Shortness of breath after stopping smoking

Can anybody tell me if shortness of breath after stopping smoking is normal? I am 32 years old, male, smoked 8-9 cigarettes a day for about 15 years. I stopped smoking three weeks ago. I have never been short of breath in my life, however since I stopped smoking, I find myself out of breath, at strange times, even when sitting at rest. Is this just part of stopping smoking?
It seems to be very difficult to find information on the side effects of stopping smoking!
Thanks,
Richard.

That's exactly what I experienced....hang in there!
I started to feel better after 12 months so give it time. Don't ever go back because you don't want to go through this again. I really think that people who start up after quitting for awhile never experienced a tough quit like us. I remember loosing breath speaking as well. I really think it's mostly anxiety related. I don't know why anxiety happens when it was never present while being a smoker? I still have anxiety a few days a week and I'm 17 months in now. I can you tell you it gets better and just go with the flow.

You won't find a better site on this subject. I have search all over in the 17 months since I stopped.
Today makes 17 months for me, no let up in sight, its the 21st of november 2014 some days I can almost breath but most days are breathless a while back I was breathing pretty good just had no endurance when it comes to working, and thats when you really need to breath, a few mins of work and 5 mins trying to catch my breath, its awful. but I knew better than to start smoking so I have no one to blame but me. Keith and Angel I hope you are breathing good again and able to endure some work and play without running out of air, and I wish the best to everyone THANKS RALPH
Better days will come. I am doing well so far. I have not any sob issues in a while. I thank God that quit when I did and did not wait until it was to late. Keith
We dont know how long it will take to get back to normal, its different for each person. could take a few days or weeks or months, its different for each of us, hang in there it will go away some day.
Today is my 520th day, its getting a little better now ,but a ways to go before its normal, but i will take what it gives me, I was stupid to smoke for 47 years and then stop. But who knows, i"m just thankful that I have a little more time left to enjoy, I may not be normal but I"m not dead. so thanks for that, GOOD LUCK TO ALL YOU SWELL FOLKS AND I HOPE YOUR THANKFUL FOR BEING HERE, THANKS RALPH

I quit smoking a little over a month ago on my 63rd birthday. I smoked since I was 16. I am glad to read these answers about the feeling of needing to yawn & not being able to get the deep breath. I am experiencing the same feelings and a lot of anxiety. Hopefully this too shall pass or I am about to lose my mind.
I though the first 3 months was the hardest. Good luck. Keith
