you can drink alcohol they even say red wine is good for you just drink water also. This will equalize your blood to an isotonic solution. Soooo just drink a couple cups b4 bed.

This has happened to me on several occasions...I had kidney stones too large to pass. I had a lithotripsy and the pain went away, but now it's back on both sides. Another kidney stone????

gday

i also get the same pains. During the week when i work, i wake up at 6.30am and there isnt a pain but on weekends, i try and sleep into around 8 or 9am, but the pain is very sore. its painful the breath deeply, but after i urinate, all is gone. My joints also seem a little sore.
The strange thing is that when i drink alcohol, i wake up the next morning feelin good. But then around 4day after drinking alcohol last, i slowly get back to sore joints, and sore kidney when i wake up.
Its been on and off for a few years now. All blood tests etc are fine. i try and be active, not overweight, and eat the best i can.
not sure what it could be.?? any ideas?

Hi I am Dennis,

I was so happy when I saw this post, because I have been suffering with this problem for 12 years and went to see the doctor once, but he could not find anything wrong with me. I get the severe pains in both my kidneys when I wake up in the morning on my own accord.
As soon as I get up to brush my teeth or sit up in bed the pain begins to subside and eventually goes away completely. I have noticed that the pain occurs when I have slept for more than 7hrs or so. There has been some occasions in which the pain has carried on throughout the day and did not disappear when I got out of bed, but this is not often. The pain is tricky because it feels as if its in the lower back but its deep inside in the kidney area, the pain intensifies as you breath in and if you try breathing in and holding your breath the pain magnifies.

Has anyone at least found the name for this condition? Is there anyway we can raise awareness in the medical profession to really studying this condition very well, because from what I have read and from my own experience the doctors can never pin point or find any hard evidence of this problem.

I am going to try Cranberry juice, Vitamin D and lots of water before I go to bed, and of course try and eat early before 6pm.

I will let you know how this goes.

I too am suffering from these symptoms. The pain is in both sides of my body but seems to be more prominent in the left hand side. I have had 2 urine test, 2 blood test, an ultra sound of my kidneys and an IV CT scan of my abdomen. The doctor did find a small trace of blood in my urine but said this was normal. I am not feverish but can sleep up to 15 hours a day if left alone. I was diagnosed with a superficial blood clot in my groin area 2 weeks ago and soon after this pain in my kidneys began. My doctor does not want to treat me with antibiotics and seems to think that if I am not happy with his lack of diagnosis then I should get a second opinion - another pair of eyes might find the problem was what he said. I am in agony in the mornings but it does not subside. It is worse though in the mornings or if I rest. I am now constipated and my urine is yellow and murky. My poo when I push hard enough is hard and has mucous throughout it. Please shead some light here before I go crazy. I have not changed my diet or done anything that might explain this pain. I am 36 years old with no history of kidney problems. :'(

im a 24yr old female with the same symptoms as prev listed, ie for bout 2years kidney pain both sides waking me up 5am, relieved by standing or sitting up.

i had trace blood in my urine, normal bloods, no infection, nothing shown on xray, nothing found on ultrasound.

i thought i was going crazy, the pain got alot worse for a few weeks then one morning i passed alot of blood when i peed n this extreme pain hit me and super urgency to pee again! it was awful, i phoned my doctor who told me i most likely just passed an undetected kidney stone, which can be the size of a grain of sand so not impossible to miss on a scan, about 10-20% are undetected.

my symptoms almost completely disappeared instantly following this, i still have mild pain if i sleep longer than 7 hours that over the last yr is slowly getting a bit worse on my left side which makes me think i have another stone but the pain is nothing compared to how bad it got.

as a nurse myself, i know i dont drink enough water particularly on 12hr shifts and this is most likely the cause.

btw prior to passing my kidney, i was on a detox for a week drinking 3-4litres a day which probably 'flushed' it out! good luck!

I also have this problem of frequent pain near the kidneys when lying in bed in the morning, which disappears shortly after getting out of bed, and I think in my circumstances, it is caused by trapped wind, (gas), or a build up of wind, probably in the small intestine. The reason I specify the small intestine is because I have had my colon removed, and my small intestine is connected directly to my sphincter muscle, so in my case, any build up of wind can only be in the small intestine. When reading many of the previous posts on here, a lot of them could relate to excessive wind, or indigestion problems causing excessive wind, and I have found that if I take steps to reduce the wind, it lessens, or comletely eliminates the pain.

I'm willing to bet non of you had been bed wetters when you were younger. :)

Your getting this pain cause you have to pee. I've tried several times holding it well past the point of sanity (as a test), and I get the same pain.

If I drink lots of soda before bed I'll get this pain in the kidneys that goes away when I pee. I would suggest drinking less before bed, particularly alcohol or caffeine drinks. as they cause increased urine production.

