I can relate to this pain. I am 28 years old and have also had off-and-on pain in my head. Mine is almost always on the left side (rarely on the right side) and it can come everyday or every few months.
My pain is an absolute shooting pain from the bottom of my head in a straight line to about the middle of my head on the left side. It is a quick, sharp, shooting line of pain that almost feels like it's burning in my head.
My mom was a nurse for many years, and she recommended I pay close attention to any activities I do during the same days that I get the pains, as she said that a pinched nerve in the neck, can actually cause shooting pains in the back or in the head.
I noticed that my pain sometimes comes if I move my head to quickly, or later in the day after I do Yoga or walk on the treadmill. So for me, the pain is most likely due to a pinched nerve. I also sometimes will sleep funny, and for that day I might occasionally get the shooting pains.
I suggest paying attention to your activities, and see how your pains might relate to them. My mom is fairly certain I have a pinched nerve in my neck area, and the pain shoots into the back of my head.

IM HAVING THE SHARP QUICK STABING PAINS IN THE RIGHT SIDE OF MY HEAD AND THEY ARE BECOMING MORE FREQUENT. LAST WEEK IT HAPPENED AND MY RIGHT EYE TURNED BLOODSHOT RED. I DIDNT GO TO THE DOCTOR BECAUSE I FIGURED THEY WOULD JUST SAY SINUSES AND HIT ME WITH A LARGE BILL. ITS SAD THATS WE HAVE TO LIVE LIKE THIS INSTEAD OF HAVING A DOCTOR TRUELY FEL OUR PAIN AND DIG DEEP TO RESEARCH WHAT COULD BE GOING ON WITH US. MY PAIN HAPPENS UNEXPECTEDLY AND STOPS ME IN THE MIDDLE OF WHAT EVER I AM DOING BECAUSE IM FORCED TO GRAB MY HEAD IT HURTS SO BAD. IM AFFRAID IT WILL HAPPEN WHILE IM DRIVING ONE DAY. IM 34 YRS OLD NEVER HAD ANY CHILDREN OR ANY MEDICAL PROBLEMS. BUT ALSO NOW IM HAVING A PAIN IN MY BIG TOE ON MY RIGHT FOOT ANOTHER SHARP PAIN, SINCE IM A LMT. I KNOW ABOUT REFLEXOLGY AND I KNOW THAT THE BIG TOE IS WHERE YOU WORK FOR HEADACHE SO I WONDER IF THAT PAIN IS RELATED TO THE VERY PAINFUL HEAD PAIN.. IVE TRIED LIGHTS OFF AFTER A NICE SOAK INTHE TUB WITH SOFT RELAXING MUSIC PLAYING, IVE TRIED MASSAGE TO SEE IF I WAS TIGHT, I TRIED A FACIAL IVE WASHED MY HAIR SO MUCH IT WILL NEVER BE DIRTY AGAIN. IVE TAKEN PAINS MEDS AND EVEN WENT WITHOUT THEM FOR WEEKS TO SEE IF THE PAIN MEDS WERE THE CAUSE . I ONLY DRINK WATER AND I DONT EAT MEAT, I GO TO THE GYM AND I HAVE NO STRESSES. SO WHAT OH WHAT COULD BE WRONG WITH ME.. IM SCARED BECAUSE I DONT WANT TO DIE YOUNG AND WHEN YOU HAVE A PAIN IN YOUR HEAD AS PAINFUL AND AS SHARP COMING SO QUICK YOU CANT HELP BUT OT WORRY.. I PRAY AND I PRAY AND IM GOING TO JUST KEEP PRAYING THAT IT GOES AWAY. I HOPE YOU GUYS GET WELL ALSO. LOVE THE GIRL WHO IS ALWAYS SMILING EXCEPT WHEN THIS PAIN COMES....
I've had this for 3 days now. Went to the doctor yesterday and he thinks it might be trigeminal fibromyalgia but he told to monitor for a rash (shingles) or Bells Palsy. He gave me Celebrex and said it should go away in a couple of days. If not, he's prescribed cortisone if the Celebrex doesn't work.
Like most people who posted, I have the quick stabbing pain randomly near my left temple with the left side of my face feeling sensitive or weird (can't explain it...I just know it feels different).

