Greetings,
I was reading everyone response and just wanted to write and share. I too began having intense pain that ranalong side my throat. First on one side than later on the other. It got to the point that it ran up to my ears and into my jaw. Thankfully the intense pain only lasted a few days and is now only an ache that causes me discomfort. When it was flared up I could find no relief bending my neck, laying on a pillow, turning my head, swallowing, you name it, it hurt very badly.
I must also mention that I have been plagued for many years with widespread chronic pain and fatigue. I had been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Anyways I went to the doctor after having this intense pain and she ordered an ultra sound of my thyroid. A few days later I was called and told they had found a couple of spots and I now have an appointment with an ear, nose and throat doc.
I would never had geussed it could have anything to do with my thyroid because every time they have done blood work on my thyroid it comes out normal, but the blood work could not find the spots so perhaps asking for an ultra sound may benefit you. I hope you all find the relief you are looking for and I pray that maybe a pill is all I may have needed all this time.

Thanks for the info........I also have fibro and this pain is making me crazy.

Im baffled though, why wouldn't they be sending you to an endrocronologist......they are the specialists for Thyroid.

same as most , left side 1" below jawline next to adams apple. when i locate the pain with my finger i feel my heart beat. i believe the pain is deeper than my aterie (not sure if an aterie can cause pain). The spot that causes pain is maby .25" wide and .5" long. First felt like a sore glan assoc. with when i get a cold. after 2 days i notices i didnt feel bad as i expected. I noticed the pain wasnt quite the same as glan pain. i believe it a tendon because i place my finger on the spot and rotate my head back and forst and the pain fluxuates with my motion. I first noticed the pain was different than a swollen glan when i tried to sing certain series of notes and just the beginning of the 2nd half of a swallow.(if that makes sence) sort of like a sore throat but not!
My stress level has increaced just recently and i was laying in bed and slepping alot more than usual right before it started. if i rub the aera for a few seconds it feel like a sore muscle and all pain is relieved for about a min. max then returns. If it remains ill get it checked and post results.

I have very similar neck pain. On my left side under my jaw. It hurts alot after talking for any length of time. I went to the dr and my blood work came back normal, been talking Amoxillican and that isn't working. I had a Cat Scan today, we'll see what they find... probably nothing. I'm worried at reading all these posts that this pain may never go away! I do feel overly tired and my chest feels heavy. I'm going back to the Dr tomorrow....

TMJ! I have also had all these symptoms with the pain in the left side of the throat and neck. I also get sinus infections on the left side of my face. My pain started about 4 months ago after I had a root canal...you guessed it, on the left side. I suffer with depression and major anxiety as a mom of 3. It has been so difficult to explain this problem to Dr.s because you have to push really hard in a specific spot under my jaw to feel the pain. My neck aches on and off and occasionally I get ear aches and headaches. I have been to 3 ENT Dr.s and the 1st thought I had an infection and gave me Augmentin, which did nothing. The 2nd Dr. said I had TMJ, which I thought was wrong, so I saw a 3rd EN&T Dr. and he was positive it is TMJ. You can imaging my relief, I seriously thought I had some rare cancer at 29 yrs. old. I was losing my mind. And by the way anxiety makes TMJ worse. He suggested a mouth guard at night and IBprofen, but I don't like to take medicine, so I'm looking into natural anti inflammatories. So I'm not saying that everyone has TMJ but its worth looking into. My jaw really shifts when I open and shut wide, so I believe my diagnosis is correct. I even went to a dentist who did a whole panaramic x-ray to make sure there wasn't any infection or lump that could be a real scare. Like I said I was paranoid!! I hope this is helpful for someone else. I'm just grateful I had good insurance to finally get some peace of mind.

im another one :-( Antibiotics seem to clear it but not for long its weird its the left side on my neck a really confined sore spot and really sore when pressure is aplied and when i turn my neck, stuoid localized deep pain that really hurts all the time, i have had a lot of trouble with my sinuses in the past and although antibiotics didnt work for very long i now have a nasal sinus spray that helps keep the pain at bay i barely notice it now :-D

