Everyone reacts differently...

I am 28 and have had flawless skin my whole life. 2 years ago I started experiencing adult onset acne. I tried Proactive, Natures cure, clindamycin, Retin A, Dead sea minerals, Tetracycine, and Ortho-trycycline. I have been on Accutane 80 mg daily for 2months 3wekks now. I have noticed a huge difference on my back, the acne seems to be not so ( all over the place, but minimal, yet Red. Sometimes painful. I Use Vasaline for my lips. It is the ONLY thing that works. For the spot Acne treatment I use the Proactive Refining Mask. (this works overnight)

Make sure to get proper sleep. Sleep depravation can result in an acne crisis as well. Drink plenty of water... I can see the results and I'm sure in the next couple if weeks and into the 4th month I will see even better results.

I will not lie. I have experienced some more severe side affects.

#1 Chapped lips

Sensitivity to Florescent lighting, Last night for the first time some hearing problems, constipation, Fatigue, lack of ability to concentrate, short tolerance, and some slight depression, I know this is all associated with the drug, but it's not so serious that I am concerned, but for others if you experience any of these symptoms and your intuition tells you to notify someone. I strongly suggest you do.

EVERYONE reacts differently, and there is a reason they MUST notify everyone of these side affects.

GOOD LUCK to all of you.

I've been on Isotretinoin 40mg per day (accutane-trade name) for the past 2 weeks now; I have bad breakouts, matter of fact it has increased over this past two weeks. However, this was made known to me while I was prescribed on this drug, also I have noted that the acne dry out soon comparitively. I strongly believe that you have to work closely with your Dr under correct guidence I would think that it would yield a +ve result. I have read lot of side effects and other than dry lips I have currently not had any, and may be that would continue in the long run too..touch wood.

Hey. Does anyone know if accutane is a 5 month thing, or if it is possible to get off it early??

I have been at uni for two years now, and just finished a 5 month course on Roaccutane. First 2 months 40mg and the latter 3 on 80mg.

Throughout the whole time I have had sore/dry lips as well as dry skin. (Use Vitamin E cream on both lips and face, works a treat)

However, The past 2 months I have had severe groin strain and now lower back pain too! along with slight depression.

I also play semi-professional football and haven't been able to join in pre-season training or play latter games of the season simply because of the back and groin pains, it could be a coincidence but I believe accutane is the cause!

I still have a fair few spots on my face, but the doctor told me that roaccutane stays in the blood system for 6 weeks, so hopefully by that time those remaining spots will be gone!!

I am a 19 year old male.

I just finished month 4. The usual side effects, not depressed... just don't want to go out as much when I break out, that's normal. Been on 80 mg and still have breakouts every other week or so. The doctor told me to start 120mg every other day. Hopefully it'll get better by the end of this month. I see here that a lot of ppl don't see results until the end of the 5th month so it gives me a lot of hope. Plus it has been looking and feeling better this past week.

My freshman year in high school (2005) I started to get pretty severe acne, I was then on accutane for 6 months, 10mg a day, and my acne cleared up completely. After that, my junior year, I started getting zits again, and then my neck started to break out, so now I'm on 80mg a day, and my skin is dry, my lips crack, and I get a nosebleed every once in a while. I have been on accutane again for almost a month now, and the only improvement i've seen is that my skin hasn't broke out, and has started to smooth out a little bit

I've been on accutane 50mg/day for 1 week now. I've noticed a slight improvement. I am still breaking out, but they seem to be going away faster. My skin on my face is super dry and peeling as if it were sunburnt. My lips haven't been too dry...I started using Aquaphor along with my normal chapstick even before starting the medication to help prevent that side effect. I had my first nose bleed this morning. I'm very active, so I'm praying that I don't experience joint/muscle pain as well as any of the other serious side effects. Hopefully accutane works for me. I've tried everything from topical creams to antibiotics and nothing seemed to help. This was my last resort because of all of the side effects, but I'm 24 years old and tired of having acne on my face and body. Hope this works! :-D

