I think this is an evil little tool.  I have had it in almost one year and have had a miserable experience.  I have asked to have it taken out and my doctor keeps telling me to hold out.  I have periods that last 2-3 weeks with spotting then heavy bleeding then spotting.  I can't go without a pad at all, it's ridiculous.  It helped my issue with blood clots at first but now they are back with a vengence.  I have cramping all the time and am just ready to scream.  I have had my doctor tell me that it doesn't cause any other side effects and that's a load of c**p. I have had horrible acne every since it was put in, sweet cravings that never existed before, and for about three months after insertion my sex drive went through the roof.  To the point that my husband was like "really you want it again." That unfortunately went away, it made our marriage very interesting for a while.  However we weren't able to enjoy my need much because I was always spotting.  I would never recommend this to anyone.  I tried to talk my friend out of it and she did it anyway, she had it out four weeks after getting it in.  She couldn't stand the discomfort, acne, and the increases sex drive.  She also got horrible migraines from it.

This forum is such a relief. I've never had a child and am 18. I had mirena inserted july 9th 2011 and today is august 4th. At first I barely spotted for about a week and the pain of insertion was sooo much less than when I had Paragard last year (made my periods unbearably bloody and painful then fell out after 6 months during a particularly strong period), but then I started my period and it has not stopped. When I check the strings my cervix seems swollen and I get large strands of what I can only guess to be uterine lining? I was scared sh*tless for a bit. My sex drive is gone but I think thats mostly due to the sharp lower abdomen pain, constant urge to cry, as well as the constant flow of blood from my crotch. I really hope you guys are right about things evening out after 3 months. Im so sick of BC not working for me :( However I am determined to stick it out. My periods use to be so much worse so even though it has yet to end, it is so much lighter. I think sex is making it worse though which sucks because I'll wake up feeling great and not bleeding but I'll have sex an start right back up again and with cramps. Anyone get checked out for similar problems?

Which is helping so much I berely have cramps and my period is like 4-5 days normally and its light but recently my period has decieded it doesn't want to go away and its been like 2weeks since it started but its super light so I'm like what do I do. i had my iud put in a month ago and had horrible cramps for about a week after, and then a week later i started my period, and today is two full weeks of being on my period straight, longest period i have ever had in my life which im pretty confused considering that my doctor told me it would shorten and eventually stop my period and now its just made it a hassle and a worry, im thankful though to find out im not alone in this and that there is hope itll get better as my bodyy gets used to it, thank you t w

I am currently having simaliar side effects. I had my IUD put in on June 30th of this year, 1st period afterwards lasted for 13 days, 2nd lasted 17 days and I got my 3rd period on Sept 25 and still have it right now!! I thought two days ago it had finally ended but apparently not. Started bleeding again this afternoon. :( My husband thinks i should talk to my doctor but I wanted to give it a bit longer as I have read that periods can or will be irregular at first, for at least the first few 3-6  months. If it doesn't stop getting longer and longer each month I'm gonna have to have it removed and go back on the pill which I don't really wanna do cause I'm sometimes forgetful with taking them. So I was just wondering if this has happened to anyone before as well??

I've had my iud for about 4 months now, and maybe I've not waited long enough for my body to adjust, but I've had non stop bleeding. I've maybe had 3-4 weeks after the insertion that I have not bled. It not painful or heavy but it's consistent. Everyday for weeks! Is this normal?...

Well apparently I am the only fool sticking it out! I have had the mirena for 4 years! First 2 and a half years were great! Very few periods which were light and nearly painless and last fewer days. Now I am miserable. I have had 4 kids in 7 years and as a child had horrible periods. Now the pain isn't too bad, much worse than last year granted, but they last forever. For the past 3 months I have bleed 79 days! Ugh! I am so over this thing. What started out a dream has turned into a nightmare! I forget the pill (did I mention I have 4 kids) and I HATE shots, so what else is there to take? Other side effects: weight gain, extreme weakness, exhaustion, bloating, pain on left side only, brain fog, and tender breasts. Had it put in because was about to lose insurance. Just now have finally got insurance again so may have it taken out. I was sooooooo wanting it to work!!!!!

All these post are old and I wish people dont only rant but come back to give an update. Was it hell forever? Any one reached a 3-6 month time lapse after the insertiion? I am starting to get seriously fed up of all the damn bleeding. I was told my periods would get lighter and instead i am a sexless bleeding psychopath.

I feel the same way! Had mirena for 3 years and the first 2 1/2 were great! Everything I wanted to be. But now, I've bled for 4 months! And mood swings started very suddenly! When I go to one emotional extreme, I get a horrible headache afterwards!! I have an appointment to take it out next week.

The spotting at first was nothing I couldn't deal with. The little I spotted for a couple of days in a month was fine too. Better than a flow I thought! But a year and a half later and I still spot a little almost every time after sex with my guy then it is gone. This is a problem cuz I like sex with him plenty! And then now for the past month I have maybe gone 5 days without bleeding any and it has been heavy this time, and my face has broken out! I have hoped it will go away but I am worried something is wrong and am calling my doctor when they open today. I hope she can fix me!

Is it abnormal to have my period so long while being on the IUD? It's been about 14 days. Last month I was on my period for three weeks. I find it crucially annoying that I wear a pad most of the time since I am ALWAYS on my period for ages! Maybe 1-2 weeks out of the time I am not wearing a pad. Not to mention the cramps are deathly... I seriously feel like i'm going to die because my mentstrual cycle decides to torcher me before it starts.