I have had a pain in the left side of my neck, deep in my neck . It hurts really bad to swallow as if I am pinching on something. I can't eat because I am scared of the pain. It started last night like a pop. I have had it in the past and when I felt the pop I would swallow really fast and it would go away as quick as it came. I didn't catch it fast enough this time and now it will not go away. I tried putting a warm cloth on my neck hoping to relax it. I've tried messaging the spot...no luck. I tried moving the thing in front of my neck around...which hurt in doing so...still no luck. I though it could be a muscle spasm or something but I just don't know. The only way I can describe it is that if you think of a bendy straw and when you put a dent in the bendy part of the straw doesn't flex as easy. That is sort of the way I feel my neck is doing. Moving my jaw to talk aggravates it. About five years ago this happened to me and it lasted for several hours one night. My throat was so dry because I would not swallow my salava. It just hurt too bad. My mother gave me some liquid pain reliever and it coated my dry throat almost suffocating me. I almost passed out. I started to panic and dry heave. From doing so the thing...pain in my neck that was hurting stopped. I don't know if it was from the way I was sending the panic vibrations from trying to breath so hard or what. But like i said it has been off and on for years since I was a child. I seriously doubt it is cancer or anything of that nature. I really believe it could be some sort of muscle spasm or pinched nerve. I just hope it goes away soon. I start my job next monday and I need to talk without being in serious pain. I forgot to mentiont that the pain is not on the inside of the throat just a pain on the left outside of the neck. I think I might try to take a pain pill and hope that it relaxes me enough to relax my neck.

I have now read every thread for the past 2 1/2 yrs. since Motormarrow posted his excellent description on 1-15-07. Appox. 90 % of us all seem to have the same symptoms yet in over 2 1/2 yrs. no one except the 2 TMJ people have found any solution. Let's examine this as if we were CSI people on prime time:

1) Almost everyone has this on the left side besides just a few that experience this on the right side.

2) Practically no one feels a lump just a rather deep soreness to the side of the neck, not in the throat, that is unexplainable & won't go away. Some of us can feel that soreness in our neck when we swallow along with possibly a type of clicking.

3) We do know that this condition is persistent because many people talked about it going away & then returning & having it for many years (which frankly scares the he.. out of me because I have had it now for only a week. The thought of this being chronic is very depressing to me & my heart goes out to you long-term folk).

4) No one except the TMJ folk, as their thread mentions, may have found relief by using mouth guards & taking ibuprophen. Although, they have not written back to say that this has definitely cured their symptoms. No one else has found any resolution to our medical condition. Even the people who have insurance (include me on the NO insurance list) that could actually afford to see various doctors & that have had various tests were able to get any sort of positive diagnosis just speculation.

5) A number of people mentioned something to do with dental work on that side of the mouth which may have triggered their symptoms. I for one, was put under 3 weeks ago to have 5 teeth worked on due to a severed nerve in my jaw 35 yrs. ago coincidentally, on the same side of my mouth as this neck problem. Two weeks later, my neck symptoms started. There could be a definite connection here.

6) Many people complained about having very high stress levels around the time that their symptoms started. This is the same for me -another strong connection for most of us it seems.

7) Many people mentioned that antibiotics did not work for them, even high spectrum antibiotics. One person early on said that their symptoms went away when taking antibiotics for something else like an ear ache or strep throat but then came back later.

8) Some people mentioned that their doctors told them it could be a blocked salivary gland. Can any of you people give us a follow up as to what your doctor did to unblock your salivary gland & whether or not it worked? Can the person that mentioned they were going to have their salivary gland removed please write back to tell us if this stopped your symptoms? I believe that this person had other more demanding medical problems & symptoms that most of us have not experienced such as dry mouth. Their issue may turn out to be something totally different than ours.

9) Someone else on 1-30-09 was told it could be lymphatic congestion. Anyone else have any leads on this or have done any more research on this that they can share with the rest of us?

