Hi everyone,

I have the same story as everyone. I am having my full thyroid removed on July 25th. My thyroid is functioning normally too, but my neck is huge, and I too have several nodules. I am kind of worried about the surgery, since I have never had surgery before. How long is everyone in the hospital? I have a 6 month old baby and just returned back to work from materity leave. I am wondering too... How much time did you need off work? After reading some of the storys I am worried too about the side effects. I feel fine right now, and hope to feel good after the surgery too. The few people I know who have had it done, have felt fine after surgery. Some have even said they felt better.

Hiya fellow sufferers,
I had my thyroid out on Monday 30th June 08, although I had previously had a partial thyroidectomy in 2001, the lumps came back and the rest had to come out.
I was sent home after 3 days in hospital and the evening I came home felt like I was going to die. I was in a fever, dizzy, feeling sick, and very weak and thought I was going to pass out. My husband phoned the hospital who had just sent me home and they said perhaps I should phone my GP or go to accident and emergency. What a joke! I decided to take a calcuim tablet and a thyroxine tablet and hope for the best.
After 2 or 3 hours I felt a bit better, but I feel that I should not have been home so soon.
I have had a calcuim test done, yesterday, which was 2.3 so things are getting better.
My stitches come out on monday and I get the pathology on the lumps next thursday, so fingers crossed!
I have noted down some of the advice given and am grateful for finding this site.
Thanks to all.

Well, I had my surgery last Fri (July 4th) and so far so good. I was in hospital until Sun. My vocal cords are perfect although if I talk too much my voice gets a little weak. I actually spoke to my Mom on the phone a couple of hours after leaving the recovery room and she couldn't believe how good I sounded. My calcium levels are completely normal. I have minor tenderness and swelling at the incision site, there is also some tightness but extra strength tylenol relieves it. I have been gently stretching my neck several times a day. I feel great.

I'm having a nodule Biopsied on thursday, I'm not Hypo or Hyper. They're checking for cancer. I'm terrified.
I don't want to get fat, or deppressed, or have to take pills forever. I've always been really healthy. never had anything major happen to me. I've been crying all day.

Hello,
I have a suspicious nodule on my thyroid, then a cyst on top of the nodule. I am scheduled for a surgical consult. They are most likely going to completely remove my thyroid. After reading all of these posts, I am pretty scared about the aftermath of the procedure. I am only 20, and have never had surgery before. Does anyone have any advice for me? Any words of encouragement would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I had my thyroid removed on July 4th, I cam e through it just fine, no horrible side effects. My calcium and vocal cords are fine. After the surgery the pain was almost non-existent and aside from muscle tightness which has now gone it was easy. My incision is about 3 inches long and was completely closed a week after surgery when I removed the bandage. I have no stitches on the outside, the was some minor bruising and swelling but nothing bad. Over the last couple of days I have had the feeling of a lump in my throat but if I take tylenol it goes away, so it must be residual swelling inside, it is not painful and does not affect my breathing or eating. I was in hospital for 48 hours and was able to eat normal foods the morning after surgery. I was put on thyroid hormone the morning after the surgery and I seem to be adjusting fine, however my specialist says it can take up to 2 months for the hormone reserves to drop.

HI everyone! I just had surgery on July 16th and had my whole thyroid removed. I had a multi nodular thyroid that just appreared out of the middle of no where in April. I gave birth to a baby boy in January not sure if it was related or not. I had several biopsies done (which I think are way worse than the surgery). I elected to have the surgery done so I did not have to go through the biopsies anymore and did not want to wait around to see if cancer was going to appear one day or not. I know several people that the biopsies came back normal, but after surgery they were tested again and came back cancerous. So I did not want to chance it.

The surgery went well, the pain was minimal. The biggest complaint I had was being hot and how it hurt to swallow. So far I have been struggling with being hot and cold. My emotions seem to be a little out of whack also. A few other symptoms have been a headache, tiredness and my voice is a little hoarse. I am sure it will be awhile before the medicine is regulated. I also have co-workers that are on a natural thyroid medication that has worked better for them than the synthroid.

