That has been my biggest fear in all of this. I am super active, running each morning, and weight lifting in the afternoons. We backpack usually all summer long, and the more and more I am hearing and reading, it really seems as though I would have to chalk this summer up to waste in order to heal. (I'm also nervous of muscle loss/weight gain.) One last question, how long was it before you were able to drive? I have a non stick shift sedan, and I've been cleared to work from home for 2 weeks, but do have to return to the office after that timeline, and while the Dr. told me after 2 weeks I can drive (because presumably I'd be out of the boots) I'm also reading that it can be as long as 2 months! What was your personal experience?

Again, thank you so much for taking the time to respond, I have been a nervous wreck and this helps so much to be able to question someone who had the same thing done.

Hi Daniel. I had my surgery 10 days ago, and I have my stitches out on Thursday this week. I had one toe on both feet done. I was really really nervous for nothing, the surgery was a breeze, and I seem to be healing really fast. I have no doubt once my stitches are out I'll be back in the weight room that day, and probably running within another 2 weeks. Hardly any swelling. I am hardly in any pain. I can only tell you what worked for me as far as healing maybe something will help you: 1. I am young, younger people heal faster. 2. Not overweight. 3. I kept the feet completed elevated and iced the first 6 days like they told me to. 4. Keep your diet super clean, focus on vegetables, fruits, nuts and some lean proteins. Avoid dairy, excess of processed carbs, and alcohol. All cause inflammation to some extent. 5. if you smoke tobacco, really try not to during recovery. Slows down the healing process.

This sounds pretty silly, but the more mentally healthy you can keep yourself, and positive thinking you can do, there is a mind/body connection and it does help. It's very isolating to be home all the time and feel like you can't walk. Trying to keep yourself focused on what you will do when you're healed, getting back to work, hitting the gym, riding bikes, whatever it is, will create a positive vision for your mind and body to focus on. I feel super silly for how much I worried prior to the surgery. Good luck, hope your recovery goes smoothly!

Hello.
The 6 days you say that you kept your feet elevated and iced, you didnt walk at all?, ... after that 6 days, you start walking again?. And how about driving, im mean... my car is automatic, and i can not take a lot of time off work and i need to drive, how much did you need?
What would you recommed, having surgery both feet at the same time, or one first and then the other one?.
I hope you answer my questions.... i want to that that surgery one toe in both feet.
Thank you.

Looks like it's been a while since you had surgery. I'm set to have surgery next week and would like to hear about your experience. I'm having bunion surgery, surgery on 2 toes for hammertoes as well as 2 toes diagnosed as curled 5th toe. I wasn't too worried about pain after surgery until I read some posts here. Thanks!

I know this thread was over a year ago, but thought I'd post anyway. I worked for and then married a podiatrist. He said nobody should be wearing heels at all in their lifetime because it puts our feet into an unnatural position. I've not been able to wear heels for years due to a wide variety of issues with the toes on my right foot. The act putting a foot in heels makes it hurt right away. I didn't start to get a hammer toe until about 6-7 yrs ago and when it started it was very painful.. It's on my 2nd toe of my right foot. I had surgery on my big toe of that same foot years ago as I had no range of motion in that toe. And the 3rd has been deformed since birth. It curls under and for most of my life I just didn't like the way it looked, but now it's to the point where it curls all the way under the 2nd toe and I have an ingrown nail on that foot. Anyway, I've been putting it off (having the hammer toe surgery), but it's time to get it over with. I'm no longer married to the podiatrist, but I see one where I live now and he said I wouldn't be able to drive for 6 weeks.

I had surgery on four toes two weeks ago. It hurt like normal surgery pain does but the last three days two of the toes art just burning. I feel like I am on fire. Doesn't look infected. Could it be nerve related. Help!

I was very upset to see my toe sticking up after having hammer toe surgery on 4 toes. It's 5 months and Dr said to come see him in November 2015. I hope something can be can be done about this. I had the surgry so I would not have to use anything to flatten my toes down they are not to comfy and I tried 4 of different things.

I had a sliver bunionectomy done on my big toe with a revision of arthroplasty for 4th and 5th toes all on same foot. Must say, the biggest pain in the butt has been shoe wear after. I am 7 weeks postop. I went back to work after 4 weeks, on feet all day. The issue has been my 4th and 5th toe scars. Very sensitive. I do put on a special compounded gel from podiatrist for discomfort. I bought a part of shoes to wear to work, the widest ones I could find. I am happy with results, but can't wait till this is all healed.

How did you do? I had my left foot done December 2014. Then I wore 3 different casts, aftr a month I had a walking boot. It is now 8 months later and my toes are still swollen and I limp. I wish I would have not done it! Any others have this. I'm thinking of going back to the surgeon, but why? As I would NEVER repeat this hell! But I should probably go back after 8 months just to check on it???? I saw my doc till about 4 months, then he said it would be awhile before my foot felt normal. Well, it doesn't! Lol. Just venting.
