I have found that warmer foods tend to do better with pain than colder foods and drinks. I generally liked to drink warm very diluted chocolate milk. To help the pain swallowing I developed a technique where you press your chin against your chest( as close as possible) and stick the tip of your tounge on your two front teeth then swallow. To swallow harder foods such as bread try to take it with water and chew it 50 times literally to try to get the food as small as possible then you close your eyes and brace for the pain. After 5-10 swallows you will be used to the trauma of swallowing and should be fine u till you need to eat again hours later. If your are prescribed Percocet try to take it with full stomach or take it with yogurt before you eat your meal.
This will help reduce naseua and help the medicine kick in better. Use a hot pad on neck if pain is too unbearable. It hurts as I am only on day 5 and it will probably get worse. Just remember why you had the op done and push through it. Good luck to all.

I'm a 17 year old girl and I am currently on day 7. From days 1-5 post op the pain was indescribable, and the mornings were the absolute worst. Trying to get food down me in the morning in order to take medication was nothing but hell. I'm on Ibuprofen and Co-Codamol, within the first few days I would take my medication, and it would knock me right out, so I could just sleep for hours upon end. But now, when I take it, it's seems to only work for 1-2 hours and then the pain is back, and by "pain" I mean, headache, constant ear ache, and throat (obviously). After 7 days, I feel a lot better in myself, but the one thing that is stopping me from going out anywhere, or doing anything what so ever that involves leaving this house is... The scabs. They are the worst part of this whole experience. I don't want to talk to anyone, nor do I want people to come within a meter of me. The smell that the scabs give off are foul, it literally smells like shite (from what I have been told from my family) and I take their word for it. Now, I understand that I can't help this, and it's all a part of recovering but it's awful, the smell, THE TASTE it leaves at the back of my throat physically makes me feel sick. I'm continuously having to drink flavoured drinks to get rid of the taste purely because drinking water is like drinking c**p. Some may say I'm over exaggerating but I've been self conscious about my breath for several years and I rarely got bad breath anyway. I just want to know how long after the op do these bastard scabs go for good. I want to actually live my life again. So sick of this. If you're someone around the age of 13-19 who struggles from tonsilitis regularly, it is something you will get within your teen years, if you feel like you can get through the pain, I know I probably could have thinking back, but if you feel like you can live through it then do so, please don't get this operation unless 100% necessary. Seriously wouldn't want to inflict this pain/struggle on anyone.

Hi I am 15 and I'm in day 7 from my tonsil and adenoid surgery. Boy let me tell ya it is not fun. Day 1-4 sucks I stayed in the bed and slept as much as I could cause the pain was just so bad I could only drink. Drink as much as you possibly can I could not stress that enough Popsicles burnt my throat day 5 and 6 I could start felling some progress and felling better but not much I was able to eat some I ate a half of order of frys from pals and the cheese off of a Peaice of pizza the pepperonia was too spicy!! I have to keep a spit bottle beside me everywhere I go from having to spit all the time. The pain mess really do help I'm not having to take them during the day anymore just at night when I sleep cause that's where you have the most pain on the night of day 6 I spit up a scab and I'm pretty sure it came from my adenoids cause I was trying to clear my nose when it came into my mouth and I sure could breath and felt a whole lot better after it came out but it was really gross and actually just a few Minuntes ago I was doing the same thing and another scan came out looked just like the one from last night. I hope there's not more cause that was kinda big and gross!!! But I can not stress how important it is to stay hydrated just try and eat the best that you can and drink pleanty of fluids. I am still having pain and I'm not able to eat fully what I want to get but I hope I can soon!! Just stick to the soft stuff and drink fluids and Popsicles and ice cream and slushes. I wish you the best of luck and I hope you done have as much pain as I have cause I know I have felt like pure hell the past seven days from pain!!

