The title of this thread is concerning. "suffer from chest pains after giving up smoking" ... I finally escaped my nicotine addiction about 2 weeks ago. I want to be clear that I didn't give up anything... because to give something up you have to have something In the first place. Smoking gives you nothing in the first place so there is nothing to give up. In fact I have gained a lot from not smoking, I won't think for a second that I have had to give up smoking. I fell into a nicotine trap after my very first cigarette and I'm proud to say that I have broken free from my nicotine addiction. Nicotine is a drug just like heroin or Cocain... The only difference is its legal and socially acceptable to consume nicotine on a daily basis. It's also considerably more addictive. Sorry I just had to say that before actually Responding to the thread. (also I'm writing This on my iPhone at 2am with no desire to proof read) Mild chest pains are a natural part of the healing process. Your body is dealing with all of the c**p we have put into it for years. Steamy showers, breathing excersizes and advil are helping me overcome these pains. Ultimately if you are concerned consult your doctor.

I've been stopped 2 months after 40 years on the dreaded weed, waking up about 3 to 4 times through the night and wide awake at that, now started to feel chest pains both left and right sides, looking at this site I now  know its normal for these symptoms to be happening , since stopping smoking feel much better for doing so and so does my wallet.

i have the same problem its more anoying then painful it feels like a bruise or how you prenounce it (i'm from holland)
how long will it last (i did the same thing with quitting could'ndt keep my hands of it)

It has now been my third day of giving up cold turkey. I am experiencing pain in my chest region. Very hard to breathe, chest feeling very tight and  its very annoying, although not that painful. I was a smoker for 10 years approx 10 cigs a day (Menthol) . Im so glad i found out from this page what everyone else is experiencing, I was getting very worried. Next step get hubby to quit! Well done to all and keep it up.

The internet can be a wonderful thing. I came across this thread from a Google search and it has put me at ease a little.

I am into my sixth day of quiting and I am, like many others who posted here, experiencing pain/discomfort/soreness in the upper left side of my chest, as well as dry and wet coughing, plus I had problems sleeping last night. I have taken to e-cigs to help me stop as I have tried a few times before and failed. I began to notice the discomfort after the fourth day, I at first thought it was the vapor from the e-cigs irritating my chest, it could still well be. The e-cigs are beginning to lose their novelty factor and I am starting to use them less and only when I feel the craving coming on. Eventually I will stop them all together.

The withdrawal from the nicotine causes anxiety and raised stress levels, which can in turn cause aches and pains which causes stress and anxiety. I smoked, not heavily, for nearly 30 years so I am not expecting anything miraculous, but my chest already feels less restricted and freer, especially in the mornings. I feel positive and driven this time, although I have to say the e-cigs have helped. Thanks to all for the information and advice, and for the comfort it has provided.

Stopped smoking cold turkey 3 days ago. one single cig since. A few bowls of weed is fine. Takes the edge off. Search brought me here for light chest pain on and off on left side.

The only thing that bothers me is this damn dry cough and this sudden urge to drink alot of water! I have never really drank water but all of a sudden my body says drink water... I dont understand. But the cough is the bothersome part. Everyone thinks I am sick when I am not. Girlfriend said don;t tell her till three years in as she wouldn't believe me till then HAHA. SO for now to her I am "sick" I thought I was sick earlier this week as I said I quit 3 days ago but stopped buying them over a week ago and smoked a few single black and milds in between that time and now I understand the bronchitis I thought I had was due to the quitting smoking. It was bad smoked for 10 yrs on and off 1-2 packs a day on bad days 2 packs. But over the last few yrs weened myself to one pack every three days and now I am home free!

Starting the gym in a few weeks, lets see how this goes. Plus my teeth starting getting yellow ugh! Whitening system here I come!

Trust me it is harsh at first with the side effects of bronchitis but it is worth it after the first three days.

I would also Like to add that I have found some relief from the chest pains through the inhalation of steam.  I fill the bathroom with steam before I take a shower and take some deep breaths in there, often leaving it running hot while I dry, moisturise etc.  I try and use the steam room every time I go to the gym 3-4 times a week.  These things have certainly helped.

Boy and here I thought it was curtains for me with the chest pain and clogged up feeling on the right side of my chest when I take a deep breath. I'm 24 years old started smoking when I was 16 so a little over 8 years. It didn't get heavy until I was like  21-22 years old . When I hit 23 it was 6 to 8 cigarettes a day after that it was ridiculous I had to quit. I was starting to feel sluggish and sick in the stomach from smoking. Its been 3 weeks so far no relapses.

