i had my thyroid partially removed about two months ago. i was happy cuz i thought i was going to gain wieght but i gained about six pounds and seem to have stopped there. i have been put on medication and am going to see my doc on the 21st of this month. this thyroid crapt is complicated and annoying.
I had a total thyroid removal 10 years ago, initially it took about 6 months to feel OK from the surgery, since then, my hair has thined, my bones have become bigger, I don't feel that strong (I used to be able to lift a horse, now only a small cow) hehe. My eye sight has depreciated, my body swells up like a balloon, I have good days, bad days, awful days, and fantastic days. I tried to adjust my own levels some years back with my Levoxyl and really should not have done that, my hair fell out in clumps :-( . My endochronologist said I would never be "normal" I have 3 of the 4 para-thoirids one is expected to have, they couldn't find the other one, so that when south. Other than all this you have to allow your body to heal. I have had 3 kids they are 28,27 and 24. Make the most of your life, do small things to make yourself feel good. A lot of it is emotional too... I have had a lot of surgeries because of the dysfunction of my thyroid but life is what YOU make it, not what your Thyroid, or your abscent Thyroid makes it.... Be a Winner over these physical ailments. You will feel better if you think better. God Bless!
I had my thyroid removed 2 years ago after several years with Hashimoto's and nodes and a goiter. I was having biopsy's every three months and the stupid thing was still growing despite a daily huge dosage of synthroid.
Then surgery alieviated the symptoms of the enlarged gland (difficulty swallowing and feeling like I couldn't breathe) but recently I've been noticing mood swings that make me not want to be around myself, hair loss, dry skin, tachycardia, vitamin D deficiency, severe high blood pressure, and mild depression.
Up until now I would have said it was the best thing I've ever done for myself but now I'm not sure. My doctor is trying to regulate my meds but in the meantime I'm miserable and so is my poor husband!

I just found that I will be having my whole thyriod removed. I see all this symptoms that every else is having after the sugery. All these, severe weight gain, depression, super tired, just not being able to function, I have them now. I have been on synthriod for 4 years. Does the sugery make these problems worse? I'm worried now because I couldnt handle it if they get worse.
I had a large nodule that had to be removed along with 1/2 of my thyroid 7 months ago.
My brother had Thyroid cancer and my doc said it was too risky to leave the nodule there --
At first I felt great and lost weight. But about 4th month post op I started having hypo symptoms. My feet hurt so badly i could hardly walk. I was very shocked because my ENT said I would probably NOT need meds.
I was lethargic and gained 17 lbs back that I had lost. I felt doped and unclear in my speaking and thinking.
but, without the nodule I wasn't choking on food.
Now I am on levothyroxine and doing so-so. I have lost 5 lbs and my feet don't hurt. That is very good.
It has been a month. But my energy level is not back to normal.
I am still tired! I also can't sleep. I used to stay up til 11+ reading/tv, and got up around 6:30. Now I go to bed by 9:30 or 10 and wake up by 4:30 or 5 with anxiety and cannot go back to sleep.
my sleep patterns are all messed up. I would say if you have a large growth that is impacting your life then you have to have it out. I know that WHEN you take the meds is important and also avoid certain foods and other supplements. it is all very complicated.
My brother who does not have a thyroid due to surgery has been on synthroid 18 years. Just recently he added bran cereal to his breakfast thinking he was being healthy. But then he noticed his levels were dropping. He found out that bran and thyroid meds DON"T mix. So now he takes med at bedtime.
That did nto work for me, because I was unsure when my stomach was empty. In the morning didn't work eitehr because I want coffee or tea when I get up. So i am taking it at 2 am when I first get up to go to bathroom.
This way I don't notice the nausea. My appetite also changed in the first two weeks. I had little appetite and junk food had no appeal. but now I feel more hungry and Have to adjust to a low carb diet.
Everything is a challenge basically if you are taking these meds. hang in there as I am going to do.

Hi I had a total thyroidectomy in Nov 05 and I still have the depression, tingling, mood swings and not to mention the weight gain. My doctor still has not gotten my medication right, so I am changing doctors so that I can try to get some relief. :'( :'( :'(
unlike any of above. I felt totally fine after the surgery. the second day of the surgery, I was out of the hospital. A week after the surgery, doc removed all the cover on my neck so my neck could expose to the air and breath. except the first two weeks of low Cal. and some numbness, I barely feel nothing. I even went to virginia beach the third week after the surgery (no drinking though). now I'm waiting for the radiation. but it's kinda of late because my current doc cannot find me anappointment. So I decided to go find a facility myself, starting from tomorrow. BTW, I did the surgery in NYC, but back to the country I live now, there really no decent doc here... my current doc, he had graduated MD for 9 years, and hasn't done any of the thyroid removal sergery... gosh!!and, I'm a 25 -year old...
WHo did you go to in NYC if you don't mind me asking? I live near there and I have a friend who is looking at thyriod surgery. your answer would really help. Thanks!
I had my thyroid removed on August 27th, 2009. There was a complication that night when a clamped artery broke free and I began to bleed internally. The Lord was watching over me though and my surgeon was still at the hospital. I had to go back into the OR and be put under once again. I am worried that my voice box has been damaged. I cannot talk very loud at all. I have been asked if I slept with the window open and the night air had affected me. But otherwise I feel great. i have had some problems with hair loss, but it was no different when I had my thyroid. At least I am not so bone dead tired any more. I am still a little weak though.
has anyone gone through this with their voice box? I have difficulty with words that start with vowels. And at time some of the strangest noises (like growls) come unexpectedly out of my throat. Does anyone perhaps know of something healing to drink. I am having a little bit of trouble choking now. But I think that is because I am breathing a little when I swallow.
Please give me any suggestions about how to urge my voice to come back to me. Thanks in advance

