This is in reply to the last post. What you are describing sounds like Trigeminal Neuralgia. I've had this weird condition for about 12 years or more. I take Tegretol and that takes care of it for me. I about went crazy before they finally found a diagnosis. Read up on this.

This other "pain in the neck" that the rest of the thread is about is now happening to me too. It's on my left side (the same side I have the Trigeminal Neuralgia on). It's a deep sore place. It was throbbing all morning, and now it has stopped. Very weird. I got a headache from it for a while too, and now that is gone as well. This is a very weird thing. Mine does not hurt when I swallow, or bend my neck - however the muscles in my neck are really tight. I have a desk job and sit at a computer pretty much all day. But this just started and I've done the same job for years and years.

Sure hope someone can find an answer. I just don't have a lot of faith in these docs anymore. They run you through a bunch of tests and then shrug and say "do the best you can." I know they are only human, but you'd think with so many people experiencing this someone would get a clue. I really do wonder if it is inflamation of the sheath of the nerve or vein.

I have exactly the same symptoms..I carry a bag on my left side weighing about 12 pounds everyday..I dont know if this might be the cause.

Hi,
I have the same thing as well and no one knows what it is.
Moreover, I'm in Munich. SO it's not only that no one knows what it is, it is also that no one really cares.

Did any of you find out what this might be?

After my investigation I thought it is the facial nerve that goes into both neck/throat and head.
It's also my left side that is affected.

Help please!

Thanks a ton in advance.

Hi

Glad I found this site. Have same! I had major ear infection about 7 yrs and went to an ENT who perscribed an antibiotic that cleared it up for years. However he no longer takes my new insurance and the nurse will not give me the name of that antibotic.

I went to another ENT on Th who takes my insurance but who looked at me like I had two heads when I explained symptoms. He said he would not give me rx for infection because he cannot see any infection. This has been dirving me crazy. Mine started with sore left side of face. It originally felt like I had an inflamed sinus and then traveled deep into side of neck, teeth, jaw, shoulder, etc. no lump just wen I pressed on it or moved a certian way it really hurt. Left side felt out of balance. Neck and should pain / throbbing when I turn or lift my head up. I rearly go to the doctors. Have to be forced only if I have an issue that won't go away. I don't like medication but will take it if it is temporary and relieves pain. Don't like this ENT because I felt he did not believe me.

I tried something different which I only tried once before when I had a lower back problem. I went one time for accupunture and my back pain went away. My daughter suggestsed I try it. I am 54 yrs. old if that makes any difference!

Well, I went today and the oddest thing is that it helped. Now I have an external lump on the side of my neck and still ringing in ear and and some discomfort but I feel much better. I felt like there was something foreign in there before I went for accupuncture, althought now I have a lump ipertruding on the left side of my neck I feel some relief. This is kind of weird to me. I think the lump may have been inverted before I went and now think that somehow the accupunture helped it to come out therfore relieving some pressure. I hope eventually it will go away.

I have another appointment next week so I will keep everyone poseted. Also I may try taking 1 advil for the next 10 days as I read on this post because it makes sense to me to reduce the swelling and I will let you know how it goes.

Hope this helps someone!

HI Everyone

Right i also suffer from fibromyalgia , ive had neck pain all the time, but was told its the fibro mmm the pain is in the left side front side and back, seems to hurt more around 6ish and gets worse. I have just started to have Reiki Done by a friend 3 times in total, the second time last week i noticed alot of pain around my color bone??? had reiki saturday just gone 27th feb 2010 and the pain in me color bone was so intence so we both had a chat about it, now i have a "touch of healing book" jin shin Jyutsu which i do on my hands, in this book the 22s located just below the color bone balances the thyroid and parathyroid glands mmmm ok.

Something else ive been researching is foods and how they effect my fibro as some make it worse e.g. wheat , anyway it says that fibro sufferes have a problem prosseessing calcium( i get acne painfull spots too) and this can sit in our bodys, this is when the parathyroid gland comes into it, this controls the calcium levels , releasing a hormone , i read that vitamin D should help, so the to get rid of my acne i went for cod liver oil capsules A E D vitamins , OMG day seven my acne is now spots not painfull and they are going yippyyy.

last night was one of the scariest nights ever, i had a pain in my ear like really painfull, this then moved to the front of my throat but only on the left omg it really hurt, then i could feel it moving to the back of my neck ouch ouch then my color bone, shoulder at the back then it moved to me breast (left) then down the side ouch ouch then into my back??? then into my rib then into my hip groin and the went ???? this happend 3 times and took a copl of hours , what on earth is that all about?? this also happened about 7 months ago same movement but at 1 am in the morning.

So went to doctors today mmm told her about fibro and instanlty she siad thats what it is , i explained about my acne and taking cod liver oil, and asked her about parathyroid gland, she did touch my neck and asked me to swollow, i couldnt swollow, so she has put me in for blood tests, luckilly there was a cancelation on wednesday this week . but when i tried to expalin about my pain that i had last night, she very rudly said well we will see in the blood test and the opened her door for me to leave, i had to bite my tongue , i know doctors only get 5mins with each patient so i didnt say owt but was very angry about this.