Hi I am a 43 yr old mother of 3. I had my thyroid totally removed October of 06. It took me 1 1/2 yrs to feel like my self again. Let me tell you i noticed some changes in my body back in 2001. My body would get really cold in the morning and night heck all day. When i say cold i mean i could feel the cold down to my bones. Now granted i am a women who all my life grew up in Sunny California and would leave the house without a jacket. Everyone else would need one, but not me. That was my first sympton and i chocked it up to the flu and flu shoots. Well, then i noticed that my joints would ache and i could not get rid of a plantars faciatis. As the years went on i begin to notice that my hair would not grow and i could not lose weight and my period was very irregular. I chocked that up to "Oh well, i am getting old, my metabolism is slowing down and maybe i'm in the begining stages of Pre menopause". I went to the doctor and they continued to take blood and do test but of course everything continue to come up negative. In April of 2005 I noticed that I had a Lump on the right side of my neck. I went to the dr. and of course more test, everytime negative was the response. I told the doctor he has got to do something because i am not feeling any better. I worked at a very stressful job at the time and i am a go getter and couldn't figure out why my job was stressing me i love a serious challange. Little did i know what was really going on. My dr sent me over to a endo and there they did a test ( biopsi)where they pulled some fluid from the lump. Test came back maglignant. I had cancer. Not one time did i panic because i knew that i had to be strong for my kids. I deceided that i was going to bet this. Now during this time there were two other women that i saw frequently and they were going thru the same thing. What a coincidence! I saw that their dr. was going through different drugs. I wanted that bug out. I was not going to let it take me down. I continued to fight. I found all the right numbers to call and talk to all the right people so that i could have me surgery as soon as possible. surgery was a sucess. The first couple of days i was in the hospital. My calcium level was really low. I had to get that up to good numbers in order to be released from the hospital. I will return to continue my story...........

same situation as alot of you...46 yr old mom..thyroid levels are fine but I have a lump which was biopsied and came back inconclusive. The drs are leaving it up 2 me 2 decide if I want just the affected lobe removed or the whole thing...My sis in law had hers removed as a teen and is fine. I worked very hard to lose 60 pounds and the last thing I want is to gain it back because of this. What do you think? Maybe leave it up to the surgeon once he goes in and sees what he's dealing with? My husband has incurable prostrate cancer at 45...so I really can't be sick too. any advice would be appreciated...thanks!

Well - I'm 48 and freaking out now after seeing all of this! I had a routine blood test done in APril and ended up having 4 more for the 4 following months. Had a thyroid scan about a month ago because although the thyroid gland was not englarged, Ihave nodules! I started reading - a little knowledge can be dangerous! I have an appt with a specialist next Tue and don't know what to think now. Cross everything for me - figners toes, everything. I love my life and thought of cancer - having lost both parents to (non-thyroid cancer) just won't rest with me! Roll on Tueday!

I noticed a lump in my neck near end of Feb. Saw a Dr. in March I think and he did blood work and found nothing. So he order a sonogram. I was then referred to an ENT Dr. He did a fine needle aspiration and did not fine any cancer cells. I had the lump removed because it was 4.2 cm and the biospy done in the hospital showed no cancer cells. But the total biopsy done during the week did show non-invasive carcimona cells. Since I had small nodules on the other side the Dr. suggested removing that one to. So I had the first lump and thyroid rempved August 11th and the other side removed Sept 8th. No problems so far. Had no pain after surgery from the incision at all. Have not started taken medication yet but feel great. No depression or tireness . Did have the hair problem at first now my hair is manageable again. I have a great Dr. and knew what he was doing and I have no regrets. Only wished both were taken in the first surgery. My age is 58.

Well. I am now over 3 months post op after a total thyroidectomy in July. I saw my specialist on Sept 25 and my thyroid hormone levels are completely normal. I have been on 0.1mg of thyroxine since the day after the surgery and my dose will remain the same. I feel great and am so happy that I had the surgery. With regards to the incision, it has faded a lot, I still get the odd nerve twinge but nothing serious and it is short lived.

I came to read some of these posts and wanted to give a more positive reply from a different perspective. My mother and I have been watched closely for years as we had thyroid nodules. Mine was coninuing to grow when hers was UNSPECIFIED on biopsy (as 90 percent of unclear ones usually are cancer) and she had just recovered from breast cancer, so they recommended her removal of thyroid.

When they got inside they confirmed cancer and then revealed her parthyroid had two tumors on it the size of golf balls (doctors don't check para symptoms all the time). So, she had those removed also. Prior to this surgery, she was depressed, tired, hair loss, weight gain, etc.... it is 3 months later and she swears she got her life back. She is on more meds than I can count, but she is getting under control with calcium and has even lost 25 lbs and she looks great. I can only say make sure you have a good surgeon... that is key. One that is prepared to handle para if they have to, many do have para tumors when they get in.

Yesterday the doc tells me that my thyroid nodule is growing and is a goiter sitting on my trachea, because the cancer is in my family and now it is starting to hurt, I am scheduled to remove it. I am saying my prayers that my moms situation will be mine, I can't imagine being any more tired than I am right now.... I know several others who said it was one of the better things they did (to remove it).

Just wanted to give some positives about it. I will repost after my surgery and let you know what happens.
