits of vomiting about every 30 minutes for 10+ hours. It seems the last 6 months that these spells have gotten increasingly worse in severity. I ended up in theER due to the last one where I'd only consumed 3 drinks over a 6 hour period and had drank 2 bottles of water when I got home that night. It makes no sense to be that sick with that little amount of alcohol.... My father had his gallbladder out as well and he gets violently sick within an hour of consuming any alcohol. Regardless I am never drinking again. It's not worth the aftermath. I don't think it is a coincidence that this many people have the same issue. It needs to be addressed by the surgeons performing these surgeries. That is not to say I wouldn't make the same decision. I have not missed gallbladder attacks one minute. Even thinking about them makes me shiver. As far as those having trouble eating and causing diarrhea my dr gave me colestipol that I take twice in the mornings an hour before I eat breakfast and this helps me have normal stool no matter what foods I eat. I also have ibs and this medicine has been a saving grace. I can eat and not have to immediately run to the potty after.

I work in the health care field and have a hard time believing a doctor would say he NEVER had anyone complain of that issue. Perhaps because they see you shortly after the surgery for your follow up and a lot of folks are just getting their diet figured out and probably haven't experimented much with alcohol yet. I had mine out a month ago and do okay with ONE drink occasionally. I did push it at a celebration and experienced the rapid inebriation and excessive vomiting others have described. Before surgery I consumed probably 1-2 drinks a month. So I would say I don't have any underlying problem. Every one is different!

i had my gall bladder removed april 1st 2014 and have had no issues whatsoever eating whatever i want. I had laparendoscopy. I also am able to drink just fine more than 6 glasses if i pace myself even more no pain no nausea everything is fine. i waited 2 wks to start drinking and i've had absolutely no issues eating spicy foods or greasy foods and of course drinking alcohol. I also have gerd and dyspepsia. i'm on rantidine x 2 daily and nexium x 1 daily. I am able to drink exactly the same as before! I don't get drunk any faster. I didn't drink for 2 months before my surgery I'm not sure if that made a difference but I'm doing great! After i got my gallbladder removed i was in excruiciating amount of pain i had to go back to my surgeon the day after surgery they put me on hydrocodine with acetophemine 40 mg for 2 days then they dropped it down to 20 then 10 then eventually 5 once i was off my pain meds and ibprofen i began drinking by then it had been 2 weeks no pain from my gallbladder other than when i breathe in deeply which i'm told is normal. SO uh, yeah for those of you out there that are about to have gallbladder surgery that are concerned about whether or not you'll be able to drink the way you did before the surgery everybody is different for me i've had no issues whatsoever i started off drinking apple cider to gauge if i'd be okay then i went ahead and started drinking kraken the black spiced rum and have had no issues i dont drink alcohol straight just mixed drinks 1 shot per 8 oz drink. Good luck and hope everything works out! Also remember that the filter you've had before, your gallbladder, has been removed so every oz of alcohol is going directly to your liver. Just something to keep in mind.

I removed my gallbladder in 2007. I can still drink any kind of alcohol, I've had vodka, beer, rum, cocktails, shots etc. But after I have way too much I start throwing up, both alcohol and bile (that never used to happen). I would still feel a bit buzzed in the morning and have some strange bowel movements. (This is also happens when I haven't eaten anything for more than 6 hours on end). I also noticed that I have "food poisoning" (or that's just what the doctors call it) and throw up bile at least 6-7 times consecutively; this would happen around two times a year and there was no specific kind of food (fatty vs. healthy) that would trigger it, just random. "Change in weather" , "food poisoning" or "oh, some virus", they would say.

I had my gallbladder removed a month ago, I am not a big drinker maybe 1 time every 6 months, yesterday I had some drinks at the river (just beer) like 4, I am a light weight so the fact I was some what tipsy is no surprise, but the fact that I now feel like I am going to die is all new, I have been throwing up, dizzy, stomach cramps and alot more, I have had a hangover before but this is different. I am just going to stop drinking all together, the pain and discomfort is not worth it.

