I have dry, sore, itchy, cracked & swollen lips for a week now. Just pointing out it was because of a reaction to mango skin. Check what your eating it could be a reaction to something you keep in contact with your lips.

Have you had your thyroid checked?

I like how everyone comes together and everyone is so supportive in times of need.  I just noticed my lips are inflammed with dryness and they are not crusty yet but I am scared for what the turn out will be.  They have been getting worse throughout the day.  I have been using Eucerin lotion and chapstick.  They are not helping.  Prom is this weekend ugggghhhh whhhhyyy meeeeeee..................  Anyways, i hope it clears up.  I really do.

I have the same problem! This has been ongoing for me almost 1 1/2 years. I have been to the doctor and been thru the antiboitics/steroids. I have only been using vaseline in the tube over this time as well....I do not know if it is an allergic reaction from a certain food, or the sun, or my immune system or it could be a combo of things. I have been trying to drink more water and make sure I am taking my vitamins. I will go back to my doctor on Friday this week and talk with him and go from there!! This is horrible! Itch, burn, sting, dry, cracked, swollen....I just want to take sandpaper and sand em down!! LOL.... I am definitely going to check out the toothpaste and see if it has Triclosan in it.

I am glad I found this page!! At least now I know I am not alone!!

Take care!

I started to have these same symptoms a few days ago. I would wake up in the morning and my lips would be very Swollen and very ITCHY. They were very dry and I needed to constantly keep applying chap stick or Vaseline to keep them moist. The Chap stick that i was using was the Burt's Bees kind. My lips felt sunburnt and dried so I kept putting the chap stick on. The next morning i woke up and my lips were HUGE and sore. I immediately ditched the chap stick and started putting this stuff called Corona Multi-Purpose Ointment on. This stuff is a heavy duty ointment that they use to heal cuts and wounds on horses and other animals. It immediately brought down the swelling but my lips were still VERY itchy. I felt like i wanted to scratch them completely off. It was horrible. There were also little clear/white blisters that started to cover my upper lip. I was incredibly uncomfortable. That night I randomly decided to put on some Vicks Vapor night rub on them and FINALLY found relief. It gave my lips a wonderful burning sensation and completely numbed them of their itchiness. It was incredible. The only thing was that in about 20 mins the burning would fade and they would start to itch again so i had to keep applying it. The next morning i was looking on the internet for some explanation of what was happening to my lips. I came across this site and found something that mentioned being allergic to Burt's Bees, the stuff that i had been applying on my lips right before and after my symptoms came up. I looked into it further and found out that i was indeed having a allergic reaction. I immediately took a lot of Benadryl and the itchiness went away and i have not had it since! My lips are now recovering and the blisters have pealed away. they are still dry and cracked but they are nothing compared to the swollen, itchy, blistered covered lips form the previous days. I'm still applying the Corona ointment until my cracks in my lips go away but all in all the symptoms are all the way gone. What i experienced was an allergic reaction to BURTS BEES CHAP STICK. I never suspected it because i have used it before in the past. I would recommend taking benadryl and using Corona Multi-Purpose Ointment to clear it up. If you are not getting relief from that use the Vicks Vapor Rub.... I know it sounds weird but i was in heaven after i put that stuff on....

I hope this helps!! Good Luck!

Okay so i have had this for about 2 weeks and i tried basically everything that was recommended to me by doctors but nothing seemed to work. some one had told me to try the following: get a green tomato and cut it into fourths. once that is done you can get a container and pour baking soda into it. now you dip a peice of the green tomato into the container. once you do that you rub the peice inside of your mouth like on both sides of the inside of your cheeks and inside your upper and lower lip and tongue. i did this for 2 times a day but you could do 3 and it cleared away on the 4th day. after i washed my mouth with the tomato i cleaned my lips with water and dried them with a clean towl then got a cotton ball and dipped it in coconut oil and rubbed it on my lips. try smiling with it so it gets in the creases. after that i applied a good amount of vaselin onto my lips and went on with my day. i did it in the morning right after brushing my teeth and at night before brudhing them as well. i also drank plenty of water and it seemed to go away. i Hope this helps because it helped me and i know how terrible this feels.

