I don't want to scare anyone but I had this same pressure and mine turned out to be anal cancer.

it sounds like pelvic floor dysfunction. it can cause rectal pressure. it is when the pelvic floor muscles are in chronic spasm. which would be why you feel the pressure all the time. some more symptoms are: constipation, diarrhea, abdomonal pain, pelvic pain, lower back pain, uninary frequency, urinary burning, slow steam, gas, bloating, painful intercourse. everyone has different symptoms but it can be fixed by pelvic floor therapy given by a physical therapist.

It's could be caused by pelvic pain and trigger points. Please read "A headache in the pelvis" or search on that to go to the site. I'm seeing a massage therapist trained in triggerpoint therapy and some days I don't have the pain at all. There is also some internal work you can do but you need a qualified person to show you.

I hope this helps. I understand the pain and frustration.

to the people who are feeling the rectal pressure, be careful, my husband had the same problem and it turned out to be a rectal abscess, which was from a staph infection, my son got it a few days after, and now i am headed to the hospital for the same thing. he had to have it surgically drained, but if an abscess bursts it can kill you, so i would advise going to the er, or at least a doctor. hope you feel better.

Muscle tension in the rectal area can cause symptoms which can make one think they have prostate or genital problems on going. Even a mild low back pain, especially in thin individuals, can lead one to think they have bladder infections, hemorrhoids, VD, or prostatitis (in men) or cervix/uterine infections (in women).

Slightly pinch (lay hand upon) the lower abdomen, genital, rectum area to determine if the pain is in that location. Men can feel their prostate between the anus and scrotum or better yet with a finger in the anus to see if it is sore to the touch.

Concentrate on the area to see if you are tensing muscles, especially around the rectum, like when you need to hold in your urine.

And of course, there may be a more serious problem such as an infection.

I have been suffering with this urgent need to have a BM all week. My rectum is totally empty, but I can expel a jelly like substance if I strain hard enough. I was on amoxicilin and got very horrible diarrhea, so I stopped taking it Monday. It is now Thursday and I still have this feeling I need to go. I think I will prolapse my rectum eventually. I wonder if I took too many immodium, also.

Hi all,

I just want to say that I've read all the posts on this forum and I sympathesize with all of you on this anal pain and fear what it could be. Like many of you, I've felt so much pressure and soreness in my rectum about 3 days ago, that it makes me want to knock myself out. I went to ER 2 days ago and they couldn't find anything, and only told me to go back to my primary physician to be referred to a colon disease specialist. I'm going to see my physician first thing next Monday morning. Eversince then, I have been implementing some recommendations made by my ER physicians, which seemed to have helped:

1. Take stool softener. I take Colace 100 mg twice a day.
2. Eat fruits, especially ones with lots of fibers. I eat two apples and two asian pears daily, and sometimes throw in some papaya and kiwi. My doctor does not recommend eating raw veggies because they cause gas and may worsen problem with bloating stomache (which I see some of you have).
3. After bowel movement, I do sitz bath (sitting yourself in a tub of warm water) for about 15 to 20 minutes.
4. Drink lots of water.
5. Absolutely avoid spicy food and coffee or anything caffeinated.
6. Do brisk walking for 20 minutes, twice a day.

After I implemented these recommendations, the situation seemed to improved a bit. The pressure and soreness is still there in my rectum, but now they're within my tolerance level. The enormous amount of veggies and fruits I ate helped to give enough bulk so that I don't have to push as hard during bowel movement. The Sitzbath is especially helpful after the bowel movement, relieving some of the pain and soreness.

Like many of you, I don't know what is causing my conditions. But unfortunately I have a history of STD's and other condition in the anal/rectum area, which means the odds are against my favor. Still, I'm trying not to second guess anything, it won't do me any good. Best of luck to all of you and I hope some of things I have shared with you here can help.

hello to all,
I had rectal pressure recently and I found out it was pressure from the psoaz and the iliacus muscle. Find a good qualified massage therapist to help you with this otherwise they can mess you up even more. Of course find out first that it is nothing serious. I took all the tests and they all came back neg, that god!!! I sit down at work all day so that would really irritate it. On the weekends it would get better but still be noticeable especially if I sat down for any length of time. I did ALOT of research and found this out myself and then went to have it worked on and it worked. YOu can ge some immediate relief by doing some psoaz stretches.. Just look online for Psoaz stretches and you will find help there. Good luck.

