i've had it since i was 16yo. I'm 27 now :p

I have gone from everything as well too, but i've been trying a lot that has helped me lately.

ONE: I tend to go with Coal Tar shampoos (Denorex) and that helps me A LOT but I noticed it's usually best to use it every other day as opposed to every day.

TWO: Purology make this vegan shampoo that is great! I tried the one for dandruff but it didn't do much for me. Actually, going with the original one did the best.

THREE: if you google "champori" there is a website to a topical ointment. i've tried sooooo many and seemed so skeptical but this actually did work for me. within a week i noticed a big difference. Only thing is that you have to apply it 4 times a day, but well worth it. (the spray and cream work best together)

FOUR: I've been drinking a lot of coconut milk, that helps a lot with the skin :)

My dermatologist told me several months ago that I have seborrheic dermatitis. I have had somewhat severe outbreaks since I was 18 or 19 that I can remember. I'm 24 now so I haven't really had this problem for that long. I'm not really sure if the doctor diagnosed me correctly because I get sores that sometimes come to a head like pimples. Sometimes they just ooze and scab over. I don't get that many at a time but they seem to occur at random spots on my head. Sometimes they are near my hairline, on the top of my head, or on the sides of my head. Sometimes my head itches but I don't get that much flaking. The doctor prescribed generic loprox shampoo and doxycycline 100 mg twice daily for a month when I came in because it was bad at the time. He told me to use the shampoo every other day and use head and shoulders on the other days. He said if it came back to still use the shampoo and to take the doxycycline for 2 weeks. I think because I moved from CO to OH (which is much more humid) that the bumps or sores occurred more often. I also think it gets worse when I stress out. My mom has the same problem but she always thought they were hives. She seemed to think that shampoo could have caused them. Anyway, I have had to do the antibiotic treatment several times. Recently I took it for a few days and stopped because the sores cleared up. Right now I'm not having any problems. When I was breaking out, I tended to touch my head to find where the sores were located. I think that the oils in my fingers might have caused the sores to spread. I have an oily scalp so that might be a culprit, too. I'm thinking about finding a new doctor at some point to find out what this really is because it makes me feel disgusting. I just wish that I could figure this out...

This may sound crazy but believe me it is not because i have done it. Go online and get a natural acne treatment called teenage dream. It has jojoba oil which is renowned for being a remedy for sd and other stuff like tea tree oil and lavender. Well apply this and under no circumstances wash it off. It is vital you let it soak in and do it's job. Probably best to do this in the evening or at night when you will be going to sleep. Would not recommend doing this and then going to a pub/club. Wash it off the next morning. Do this every consecutive evening/night and I bet you see a big difference in say a couple of
weeks. I did and i now just apply this once a week to maintain my current staus quo (no sd). Go for it!

I also have SD, I have colored my hair for years. I did not do it as usual this past month and I am suffering with the itch! I use a permanent color. I swear it really keeps it away....I will NEVER wait again...'
I use Tea Tree Organic Shampoo, there are several, so make sure your shampoo is a good one...
The itch seems to subside after I color it, I use non-alcohol mousse, and Reg. hairspray...do NOT wait as I did after you color it this time.

my daughter had the same thing when she was younger. I went form dermatologist to dermatologist. And tried treatment after treatment and nothing seemed to really work. Until my Pastor suggested that I not put any oil on my daughter's hair and braid it.

Seborrheic Dermatitis is so stressful I know have suffered with it. What Ive found is that it always happens when Im stressed which is most of the time (joke) Seriously it has been shown that are emotions play a large part with our skin, so working from the mind aspect and calming the mind be it relaxation, meditation, tai chi or yoga will help, and try not to focus on your problem (I know not always easy). Use whatever medication shamppos help but your mind is a powerful tool so get to work on using that too.

hi, i have s.b. on my scalp also, i use Zincplex shampoo and conditioner, you must leave it on 5 min. but its helped me a lot, and i have went and gotten my hair dyed, never again, they leave it on for like 55min and by the time it was done i had blisters all over my head. and if you have a water softener , well its like putting salt in a wound. so before i dye my hair i make sure i have no sores on my scalp, and then and only then i dye my hair at home. leave it on like 35 min. and i don't get the blisters and sores. i really think that shampoo helps, but the secret is leave it on 5 min. good luck

I've had this condition for 30 years. The only thing I've found that actually removes the scales is to apply salycilic acid gel or even shampoo to each spot, then let it soak there for at least 8 hours. This is where it gets rough, but it's the only thing that works for me. After 8 hours or so, the scales are softened by the acid, and I literally scrape them off my head with either a comb or my fingernails. Sounds gross, I know. But afterward those goddamn scales are gone, and my head feels normal for a little while until they come back.

Hello there,

I have been going though this seborrheic dermatitis ( scalp, T on forhead, around mouth, middle chest and around ears ) for more than twenty two years. Based on my experience,  I can tell firmly that this condition cannot be cured permanently. Now that sounds very disapppointing I know, but it is a fact that cannot be denied, unless somebody has found a miracle drug in 2012, of  which I am not aware of.  Most of the symptoms mentioned are familiar to me and I have been trying almost every medicine availabe in the market.

You can only control this disease by regular( emphasized again) cleaning of affected areas. If the scales on scalp are big and itchy, the one should get consultaion and medication from a dermatologist immediately. The doctor should prescribe you some specific shampoo ( say Nizoral )  for treating chronic dandruff and scales on the head. The longer you take to start consulting a doctor, the more the chances for losing hair and spreading the inflammation. Let the expert find what is best for you.

Your case may be different from the condition that I have. But scaling and dandruff is a commom issue as fas as I understood. Once the excessive scaling is brought under control ( inflammation and scales gone, skin almost normal to look and feel except for the regular dandruff "powder like" flakes), you can use an anti-dandruff shampoo like Head and Shoulders regularly, which will keep your scalp perfectly clean and normal looking for a day. The important thing is to wash the hair on a regular basis so that it remains clean.

You might wonder why I emphasize the word "regular" many times. It is because, the moment you stop your cleaning and medication routine if any, the symptoms starts to reappear. If you have only the issue of dandruff, then you are a lucky person.  The other not so fortunate people will have to use some cortesone creams ( betamethasone dipropionate/Clobetasol Propionate in a salicylic acid or cream base ) regulary on affected areas ( face ..etc ) to keep the inflammation under control.  Whatever may be the condition, it is important that a dermatologist is consulted before trying any medication. Because what looks like dandruff can be some other skin disease ( yes .. we have more diseases like this ) and medication may vary.

NB: The capital letters were only used to emphasize the points and request not to be taken as shouting or rude. :)

I have it also but stress will make it more inflammed. I'm using cream that my dermatologist prescribed. I found from doing research online some natural oils will help."For example Neem oil, Cedarwood oil, Patchouli oil, Lavender oil, Rosemary oil, Oregano oil, Peppermint oil, and Eucalyptus oil all have proven properties that can quickly relieve Seborrheic Dermatitis symptoms. In fact Oregano oil is one of the most powerful antifungals (kills yeast) available - and it's all natural with no side effects." I got this information from this site

Scrubbing SD skin with skin-friendly Epsom Salts will stop the condition, ...for as long as the Epsom Salts permeate the skin. I realize that hair becomes stiff with Epsom Salts on it, so I use Alcohol instead and that seems effective for a day at a time.