I HAVE HAD RED ITCHY LIPS FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS NOW. NOTHING HELPS. DID A LITTLE RESEARCH AND FOUND THAT B-12 INSUFFIENCY CAUSES THIS SYMPTOM. IF YOU HAVE ACOUPLE OF ALCHOLIC DRINKS A DAY YOU MAY NOT ABSORB THIS KEY VITAMIN PROPERLY.REDUCING ALCHOL CONSUMPTION AND TAKING A MULTI VITAMIN HAS HELPED ME TREMEDOUSLY. GAVE UP ON ALL LIPSTICKS(DON'T NEED IT ,MY LIPS ARE RED ENOUGH) BALMS.CHAPSTICKS. ALL SEEMED TO IRRITATE.I HAVE BEEN USING EXTRA VIRGIN COCONUT OIL AS A LIP BALM AND GLOSS.SOOO SOOTHING.HAS GREAT HEALING PROPERTIES AS IT IS ALSO ANTI-BACTERIAL AND ANTI FUNGAL.LOOK UP THE BENEFITS. HOPE THIS MAY HELP.

Hey I have this condition every now and agin my lips get really dry and it uncomfortable and no Vaseline or chapstick help. The only thing that works for me is a little triamcinolone acetonide ointment. Ask your doctor and give it a try :) I hope this helps !

Its fungal... get an anti fungal creme and go yo doc and suggest they give you fluconazole ( diflucan). I had this for years, finally figured out it was thrush. Antifungals work but u need dietary changes to keep it from recurring.

don't use Vaseline. it actually dries ur lips out more. (wierd, right?) you can try Vaseline LIP TREATMENT. or cocoa butter chapstick.

I've had this problem a few times. My dr,. told me to stop using flouride toothpaste and it stopped the bumps, itching, swelling and peeling (took $ weeks or so to finally heal). That was over a year ago and now in the last month I've been having problems again, though not as bad. This time instead of using vasoline or my regular chapstick I've used pure shae butter and it healed them within two weeks.

I had this problem for close to a year. If left alone my lips would dry out, itch, and crack within minutes. Most unmedicated lip balms were no good because my lips would still itch or burn. Only the menthol/camphor lip balms (carmex, blistex white ointment, etc) offered relief.

On another forum I saw a suggestion that it could be yeast or fungal related. The suggestion I found was to use half OTC cortisone cream and clotrimazole or miconazole cream. I went with the OTC lotrimin cream that has clotrimazole.

The redness and itching actually began to clear up in 1-2 days. I continued the treatment for about a week, and the problem cleared up for good. That was 5-6 years ago.

Ps. I had previously tried a tolnaftate cream to no effect, which leads me to believe the problem was probably yeast and not fungal.

hey everyone,

its reassuring to hear that im not the only one with this issue (although i am sorry that this is happening to you too!).  im am in my junior year of uni and started getting cold sores around a year ago, i've only had 3 big outbreaks but i would go home and miss a week or two of class because i wouldnt want anyone to see/judge me and feared the impact on my future dating life at school if people knew i had herpes ... after all i still tend to judge myself :(. After 2 outbreaks i talked to my doctor who gave me valtrex which seems pretty standard for herpes treatment but for about 5 or 6 months now i feel like i have a constant tingle, itch, little bumps, whatever, on the outside corner of my lip and i feel like my life is controlled by my lip. i was so paranoid i took the 2 gram dose of valtrex 3 times in just over a month (2 of the times there never ended up being an outbreak). i sometimes put on abreva if i get really paranoid and that seems to help the symptoms for maybe a few hours, usually as the day goes on i get more and more worried about it and am constantly running to a mirror to check on it. that happens to me everyyyyy day. so i have been thinking about asking my doctor for valtrex daily or suppressive treatment even though it is usually for genital herpes or if you get more than like 6 cold sores a year... has anyone tried valtrex daily? does it help with this? i know its a serious medication to go on because of paranoia but i cant deal with it, i just want to go one day without having to cancel my plans or have a minor panic attack because of this! also i have been taking L-Lysine daily (1000mg x3 daily)... and i have no idea if its done anything haha.

thanks for all the comments though its my first time posting but i always read and feel a bit better knowing this isn't something only i'm struggling with.

GOOD LUCK!
