Shortness of breath after stopping smoking

Can anybody tell me if shortness of breath after stopping smoking is normal? I am 32 years old, male, smoked 8-9 cigarettes a day for about 15 years. I stopped smoking three weeks ago. I have never been short of breath in my life, however since I stopped smoking, I find myself out of breath, at strange times, even when sitting at rest. Is this just part of stopping smoking? It seems to be very difficult to find information on the side effects of stopping smoking! Thanks, Richard.

Goodmorning everyone . well I just read on google health that E-Cigs are 10 times more carcinogenic than regular cigs, so to you people who think that E-cigs are a lot safer than regular cigs you have been fooled by the makers of E-cigs, get off of that cancer stick, and all the other feel good meds, and wait for research on stuff before you go putting that final nail in your coffin, ITS THE 1ST OF DECEMBER 2014 , THANKS RALPH
Electronic cigarettes contain up to 10 times more cancer-causing substances than regular tobacco, according to the latest study by Japanese scientists. A team of researchers from the Japanese Health Ministry examined the vapor, finding carcinogens like formaldehyde and acetaldehyde. The former was found in quantities exceeding traditional cigarettes by 10 times. THANKS RALPH 11/01/14
Wow. you need to get off of those. I would think that the SOB is more from the anxiety of quitting. Nicotine can cause some serious side affects.
I quit smoking last Saturday and went cold turkey, today is only Wednesday and every since I quit my breathing has become unbearable, I cant even hardly walk to the bathroom without being totally out of breath. I also found out that its hard to hold my bladder when im that short of breath, do you think this will pass? im totally miserable
How long have you smoked.... It will pass it just takes time..... I believe it has a lot to do with anxiety and going cold turkey.  Its a total shock to your body.  Your body is trying to adjust.  Someone wrote on this blog that "Your so use to breathing deeply with every puff that you took and now your breathing more shallow and your feeling a lack of air".. We all know how your feeling... its very scary feeling like your being smothered or not being able to breath....  I have goine to the doctors numerous times with the complaint of not being able to breath... I had chest xrays recently and they came back normal. 2 Spridomtry tests and both were normal..  The only thing that is not norm. is my pulse ox it runs between 92 and 95. Just keep holding on... it takes time.... Also, I found that exersice does help because you tend to breath more deeply.........  Joe
Today is 530 days of my quiting, its the 3rd of December 2014, my breathing is not much better, but a little better,I think once I get complety off of these zanax and symbicort that my breathing will inprove much more. always check a drugs side effects before taking them, and read any readers comments also, thats where you find the truth. and to the person that has a very hard time going to the bathroom , I had the same problem for a long time , lost 50 lbs, from not eating, because it was so hard to go to the bathroom and wipe youself, it was breathtaking, get you some type of enhaler to assist you, it makes it a little easier. THANKS RALPH
thank you for your reply, as for how long I have been smoking its been over 40 years, I started when I was in the service and uncle sam gave them to us in out c-rations while in viet nam. I really do hope it will pass, I do know anxiety does have something to do with it, as for exercise its hard to even move around without getting totally out of breath, and your right it does feel like someone is smothering me. its even hard to eat without getting out of breath. the veterans administration is suppose to be sending me some patches to help with my quitting smoking, I just hope it works, I really do want to quit smoking, but I want to be able to breath to, thanks again, Dale from illinois
To tiredofsmoking I had exactly the same as you, I am 70 years old smoked for 47 years spent 5 yrs and 1 month in the airforce, started smoking in the airforce, I never used the V A for anything they know even less than these civ, doc, know, and it was very hard for me to eat also without running out of air. get you an OXIMETER FROM E-BAY. and it will always tell you your oxygen level, they are cheap 15 dollars they slide on and off the end of your finger it uses 2 aaa battery very portable, it will set your mindf at ease, good luck. THANKS RALPH
thank you for replying to my message, I will look into getting one of those OXIMETERS. the va is suppose to be sending some of those patches that are suppose to help me quit, I was also told that anxiety has a lot to do with it. but I don't know about that. I did forget to mention in my original message that I do have copd. so quitting is not an option. thanks-- DALE
i am glad i came here. i had the same SOB and CT just after 5 days of quitting. and i already feel slightly better. i was planning to go back to the gym to flush all the toxins out. but that seems to be a big problem. i can't do cardio for more than 5 mins with this SOB. i could do cardio before quitting for 40 mins easily. its the same lungs, and the same part of the lung which was getting oxygen before (the rest covered by tar and mucus) should still be there. and slowly other parts of the lungs should get available for the getting oxygen. having said all that, is it psychological or physical. if its psychological, should i keep pushing myself on cardio to the previous levels. i dont want to pass out if its physical.. :) one last question, the mucus is coming out of our mouth and nose. will the tar take the downward route? just asking cause i might again freak out and start researching.
Ralph...I truly hope you begin to feel as better as Keith and I do...you have gone through so much.... :-( I think about you often...
