I'm 19, day 8, it's 5:30 in the morning and I'm searching the web in a panic hoping I don't have to wake my mom up to drive me to the ER. I have never experienced this kind of pain before and it's SO difficult to swallow, let alone fight the urge not to cough. I woke up not too long ago to take my pain medicine(it's been such a hassle waking up EVERY 4 hours during the night the past 8 days to take this distguisting medicine that makes me cringe/want to vomit)<--sorry I was rambling. But when I woke up not long ago I couldn't fight the urge to cough anymore and once I started, I couldn't stop. I think I coughed up one of my scabs but then swallowed it along with the other gunk/mucus I had coughed up. I've been spitting blood for a little now and am nervous since I'm unsure about how much I can spit up without it becoming dangerous...any answers?? This SUCKS.
Hey there, im on day 11, and what got me through the days is baby cereal. Not the best tasting but it's really easy to get down
Hi 31 female this is day 5 of my recovery. It hurts to breath, drink.or eat. My tongue and my ears hurt worse than anything. What I have found that helps is to take the liquid meds right before you eat. It will burn like hell but the shock from it will numb you enough to where you can eat. Popcicles, smothies, slushy, powered all burn. I have been drinking lots of cold water and eating Luke warm creamy soups. Mashed potatoes and pudding work as well. I haven't had any scabs fall of yet but boy I don't wish this on my worse enemy. As anyone been able to do.anything about the bad taste in your mouth?
I'm 45 years old and got my tonsils and anoids removed. It was the worst pain I've ever felt but it's day 9 and I'm feeling a lot better. I spit my right tonsil scab out today. It was gross but I feel better and know that I'm I'm on my way to recovery. I would put plugs in my ears when I drank because it helped with the pain. I would pour honey down my throat to soothe my throat, really works. I gargled with salt water every night before bed. After every meal I brushed my teeth, followed by Listerine gargle. I cried and behaved like a baby the first day, but if you don't follow the instructions exactly, then it will take you longer to heal and feel better.
Hi, im currently day 6 including op day and my throat feels horrible! Im a 17 year old girl too and was wondering how long it took for you to completely recover? I think the scabs have started to come off as im experiencing a different burning sensation in my throat now but i cant really see whats going on back there! I have completely lost my voice as it hurts too much to talk, i just want to be better now as im feeling really depressed not being able to eat normally (ive also lost 9 pounds already and i feel like skin and bones)
I'm on day 5 and the pain is getting worse - wondering if it will ever end....
The first couple of days was easy as you are zoned out from all the drugs. For me the ear pain is the worst I can not even lift my head from my pillow even with taking the pain killers

Hi I had my tonsils out 9 days ago, I'm 18. Day 4 was be worst as I threw up and was shaking and in extreme pain, I almost went to the er but decided to tough it out. Day 8 sucked, so yesterday, I wasn't nauseous but I had heartburn the last couple days and and acid like feeling in my stomach and I woke up in a coughing fit and and threw up. Now I keep waking up in coughing fits. I haven't been taking my liquid prescribed medication as I think that was the reason to my heartburn. I've been taking a lot of menthol cough drops and now I'm trying green tea with a ton of honey. I'm gonna stick to chicken noodle soup for the next couple days and see what happens. I think the coughing is a sign the scabs are coming off but it sucks. A couple times I coughed up (or threw up) small pieces of tissue (it's white like the scabs). However I noticed after I cough up these small pieces my throat feels better. I'm not sure but I'm hoping these scabs come off and I get better soon. I'm getting tired of being bed ridden, it's been 9 days.
I had to stop using my meds the doc gave me because they would make me throw up too much so I am now just taking an extra strength Tylenol and an ibuprofen makes me not nauseous and helps with pain
21 f here, its day 6 of my post op recovery and just reading what everyone has posted about their recovery has scared me for the coming days. But its day 6 and I've gotta say I'm one of the lucky ones I guess, no pain at all..only when i first wake up there's a bit of pain trying to drink water but that's it. I've been off my pain meds for the last two days, so by day 4 I was off my pain meds completely. I have a high pain tolerance so it usually doesn't bother me but I'm just taking Advil for the minimal amounts of pain. Been eating and drinking water just fine, actually been eating regular food since I've been home...just takes me a while to finish but I do finish it. The scabs I'm not to sure how they're looking right now, too afraid to look. One thing I am worried about are the scabs coming off, and will they come off any day now if they're not already off? I just don't want to be in pain when they do fall off and for me to be at work when they do.
I'm actually feeling well, my voice is a bit weird, sounds nasal-y I guess. But yeah, it was a very fast recovery for me, I'm going to be returning to work tomorrow.