10) One person said she was going to try acupuncture. Can you please write back & tell us your results? -same for anyone else that may have tried acupuncture since this discussion began.

11) Someone mentioned going to a massage therapist for Trigger Therapy. I for one have no idea what this is but it is important that we all keep an open mind because we have no idea what works to cure us.

It would be great if we could all hear from some of the first folk to write to let us know how you are progressing especially the person -Motormarrow who was the first person to really pinpoint this condition early on.

I believe if we stay in close contact, we may have better luck finding a solution to this illness that has plagued us all so......................
Chin up everyone!

Hi,

I'm the person that wrote the previous thread.

I forgot to include the people who said that their doctors told them it could possibly be acid reflux yet, we have not heard from them since so the jury is still out on that one.

I also forgot to mention the guy who not only experienced the same medical condition as the rest of us for 5 yrs. but believes that his progressed into what he called Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia. You can access this page to find out more: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/001636.htm#Definition

Glossopharyngeal Neuralgia seems to involve the Ninth Cranial Nerve. If you will read, although the symptoms do not include our symptoms or the neck itself, instead the back of the nose & throat (nasopharynx), back of the tongue, ear, throat, tonsils & voice box (larynx), this nerve is very close to where we experience our pain & discomfort so it is possible that one may be related to the other.

Maybe someone that has insurance can discuss this with one of their doctors and get back to us?

When you mentioned the tongue, I also have BMS which is burning mouth syndrome (had this for over 10yrs) mine is mainly on the right side of the tongue, which coincidentally is the same side as the throat/neck pain. But this pain is more annoying and when I eat it doesn't hurt at all. So I don't know if one has to do with the other.

I just recently switched Drs, I went there for my Sciatic nerve......but I did ask about my neck, she says normally that pain is from the sinuses or in my case my Fibro. I asked her if I should be worried about it and she said no. Easy for her to say.

Mine is on the right side like right next to my throat. My sciatic hurts terribly but I know what it is, the neck doesn't hurt anything like like the sciatic but it makes me an anxious mess.

I'm the person that wrote the thread before you that you commented on. Some people did say that they had mouth problems. No one has a doctor that has confirmed that it may be caused by other mouth problems like dental work for instance. You may have read that I personally just had extensive dental work on the lower left side where my neck pain started shortly after. I have queried my oral surgeon about the neck pain began but he will not admit to anything probably because he is in fear of a lawsuit. I suggest that if you have insurance & doctors, you should completely explore all options that we all discussed & which many people on this thread without insurance are not able to do. Please be so kind as to share any info & relief you may have gotten. This will not only help yourself but all of us that are in the same boat. We need to hear from any one who has tried acupuncture or any of the other alternative treatments we have discussed.

On a personal note: It has now been three weeks for me. I saw a physician's assistant at the local community health center. She prescribed 500mg. of Naproxen twice a day & told me to hold a warm towel on it. This did take the soreness away for awhile. I am not a drugs person so I plan on using the Naproxen only on the days the soreness bothers me the most. I also tried swabbing that area of my neck & lightly massaging in a liniment I have been using for years called ZHENG GU SHUI made by Yulin Pharmaceudical in China. This really seems to help reduce the neck pain & discomfort for a short time. It can be purchased over the counter at any Chinese herb store or market.

That's it for now. Come on folks, let's here from you too!

I made an appt with my new GP for tomorrow just for my neck. Hopefully she will look more into it. We shouldn't have to just live with it! I have Fibromyalgia and told to just live with it, and when I got dx'd with the BMS (burning mouth syndrome) I was told I'll have to just live/deal with it. I don't need this again.

I'll come back tomorrow and let you know what happened.

I just got back from the Dr's. She didn't feel anything abnormal and she poked and prodded my entire neck. She feels I "might" have nerve damage from my dental procedures. But she is going to have me have a CTscan of my neck. I have to wait for it to be pre approved by my insurance then Im going.

Sorry, I didnt have any answers yet. I'll keep you posted.