I have read your post and I recently within the last 3 months have had the same issue with pressure in the rectum area. I was diagnosed with C Diff twice. It didn't make sense to me the first time because it felt as though I was constipated and could not use the bathroom. I got really bad stomach pains but I really couldn't see how I had C Diff because I was not having diarrea and that is one of the main symptoms of C Diff. This was like 4 months ago. I felt better for awhile after taking Vancomycin and was treated in the hospital, but recently have begun to feel the same symptoms again. I'm so scared and don't know what to do. When I read a post that stated it was something more minor than what I was thinking and I got my hopes up and felt a little better that I wasn't the only one going through this. I also hope that someone can help me. I have just had my first grandchild and feel I can't enjoy being a grandmother. Any suggestions for me?

I just read all the previous posts and I have also had the rectal pressure...but for 3 years now. When I first felt it, thought it was my vaginal wall or cervix, went to OB Gyn who sent me for an ultrasound, and they found a tumor on my ovary. I had surgery, they removed the tumor and my ovary. It went away for about six weeks (while I was on major pain medication), them I felt it again. I went back to the doctor. Nothing was found. I asked for a referral to a gastrointerologist. He said I had hemorrhoids, that I needed to exercise and add more fiber. I still feel it. Constantly. It NEVER goes away and I am always uncomfortable. I am 32 and have had my first child two years ago. Prolapse was ruled out. Does anyone have any suggestions on what it could be? The only time the pain is relieved is when I am having a bowel movement. Odd, isn't it?????

Hi, I was hoping to find an answer on this post other then just a go see your doctor answer. I have not so i decided to post something similar to the first user.

I dont like to just wait for things to fix themself. It drives me crazy, so naturally when it has to do with my BUTT, im not patient.
I have been taking a probiotic for a good 3 or more months now for Ibs. It has helped great. I recently one day about 1 week ago started feeling like i had to poop, but couldnt. that lasted for days, until i bought some prune juice and finally went a load. My poop hasnt been hard really this whole time. Its more like, theres just no motility. no movement or something. So i have been drinking more water, and trying to get more fiber. I have been going a lot lately, like 3 or 4 or 5 times a day, and its soft not hard, but it takes me like 10 minutes just for anything to come out, only when i really relax and push hard. if its not big and hard, why is it so long to come out?

Also, i am having constant almost rectal pressure. Like i have to go but im holding it in. but when i go to the bathroom, it doesnt just come out. sometimes it wont at all and i will have to come back to try like 1 hour later. after I go, i feel better temporarily. But then 30 mintutes later, i feel the pressure again. WHat is it and why!

and is it going to go away? will just increasing my fiber make it stop?

Hi. I posted earlier as well back in January 2009. It has now been 9 months since my last post on here. During this time, I've had rectal pressure and rectal irritation. It feels like a lot of what everyone on here has already mentioned. My stomach feels bloated. I feel like I have to drink prune juice all the time. I go through about a gallon every 2 days. I feel like I have to go to the bathroom everytime I eat. I also drink lots of bottled water as I no longer drink water out of the faucet. I don't drink anything other than water and prune juice. Nothing else. I have been so scared with this feeling in my rectum. Since that time I have had CT Scans, Ultrasounds, Blood Tests. I was told that I didn't have hemorroids. They did say that I do have a cyst on one of my ovaries, but I don't think that this would be causing this. Nothing else has been found to date. I'm very scared and very confused. The way it feels is like if it is swollen or blistered. I also don't have an STD. Also my tailbone also sometimes feels sore. I don't know what it can be and am still hoping that it goes away. I am desperate for answers and don't know where to turn. If anyone can help, please reply. I'm tired of seeing doctors as they never seem to find anything and because of this they automatically assume that you are searching for drugs or narcotics.

One last thing I failed to mention...I feel like I want to give up and sometimes I feel like I'm useless to everyone in my family. I don't know what to think or do anymore. But again if anyone is out there has any suggestions or can help me because it feels as though my life is over ( what I mean by that is I don't feel like if I can do anything enjoyable any longer or be a mother to my kids or a grandmother to my granddaughter or a wife) I pray for all of us that are going through this or something similar. And we will all get help so we can go on with our lives. God Bless U All and Good Luck!!