Now after 2 doubles and I'm drunk-3 and I'm f**ked. I can say honestly that I can't have a long enjoyable night anymore...

I want to share my positive experience from my surgery. I had gallstones in my gallbladder and had my gallbladder removed. my experience after the surgery was positive a week after the surgery I was able to eat better I did had a hamburger and french fries on the 7th day and cause me diarrhea. After, I was a little worried of consuming alcohol but it was my birthday on the second week and decided to go celebrated. I started with one shot of tequila (patron) and then I took another shot about 30 minutes later then I got a glass of water and then after I had a beer again drinking water constantly then I had another beer and I have to say I did feel a little of the headache but as soon as I would drink my water I will feel better. I didn't get that tipsy or drunk I fell ok and woke up next day okay I didn't have a hangover or a headache or vomiting but I did drink a lot of water before going to bed I didn't eat anything after having my alcohol especially any fat food. My experience with alcohol was not negative so I think every ones body it's different.. hope it helps..

Hello. I am 26 years old and have had s ton of medical problems. I had my galbladder removed about 5 yeRs ago and I had a surgery done on my pancreas a few times. I have a mutated gene that caused me to form pancreatitis. But I guess to the point. Ever since I got my galbladder removed I have not been able to enjoy drinking alcohol. I think that alcohol doesn't sit well with us after it has been removed. I know that since I have pancreas problems that means I really can't drink see as alcohol is the #1 cause of pancreatitis. But for your husband I think that alcohol is just something that the "no galbladder crew" have to either give up or enjoy in small quantities... Unfortunately... I have have had to give it up completely since the age of 23... Which was really REALLY hard for me because come on what does every person in their 20's do?... Go out and drink with their guy/girl friends!!! But every time I have drank since all these stomach problems arose has sent me straight to the E.R. With a minimum stay of about 5 days in the hospital. I realized it was time for me to grow up and start acting more like an adult and do the smart thing and quit it completely... It has been hard but it's better then spending my life in the hospital. The past 6 years I have basically lived in a hospital but it's getting better! I just have to watch everything that I eat and drink very closely since there is no cure for the mutated gene that I have. I know this probably doesn't answer your question for your husband drinking... I don't think there is any alcohol that will sit right for his no galbladder stomach... I'm sorry and wish him the best!!!!

Hey gallbladderless family!

I am 23 years old and had my gallbladder removed almost 6 weeks ago. I must admit I did like to have a drink with the girls and my family over dinner or maybe a night out. During my university days I drunk liquors like they were going out of fashion. However, after reading all of your responses I am scared to try any alcohol again.....but I miss being able to have a casual drink with friends/family....especially now that xmas is 5 days away! Should I risk it and give it a go? If so what drink should I try? Also what should i eat or stay away from during the day before I start to drink?

i am feeling so excluded from the social enviroments.

PLEASE HELP ME EXPERIENCED GALLBLADDERLESS FAMILY

I had my gall bladder removed 27 Aug this year and was fine for 3 months! I used to drink whisky before the op but stopped! I decided to try light wine I have for the last month been getting as sick as a dog with pains across the chest and back excruciating to say the least and dont stop vomiting for over an hour with pains in my back like I want to die! And after pain killers and buscopan and whatever else and vomiting this up again it subsides! I do not want to believe its the wine but the more I read up and think about it it has to be! Wine being 1 of the most acidic drinks!

You got that right. Legalize marijuana. It's an herb given to us to protect and serve pain, anxiety, nausea, panic disorder and a myriad of other ailments. Liquor prohibition lasted 50 years until the government just gave up. It's time to do the same with marijuana. I have found that most cannabis smokers do not drink, take pills, nor is it a "gateway" to a deeper and darker side than meth, etc. The herb grows wild in some places, ya know?

i had my gallbladder removed on Tuesday (it is now Sunday) and I had 3 shots of tequila and a 40oz bottle of Smirnoff ice last night. It got to me pretty quick and hit me harder than I thought but I had no pain at all