I had my thyroid removed totally on Aug. 8, 2009, It was not to bad of a surgery, I was home with in 48 hours. I had Hashimoto's disease for more than four years and was treating it with leverthyroxine, which was not really working because my thyroid was so big. I had a biopsy done ever year on the biggest nodual that I had and I had plenty. It always came out negative for anything except Hashimoto's.
The surgery took more than two hours and my ENT was surprised, he stated that I must have been in a lot of pain because I had so much inflamation and everything was connecting to my other tissues in my neck. After surgery I was put on 150 MCg of the leversthyroxine and I have both good days and bad, I guess that is the price you pay for having total removal of the thyroid. I have noticed that I am losing my hair a lot more than I did befor the surgery, still tired but I know it will take time to adjust to the medice, also when I went to my post op appointment, I keep surprising my ENT by the size of of my thyroid and know when then found a 4cm cancer called Papillary carcinoma that was going inside another nodual that was not being checked with a needle biopsy, which I was told by my ENT that since it was under 10 cm that their is nothing for me to worry about cuz it doen not start to spread till 10 or more.
I would recomend this surgery to people who have Hashimoto's or a multi nodual thyroid because you never know what is really growing inside, and if I did not have a ENT that listened to me I probly would still have my thyroid right know. I was just tired of all the appt. for the check ups.
:) :) :)

I finally found this site and thank God I did. I now realize that I am not alone and I am not going crazy. I had a total thyroid ectiomy, parathyroid glands all removed and some neck muscle removed be cause of papilary carcinoma. I have been struggling now for 2 years, I think I felt better when I had cancer. I am doing everything I am suppose to, i take my meds at the right time, I eat properly, no coffee, no smoking, i have one coke a week, I eat organic foods as much as I can afford, I love water,so i drink alot, and I try to excercise as often as I have energy for it. BUT … I can sleep for days, sometimes I have to take a nap after work just so I have the energy to fix dinner. I have extreme pain in my feet, acne and mood swings like a teenager, weight gain, bloating as if I was carrying triplets, hair loss, cold all the time, sad, crying, anxiety, stress, pain all over as if my body is one big bruise, and the list goes on.
My doctor says that my levels are normal and there is nothing wrong. But I am not this person, I use to run marathons for fun, I was the motivator for everyone around me. I loved life and was happy to start each day no matter what the weather was like. I preferred life when I had cancer. How sad is that.
I have done everything the docs tell me, I went into counseling and got on anti-depression medicine, found a nutritionist, follow all their orders and still nothing seems to help. I have gained 75lbs since surgery and I can my weight difference can flucuate 25lbs from one day to the next
Last night I missed the wedding of a very dear friend because i could not find an outfit that looked good because of my weight gain and my acne is beyond cover up, I started crying uncontrollably, had an anxiety attact and then fell asleep. I am so very frustrated and do not know what to do. Can I get my cancerous thyroid back life was better then.
I do not have great health insurance and because of the economy I have been laid off 2x since Dec 2008, I have a job now but it is not as stable, so i worry about taking off time for more doc appts.
I was thinking about trying a naturapath. Any advice from anyone, I'm willing to try anything at this point, This can't be what the rest of my life will be like.
BTW: I am female, just turned 40, 2 years since surgery and went thru 2 rounds of radio-active iodine treatment. I am on 150 levothyroxine, i take 1250 calcium carbonate 2xs a day and .5mcg of calcitriol 2x's a day

You know, I don't want to tell anyone how to 'suck eggs', but there is a massive link between thyroid problems and adrenal problems. A lot of the postings I read makes me think that, although the thyroid issue has technically been solved by surgery or whatever, the adrenal problems are as bad as ever. Have a look at this website: and then the links it has to other sites. Maybe some of you will find some helpful stuff. I hope so, anyway.

I had my Thyroid totally removed and feel awful. Mood swings, weight loss, depression, tingling, depression.
I'm sorry to hear that! Did your doctor prescribe anything for you to deal with the mood issues or anything? Let me know if you got anything like that.
I have graves disease and will be getting my thyroid removed soon.I am a practitioner of alternative medicine and at first the endocrinologist put me on propranolol and tapazol.I had dropped weight before treatment ,loosing alot of my hard earned muscle mass, everyone was noticing.Tapazol made me gain it back, being also a trainer I am in great shape and hated taking blood pressure pills as I know the side effects.Well w/a protocol I put myself on I was able to go off the propranolol, and I normalized my blood work w/1 or 11/2 tapazol per day vrs 3x daily.I feel great but worried about the future as I have already broken 8 teeth spending over 50,000$ on implants etc over the past 8 yrs being undiagnosed, signaling osteoporosis down the road =so we be getting surgery in a month. The doc said I wouldnt gain weight but I am concerned as fitness is a big part of my life.Being in the field of health makes a difference as I dont feel like these other people who have made posts, please advise as I will be scheduling in the next few days for the surgery. Thanks a million.Angie dagrosa