Ok so I have to share 3 products that saved my life while on accutane. They are products for Mary Kay. The first is called Satin Lips and it's a 2 step process. The first is the mask and it exfoliates all the dry skin off your lips then the second part is the balm which makes your lips feel like velvet which is so different from the way they have been feeling throughout the last 6 months while on accutane. It also contains no alcohol which all over the counter lip products contain in order to prolong the shelf life and alcohol acutally dries out your lips even more. The next product is Satin Hands which I used on my whole body and it again made it feel so good. Exfoliated all the dry skin that I had been getting from accutane. The last is oil free hydrating gel that can be used on your whole body and made it feel soooo good. Anyway I would totally recommend these products to anyone on accutane...they saved my life and my skin and lips from being so darn dry. Here is the website www.marykay.com/heidipeters Good luck to everyone...I am finishing up my 6th month this month and although it's been an emotional journey I am soooo happy that I went through it and didn't quite.

I wouldn't deter anyone from taking accutane, but I was one of those few that had many of the side effects possible with the drug. I had the normal chapped lips, peeling lips, but then it progressed into having a rash under my nose (so bad I had to stop taking the meds for a month), then bloody crusty nostrils, body aches all the time, headaches, eczema (minor), hives (minor), depression, but the final results was when my eyes became swollen. At that point, I told the doc, NO MORE! I'm ready to hurt people (from the depression) & look like a scary circus clown.

Take the drug if needed, I KNOW how awful it is to have bad acne. I wouldn't blame anyone for taking this medicine once all options are taken. Just be aware of the side effects & keep in touch with your doctor when they happen.

Good luck to all taking the drug!!! :-D

im going to give everyone some positive information. it is a known fact that only 1 out of 12 people suffer the initial breakout. IT EFFECTS PEOPLE IN TOTALLY DIFFERENT WAYS. my dad is a dermatologist and has so many things positive to say. also he says dont read up much on accutane/roaccutane on the internet forums, beacuse it can have some neative effect on your self esteem before you start the drug. I have had two mates who have started accutane. one has been on it for a month and a bit and his skin is better than someones who doesnt have acne already, as soon as the first week finsished his skin was clearing up straight away, know initail breakout! my other mate has been on it for 3 months. NO INITIAL breakout either. just slight dryness of his skin and very chapped lips. but its something u can deal with for a clear face. i have acne myself and start roaccutane on monday. im scared but with all the positive effects its having on my mates theres no doubt ive made the correct decision. dont listen to all the negative things people say about it. itll just make u feel worse. when if u look at the positive reviews it will just make u excited to go on this journey. hope this helps haha. cheers

I took accutane, about 10 years ago, and it did wonders. During the 6mth course of the treatment my acne did get worse, but by the 5th or 6th month my face looked better than ever. I had a severe case of acne that was resistant to all over-the-counter, as well as perscription topical creams and antibiotics. I had whiteheads, blackheads, red bumps and lumps under the skin. Nothing ever worked like accutane. I did experience very, very dry lips and my eyes were sensitive to cold. I took it during the winter, so when I was in contact with wind, my eyes would tear up. I did have bad night vision but it wasn't anything that bad. Well...ten years later, I had a baby and now my hormones are out of wack. My face started breaking out again for the first time in ten year. My doctor recommended going back on the accutane treatment because once again nothing else would work on my skin and everything would irritate my skin and burn. I just started back on accutane and I have no fears. When your acne is really, really bad and all else fails I definately feel like accutane is the way to go, if you dont plan on having children in the next few months. My mother also used accutane when she was battling the same acne problems. She never had any sever side effects either.

this comment was left a long time ago but i dont know whats right and whats wrong but my derm told me not to take antibiotics while on accutane because it can increase the chances of developing pressure in the brain which is a rare side effect of accutane with or without antibiotics. as a matter of fact, my blood results came in after my first month and i had been sick with a cold so my white blood count was very very high since my body was fighting the infection. i had not taken antibiotics but when my derm got my results, she wouldn't refill my prescription until she called me to be sure i was not taking antibiotics. i know acne is frustrating, and we all want it gone a.s.a.p. but i don't think its a good idea to take antibiotics AND accutane. good luck all!
