Hello, here's my experience, male 47. Mallet toes (both nr 2) on both feet were corrected using so called smart toes - tytan/nikel implants, no Kirshner wire were sticking out from a wound. There was no single sting of pain during surgery and over the 6 weeks of recovery. The only nuisance were these awkward post operative sandals that had to be worn 6 weeks (non-negotiable). Nevertheless, I was walking a few hours during the day in the day 4 or 5, driving a car in the day 10 (small distances but still). The whole thing was much less of a pain that I feared, the result is pretty good, toes look good since are straight (at last!). No swelling, no pain, nothing. Try to google out these implants, higly recommend this route Vs K-wire (Kirshner). Good luck with your toe projects!

I had this surgery las Thursday and the pain has not eased up at all. While elevated its tolerable but once I put my foot down to try and stand the pressure and pain rushes to my foot and I have to stand still until the pain eased up enough for me to move. I have a follow up appointment on Friday and hopefully the doctor will give me something other than oxycodone that will relieve the pain.

I had hammertoe surgery on my right foot last week. I am soooo glad I did after all the negative remarks I read on the internet. It has been 8 days now and I am driving and walking with a boot. The recovery was not painful at all. I was prescribed pain med. however I did not use one pill. The dr. plans on removing stitches in two weeks. There is swelling but that is to be expected. Looking forward to a more active life after this surgery. Good Luck!

How long after your hammertoe surgery were you able to walk 1-2 miles each day, if you were to do that?

I had the surgery on both feet. One was very successful but the other has left me with unhealed nerves in my toe . Once that 2nd joint is removed your toe can no longer flex in that area. The bone fuses , so you may not be able a to wear any sort of heel at all. It depends upon the status of your foot , toe and how it feels. Any job that requires a woman to wear heels of any kind , or shoes of any particular kind is totally wrong and sexist. When people have bad feet you have to take care of them. You try to find decent looking shoes but it is just ridiculous to think that your job depends on the shoes you wear. You need to consult your boss about this. You could be exposed to discrimination and have a right to speak up for yourself.

Hi there,
I have had Hammertoe surgery 6 weeks ago, I have had the pins and stitches removed but I am still in alot of pain, I am still wearing the Post Op comfy shoe they supplied and the thought of wearing anything else seems to be a long way down the line. I am not sure I would of gone ahead with surgery if I knew it was going to be this painful.and a long time for recovery.

I'm in my late 20's and had shortening of the toe done on toe 4 and 5 back on March 4th making it exactly 4 months ago. Stitches were removed about a week after and toe 4 split back open taking it much longer to heal. I was taking pain meds for Atleast 3 months. The swelling was constant. Ice, elevating, steroids and anti-inflammatory meds didn't seem to help. Due to the long periods of swelling my skin began to stretch and peel. It wasn't until after 3 months I could put my foot flat on the ground BUT couldn't bear weight with it flat. Doc ordered me to PT twice a week which I am still doing. My foot and ankle became swollen again yesterday and became painful and uncomfortable. This morning it went away but my skin was wrinkly and shriveled up. I did have a nerve block in my ankle at time of surgery wondering if that's what's causing these complications. Anyone have suggestions??

Hi!
I'm a 24 year old female who had hammer toe surgery on 4th toe left foot and 5th toe right foot 4 weeks ago.
The surgery was fine, I only had local anesthetic so was awake. Felt a bit of pushing and pulling but that was it. The numbing needles however were very painful! After surgery I was given two special shoes that were pretty unattractive. I went home and didn't feel anything at all for around 4 hours. Then the pain started. Horrible throbbing and burning and my toes kept twitching which was horrendous. Also I had to crawl to the toilet because my toes were in agony whenever I tried to walk!
After around 4/5 days I was able to walk a bit with crutches but was still very painful. In the second week I was walking about much better with very little pain unless I knocked it.
Just had stitches removed and toes are healing really nicely. Getting the pins removed in a week.