This sounds like something I have had for a while called Trigeminal Neuralgia. I had this when I was younger, which is uncommon, but found this forum whilst investigating whether people also have this type of pain shooting through their ears (lobes) as well. These descriptions of the pain in this forum match exactly what I had. It has been a few years since this latest occurance I am having and I am not sure if this is typical.
For some reassurance I suggest you read about TN online or consult your Doctor. I was so shocked and worried about this awful pain until i got this explanation.

Yes. I'm under a great deal of stress right now, and I'm getting the exact same pains - right by my ear on the left and everything. It's off and on and I think we might need to try and find a way to relax....
good luck with that, tho!!lol

ive been getting consistent tension headaches in the back of my head for about a month.........so i went to the doctor who gave me some medication for my headache and muscle relaxers(i guess to keep me less tense) then two days after the doctor visit im getting sharp pains a little above my left temple....they are very sharp acute pains for 3-5 seconds....and only occur maybe one or twice and hour.....do i have seriouse condition or not please let me know cause i am worried about it........
Well, it's good to see I'm not alone here. I've had these for over 10 years with the same degree of frequency as most mentions in this thread. I was convinced it was a brain tumor or some form of brain cancer and I became increasingly concerned. I finally saw a doctor about it but he was quick to dimiss it, saying it was probably nothing. "Probably" does not factor into my idea of a pronosis and the lack of scientific study or response really annoyed me. I ended up scheduling an MRI. But the doctors found nothing. This really bugged me as I felt like I was shrugged off as it the pain was fictional and no real explanation or so much as even an educated guess was in the offering. Needless to say I still get these shooting pains. Had 2 last week each lasting about 6-7 seconds (usually they last just 1-3 seconds) and both were about 3 minutes apart. Nothing this week.
mine i get a sudden pain in my head then my head kills right afterwoods feels like im just gonna pop %-) and it gives me the worsed aniety and i cant tak it
I started having infrequent shooting head pains (different locations in my head) about 5 years ago. No accident and I am and have been very healthly all my life. After a couple of years of the pains being in my head, now they show up anywhere in my body. It's a stabbing shooting pain that lasts for about a second and comes randomly every 20 to 45 seconds or so. It's VERY painful causing me to wince every time they occur. As I mentioned they used to be only in my head, but now can show up anywhere, in my arm, my side, my leg, my shoulder, my head, etc. When it starts it stays in that location for a day or so and then goes away. I have noticed that I tend to get the pain when I am tired, but not always. Sometimes I take Motrin for the pain because I can't tolerate it. It sounds crazy to me. I call it my "nerve pain" but I really have no idea of what it could be or even if I should get checked. It's likely that if I set up an appointment I would not even have any pain at the time so the Dr. would have nothing to really go on.
I know this may sound weird, but why does it seem like a lot of 28 year olds are having this problem. I have been reading through the posts and people are saying "I am only 28", which is kind of odd.
I was in a head on collision in 2000. I began experiencing severe memory loss, depression, appetite loss, loss of sleep, and much more.
My QEEG indicated moderate brain injury and areas of inactivity. A week ago now I begin experiencing sharp pains around my right eyebrow that shoots into my eye. It definitely stops me in my tracks as well. There is no warning and it lasts for a few seconds. Then it leaves around a nagging pain. I feel a lot of head pressure as well. WIth the brain damage and inactivity, I am wondering if it is related. I feel like my brain is full. A previous MRI was normal except thickened sinus cavities are something like that.
I dont know if it is brain related or sinus related. I dont have sinus headaches, allergies, or even regular headaches for that matter. I
The jolts of pain is unexpected and very very powerful. Pain medicine nor muscle relaxers do not work.
I am also 28.

Ive been getting a shooting pain on the same spot of my head on the left side about the middle of the left side. Its been on and off for about a year now. Sometimes it wont happen for around a month. When it does happen its randomly about 5 times a day. it is moderately painful but only lasts around 1-2 seconds. Although I have sinus problems right now and the pain is happening, it also happens when I am not suffering from any sinus or allergy related problems. It seems to be randomly triggered but sometimes by the movement of my head.
You are all very lucky, I have had this shooting pain as long as I can remember, and the pain never seems to go away with me. I may go to the doctors soon, I am very worried.
Most of the time I can ignore the pain but it has gotten worse. I am young and have never had any very bad illnesses; I have never been in a bad accident. I have tried a lot of different types of meds but it never leaves, I need one of you to help me find some meds that will make the pain go down.
Please help soon.