The first 2 weeks it was the dizzy spells and the headaches. No coughing for some reason. The chest pain was on and off kinda like an annoying ache feeling and the tightness in the chest followed by aches and pains. I'm still having that issue now. No coughing is the mysterious thing, so I ruled out stage 1 lung cancer (for all you hypochondriacs out there like me) The first sign of it is coughing up BLOOD so if your NOT having that issue your wasting your time going to the doctor. And if you haven't smoked for more then 20 years the chances are MUCH lower then someone who has  been smoking for less then 10 years. I went to the doctor and the doctor said its no uncommon to feel that way when you quit. No chest x-rays or anything, I believe if i was an object of concern she would of done one. I'm not a doctor if you feel that somethings off and you need to see one, see one. It earlier the better. Anybody can quit you just gotta have the WILL POWER to do it. No will power no results. You can do it.

I am having the same issue.  It seems pretty widespread.  I'm having chest pains in the dead center of my chest, where I imagine the two biggest valves of the lungs are.  And only when I breathe in more deeply.  I think when you quit smoking, your subconscious mind will create a lot of things that make you stressed, thus making you think you want that cigarette.  I quit cold turkey for a week and I've been doing great, I just have been pretending problems aren't that real!  It might also be the cillia (sp) of your lungs, the lung hairs that oxygen bonds to, are regrowing, and young, and the breathing rattles them a bit at the deepest breathes.  Remember when you smoked you inhaled DEEPLY to get the most, those part of the lungs do need to be EXERCISED, not ignored now that you smoke nothing!  Enjoy everyone, good luck.

I agree that you didn't give anything up. But smoking is something to, nicotene, and it feels damn great. I went through the process understanding that I WAS GIVING SOMETHING UP, that IT WAS SOMETHING THAT FELT GOOD, but that I SHOULD SUFFER FOR MY SINS. This worked, its different for everyone. Don't take advil! Just do it to it! I've heard painkillers make stomach ulcers, don't add more bad to that good temple of a body! KEEP CLEANSIN! (also if nicotene is nothing then smokers become completely irrational, and we were all smokers, and we know that there's a REASON, not just addiction, a biochemical euphoria! point being, if you treat a smoker like they're killing themselves, they'll smoke more (due to stress) if you treat them with some love and have some hard conversations where you don't use SHOULD and use MIGHT, then you'll make the cigarettes conquerable together.) Just some words to the ex-smokers, let's not become those bigots that we hated when we smoked. "blahblahblah you shouldn't smoke" I know, I lost my dad to cancer, but it was still his choice, and he liked cigarettes, so he lived his way. I realize that's what killed him, but that doesn't destroy his volition, self, love, intelligence, etc. Rock on everyone! Free yourself from your chains, don't define others' chains but in an effort to be LOVING and not HATEFULs :) Much loves rastas!

I quit smoking a pk a day after 40 yrs, 9 mths ago and started vaping 18mg nicotine oil. I had a heart attack (mild) b4 I quit smoking. I have been to a lung Dr, a heart Dr, chiropractor and my PCP, telling them all that I had a horrible aching pain on the right side of my sternum. No one responds!!! The strange thing is I got bronchitis a month ago & as soon as I got sick the awful aching pain stopped!! I am still vaping. I am scared to death the pain will return....

YES, GO FIGURE! :-) I QUITE A CARTON & HALF A WEEK BUT AM STILL VERY ADDICTED TO THE NICOTINE IN FRUIT FLAVORS VAPE OILS,THOUGH I HAVE CUT THE NICOTINE IN HALF SINCE I STARTED VAPING. THAT'S WHY I HAVE BEEN SO CONCERNED. I DIDN'T FEEL THE ACHING PAIN SHOULD HAVE LASTED EIGHT MONTHS, BUT IT DID!! NOT 1 DR CAN TELL ME WHY THE PAIN STOPPED WHEN I HAD AN ACUTE CASE OF BRONCHITIS NOR DID 1 EVER TELL ME IT WAS RELATED TO NOT SMOKING CIGS. SAD, BECAUSE I AM A RETIRED NURSE FROM THE OLD SCHOOL WHEN WE WERE THE WORST OF THE SMOKERS!! .

Im 16 years old smoking ive smoked for 2 years i kno im not a big time smoker ive been having random chest pain near heart my stepmom is a nurse and she said its common withdrawel symptoms i quit cold turkey tuesday night of last week juss need some extra info thanks.

I am not trying to scare you and it may be nothing, but I read several times that you should be more worried about not coughing than if you cough a lot when quitting. You are probably fine but a general check-up won't hurt. At least you will gain peace of mind. I have been a non-smoker for 6 days and will never smoke again. Chantix helped me though it is obviously not for everyone. If you never smoke again you will be thankful! Congratulations on quitting!