So will post back info once i have it, hope this helps "the Worrier" as you seem to have the exact same syptoms as me if anyone want to email me its

I've been suffering from some sort of neck / throat problem for six weeks or so. It started off in a high pressure situation, new job, away from home I woke up with a sore throat. I then developed the feeling of lumps in the throat. I've also had tenderness in the front right muscle that goes from the collar bone up to the ear (that's now passed). Went to the Doc who gave me amoxicillin. It cleared the soreness but still have this sensation of random lumps in my throat. There seems to be occasional swelling and tightness around the thyroid area aswell. Eating and drinking help. Occasionally there's a mild feeling like I was grabbed by the throat, an ache in the back of my neck and a feeling that someone is touching the left side of my face just between the side of the eye socket and temple (on the pressure point). Lymph nodes have been up and down in the neck and groin but this seems to have subsided in the last week. I had a sinus infection in November that I had anti-biotics for aswell, that cleared up but left me with a constantly running nostril until the sore throat started and it stopped!

The random nature of the symptoms are exasperating. Monday morning I felt almost normal and today has been better than Tues / Weds. Right now I can't feel any particular lumpiness - but the left side of my neck feels tight and a bit swollen.

Obviously cancer is always the first thing you worry about, particularly as an ex-smoker (quit 4 years ago) and someone who drank quite a lot in younger life (not so much these days - bottle of wine or two a month). I'm giving it another few days then if it's no better will be off to the GP again.

It's been reassuring to see other people with similar complaints. Maybe I'm not going to die in six months after all :-)

I had the same problems for years. I have a mild case of hypothroidism. Plus I do get the odd sinus infection and recently went on antibiotics for a possilbe tooth or ear infection. What I did was take some vitamins and amino acids for my thyroid. I used a netti pot for my sinuses and am getting my teeth looked after. I am much much better. No sore throat or lumpiness.

It could possibly a herpes virus...these *sore necks/throats* go away and reappear throughout your life if your infected....usually when your going through periods of stress

Thanks to this thread, I've been to the doctor. I have exactly the same symptoms as everyone here and other symptoms, such as consitipation, that I thought were unrelated but it seems they're probably all part of it. The doctor believes I have DE QUERVAIN thyroiditis and I'm awaiting blood tests. It firstly causes hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) and then goes to hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid). It can happen at any age. It often causes the same pain in the neck that we're all experiencing that radiates along the jaw to the ear, etc. It can be on either side or both. I don't have an obvious thryroid swelling so the doctor didn't originally think it was that. This is a rarer form of thyroiditis (the most common is Hashimoto's) and can sometimes clear itself up in a few months to a year. It can also come back but sometimes you will need to be on medication for the rest of your life to control it if the thyroid has become damaged. I'll let you know if this is confirmed and maybe you all need to get the simple bood test if you still have the neck pain.

Its your lymph node. It will make that feeling of being sore but its not exactly your throat. Had it happen twice. When swollen it will cause a dull ache, can pinch off the nerve and make a sharp pain run through the back of your jaw and even in your ear. They can test this just by applying pressure with fingers and see that its swollen. Antiobiotics work great, but if you have it as bad as I did you will be repeating the medicine. After that I had no more problems. Good luck.

I am amazed at how many people have this problem. The same thing as been nagging me on and off now for about a week. Yes, i can ponit to the spot that annoys me. Again, so many of you report the same thing that i am experiencing, turning your head you feel it more, swallowing food, etc. WIll go to doctor to see what he has to say. I have reflux, and should probably have an endoscopy once and for all. Will let everyone knows what happens

I have a spot on the left side of my neck/throat that feels irritatied. I'v had it for 2 months now. The area of discomfort is deep in the neck almost in the throat. It's under my jaw bone right near the area you take your pulse. For the past 2 days my throat has been irritatied in that area aswell.

I thought it might be Gerd and my Ent did aswell. He ran a scope down my throat 1 year ago because I had a sore throat for over a month at that time. He said it looked a bit red and had me buy prilosic OTC. The OTC helped my bad heartburn but the feeling in my throat/neck is driving me nuts now. I have started the 14 day OTC again hoping it will clear up. I'm a 30 year old male and I do smoke.

I wasn't sure Gerd was causing the discomfort tho. If acid is getting that high up in my throat I thought I would've tasted it. But I don't. However it does get pretty bad, the heartburn that is. I have an opp. with my ent june 4th. I'm gonna see if he will run the scope back down my throat and see whats up.

The mild pain is with me 24/7 nothing takes it away. It's really starting to cause me A TON of anziety.

These posts have been occuring since April 2007 and nobody has really been diagnosed with an answer. I think the stomach anxiety diagnosis is one of those catch-all diagnoses that doctors make when they don't know the answer and sort of put it back on the patient, like, "Oh, you are just experiencing anxiety, etc. What they are really saying is there is nothing wrong with you, it's all in your head.

I have had fluid in both years for nearly a year, comes and goes, ear pain comes and goes, pressure. Recently it has gotten worse. Two weeks ago my left jaw would not close and teeth alignment was off.

Three days ago the pressure built. Two days ago I woke up with this pinpoint tenderness on the right side of the neck about an inch away from the throat. It is not lymph nodes or glands. If I take my index finger and press in, the tenderness is deep. Also, at times the muscle feels slightly inflammed and tender. Sometimes it aches down into the trapezius muscle. I went to the walk-in clinic last night and was diagnosed with ear infections and prescribed omnicef and a nasal antihistamine.

It sounds like this is one of those ailments that doctors are not sure what it is and throw things at it. After reading some of these posts, there are some similarities such as ear infections, tooth infections, relief after antibiotics, but then reemergence of pain/tenderness.

The commonality seems to be long-term infection (my ears have been messed up for about a year) and then this marked neck tenderness. I would be interested in knowing if anybody has had prescribed antibiotics long-term, i.e., four weeks or more, and symptomology resolved.