One thing I did do was take gravol with my pain meds. Doc gave me Tylenol 3's, and I already knew from previous times that they made me really nauceous so i'd take a gravol with them as well, that helped tons because right after I'd take them I'd fall asleep. When I woke up, it'd be time to take them again, so it was a cycle of sleeping for me in the first few days. All I drank was water, and tons of it. It's only day 6 and I've already finished a whole 5 gallon Culligan water jug PLUS half of it and its only day 6. I also had a humidifier with me in my room, slept with it on through the night while I slept in a seated position. That's really all I did for my recovery, though I'm still recovering and I don't know what else there is in store for me for the next couple days, I'm hopeful.

Hi I'm 24 yo female. On day 4 post surgery. Day 1 and 2 I was groggy from the anaesthetic. Day 3 was very painful and it reduced me to tears. I also slept throughout the day as it helped get over the pain. I recommend sleeping sat up. Day 4 the pain is easing a little. It's mostly in my ears and when I swallow. The main thing is to constantly drink - ice cold water or apple juice has worked for me. Eat normal foods too.. It hurts but it helps the healing process. Hope this helps someone. Worst experience o have ever had..
Just had mines taking out last Tuesday 7/7/15 and me myself have heard a lot of horror stories as for sleeping with your mouth open try a surgical mask and try sleeping with a humidifier if you have one and try to drink liquids throughout the night.
Hello, I know this is old but just in case someone sees this I'd think my story be pretty helpful. I had my tonsils out 8 days ago, day 1-2 perfectly fine, I was eating mashed potatoes and rice, day 3-4 pain started creeping up I started eating a lot more ice cream and Popsicles. Day 5-7 pain extremely intense, wouldn't put anything down my throat, I didn't eat or drink for those days, nor did I take my pain medication. Day 6-7 a scab had fallen off, I didn't bleed or cough it out, I just swallowed it and it tasted horrible. But because I could feel how one side of my throat was without a scab and the otherside was with a scab it bothered me SO much. So much discomfort and taste was horrible, I didn't want to eat or drink because every time I swallowed I could taste the scab and feel the texture of it. The morning of day 7 I woke up choking and spit out multiple blood clots, bright red, once I stopped my mom decided she should take me to the hospital as I was getting ready to go I all of a sudden felt weak, I then was beginning to faint. I've fainted before in the past but never this bad, I turned pale, my eyes were rolling back, I started to get very sweaty and eventually unconscious. My mom called 911 as soon as the paramedics came I became conscious but very weak, I was proped up against a wall and I threw up black blood (which means I digested some blood). In the process of spitting out blood clots the scab on the other side got lose and I eventually swallowed it. On the way to the hospital the paramedics out an IV in me and I was feeling much better, once I got to the hospital they gave me, morphine, anti nausea and steroids (for inflammation) intervenously. As of today I think that scab came off too early because every time I eat or drink I get a sharp pain that I can't stand only on that side. It's still better than having a scab that I could taste though. This tonsillectomy has been the worst experience ever, extremely painful, extremely uncomfortable, I hope none of you have to go through this
Alot of you are saying you wish you had been warned how much pain you were going to be in, well, my doctor and his nurses warned me it was almost like they were trying to scare me into not getting it done which i found really weird. I am on day 4 and im coughing up scabs it seems like everyday is worse than the previous one. I would love to be able to eat real food again but i can hardly open my mouth and my throat burns when i eat.
I had my tonsils out 10 days ago. Last night I woke up to a bad couging spell only to realize that my mouth was full of blood I ran to the bathroom coughing up blood and scabs. Today I woke up and my throat does not hurt as bad. I was able to eat something without taking pain medication. For the first time since I had my tonsils out I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I am still real tired and not to eager to do anything but REST.
I'm 22 and on day 12 post-op. Day 5 was when my pain started worsening too -- days 5-10 were the worst and I was absolutely miserable. I couldn't eat anything, not even jello, days 6-10, nor could I drink anything other than water. The worst pain I've experienced is when I wake up from sleeping. As others have mentioned, the surgery forces you to sleep with your mouth open, drying you out a lot. The first time it happened to me, I woke up and took a drink of water and as soon as I swallowed it felt like my throat was just being ripped right down the middle. I haven't gotten more than 24 hours of sleep in the past week. When I do sleep now, I set an alarm for every 15 or 20 minutes so that I can have some water and avoid the pain of waking up after an hour or more. I am doing a lot better now, yesterday (day 11) was the first day I could actually eat and I had pancakes. My stomach was very happy as was I because although it was still uncomfortable the pain was not nearly as bad. My scabs aren't finished falling off so I'm not sure when that will be over, but they started coming off about day 7 or 8 so hopefully soon. I hope this is helpful to someone. It's a horrible surgery so good luck to anyone having it!!! And congrats to all the survivors hahaha