If it still doesn't go away have your doctor take a look.

Im 28. I've been dealing with this discomfort since about 18 years old... It seems in the past few years it gradually became more consistent.. Now, I have extreme pain pretty much every night:( I've long wondered what the heck it is! I've done tons of research on the internal organs and functions, things of that nature.. I've since realized the area of pain is my kidneys... It's primarily my left side however, from time to time they both hurt. I too have been to the doctor only to discover it's apparently nothing!! Well it's obviously something extreme to me, and from what I can see to many others as well! Tossing and turning trying to get comfortable. Breathing brings extreme direct pain. It seems to set in after only a couple hours of lying down... Loss of sleep~ It'll reck ya! I have also realized after sitting up for a short time (strangely) relieves the pain.. So like many others here, I from time to time considered it to be a muscle pain or something simple like that.. I've only ever had a UTI a few times in my life, so I have to wonder if it has anything to do with that specifically.. Like I said, I've done research from time to time through out the past few years, also searching for anyone else experiencing the same symptoms.... I have to say I feel a little relieved! :-) I hate to hear anyone going through this pain and frustration however, it's enlightening to read all sorts of remedies that seem to work for some!! It's also strangely comforting to know I'm not the only one dealing w/ this.... As this is what I've always thought~ Until now, I'd not heard of anyone else experiencing these symptoms.... I'm certainly going to be trying these sorts of remedy trials.. Thanks a million to you all <3 ~ Amie Lee

SAME HERE. i HAVE HAD THIS PAIN IN BOTH SIDES FOR A FEW YEARS. ONLY WHEN I LAY DOWN FOR A PERIOD OF TIME. THE PAIN IS SO BAD WHEN I WAKE UP I CAN'T MOVE MY LEGS, ROLLOVER, OR BREATHE. HOWEVER, WHEN I GET UP AT 3AM TO USE THE RESTROOM I DON'T NOTICE IT. ALL MY TESTS ARE NORMAL. BUT MY PAIN IS SEVERE AND DAILY! AND SOME TIMES IT CONTINUES THROUGH OUT THE DAY. BUT USUALLY THE PAIN SUBSIDES WITHIN A COUPLE OF HOURS. I WAS TOD BY MY NEUROLOGIST THAT IS WAS MY NEUROPATHY. I DON'T KNOW THAT I AGREE, CUZ IT DOESN'T FEEL LIKE NERVES OR MUSCLES. I HAVE HAD KIDNEY STONES, THAT WAS 14 YRS AGO. PAIN IS NOT THE SAME BUT SAME AREA. THIS PAIN FEELS LIKE MY KIDNEYS ARE EITHER BEING CRUSHED OR DISSOLVING IN ACID. I HAVE YET TO FIND A DR. TO CARE OR EVEN LISTEN TO ME. H E L P !

Thankgod I am not going mad !!
This is the 3rd time I have had this pain now, at the moment I am at the end of 7 days of constant agony which like everyone else wakes me in the night and is agony for about 2 hours after waking etc.......
I have back problems anyway and the Doc is also saying it is muscles, I had a Diclofenac injection a few days ago and the pain did go for 24hrs, but it doesn't feel like muscle pain and feels like it is behind the muscle. The pain is hard to describe, like the feeling you get when your tummy flips but 100 times more intense is the best I can do.......only on the right side which is my sleeping side.
I have to strap a hot water bottle to my back for a couple of hours in a morning and today I have resorted to taking some Tramadol but so far no difference. I am also constipated which is very, very unusual for me........
I am going to go to the Docs today and will sit there until they do something !!

I have the pain in the AM when I don't drink too many fluids the night before. After I've arisen and drank, the pain goes away. I've had a kidney stone before, with similar pain, but not as intense. I figure that it's some kind of start of stone formation in the kidney. At night, the fluids are diluted and concentrated in the kidney due to lack of fluid intake, and the mini granual stones irritate the kidney. When one rises and drinks, the minute particles don't cause much trouble. That's my theory. I stll live with it. And I'm sure those minute particles would not show-up on scans or most other testing. Likely, down the road, I, and we all here will have another stone.

did anybody find out what this condition was? I have also had it since i was very young, maybe 9 or 10 and now I am 35. I still get it. usually when I sleep for longer than usual OR when I eat very rich food i also get it worse (like at Christmas) but when i stand up in the mornings it disappears. Sometimes I have to get up early just because of the pain. I'd love to know what the cause is? I also suffer from a lot of UTIs so it could be kidney related...

I used to get this the morning after I took protein powder. Then I noticed that some other protein powders have bromelain, which helps digest protein. So I added some bromelain to my protein powder and it prevented the morning kidney pain.