You're not alone I promise! I'm 20 and on day 7 and it's the worst pain of my life. They say to keep drinking ice water and Powerade but I can barely do it. I haven't coughed at all yet, but I do feel like there's something stuck in my throat and I'm pretty sure it's the scabs getting ready to come off. Idk about you but I find a lot of relief laying on my side. I also found this tea called Throat Coat, that works wonders. Let it cool off for like half an hour to 45 minutes, or until it's room temp and drink it. I honestly felt like my throat was back to normal while it was going down. What pain meds are you on? Your dr should give you something else if the one you have now makes you sick!

I am 25, on day 7... I am so sorry for everyone having such a bad recovery. Although it is not easy by any means and deff not comfortable it is not unbearable. Today sucks a lot because I can feel the scabs and it feels like there is something caught in my throat. I am very lucky and have no thrown up (knock on wood) I am able to eat French toast and soft bread things since day 2. Sugary things create a lot of mucous and that drives me crazy. Before my surgery I was terrified because I was reading everyone's horror stories. Everyone is different and heals differently, if you need the surgery just do it and get it over with. The light is at the end of the tunnel. I can already breathe better! My advise is don't look back there! Lol! I haven't! Drink mad amounts of water as soon as you wake up from surgery! I also drank a lot of apple juice. That was easier to get down than water in the beginning but then started to produce the mucous so I had to stop. I was excited to lose weight but I've been eating so that didn't happen hahah. I just can't wait for these scabs to come off so I can sleep and feel better already. It's long and not fun but it will help you feel better so don't listen to the horror stories!!!!

Hello all 21 year old female had a tonsillectomy and I am on day 6 counting the surgery day. WOW this has been quite a roller coaster ride to say the least. Days 1-2 were fairly easy compared to what was coming next. On day 2 though I was sick from the medicine because I could not eat. The vomiting was violent and forceful and came out of my nostrils as well which was extremely uncomfortable and hard to breathe. My mom called the doctor and I got anti nausea medicine which was such a relief!! If anesthesia or some medicines make you sick I HIGHLY recommend asking for nausea medicine beforehand. Days 3-5 were incredibly miserable. I drank a lot of water which was incredibly difficult, and I spent a lot of time crying, regretting the surgery. I would sit with a jello or pudding cup in front of me and cry from the pain it caused to even choke that down. I did not eat a lot these few days and ran on little sleep because of the discomfort. The main issue I have been having during this whole recovery process is the "scalloped tongue" basically for anyone unfamiliar with this term: The tongue is completely sore making it difficult to swallow, and the sides of your tongue have your teeth marking carved out on the sides from the swelling. I could manage throat pain, but this tongue pain is absolutely horrendous. I don't know if my tongue is like this because of the swelling or the clamp that was used on my tongue during the procedure but that is the most annoying part of the recovery for me. I'm ending day 6 and today was a low pain day, but at times I get a sharp pain in my throat which feels like swallowing a sharp potato chip whole, and trying to swallow it down each time you eat or drink. I highly recommend ensure protein drinks and using a humidifier. Hydrate often! Nothing is worse than a dry throat and feeling like you have swallowed a cactus. I managed to eat wonton soup from the local Chinese restaurant. If you are reading and are familiar with this soup I say YES. The noodles are incredibly soft and if your having tongue issues like myself, requires minimal chewing. Not to mention, when you go a few days without food and finally eat, it is quite heavenly. Craving tacos and stuffed crust pizza at this point in my recovery. Waiting for my scabs to fall off, honestly at this point I could care less if them come out by coughing, sneezing, vomiting......I am so ready to see that light at the end of the tunnel. But I would certainly recommend this to anyone with recurring strep, looking forward to a winter with no sickness! Goodluck everyone! You can get through this.

I can barely get down water and Gatorade. When I do, I have to hold my nose and lean my head back before swallowing. If not, it will come out of my nose. I've only eaten applesauce and this is just to take the pain meds. I'm on day 4 and I'm just ready to get the recovery over with. I never knew that it was going to be so painful and uncomfortable. I'm 26 and having a hard time taking care of my three kids (6, 2 and 4 mos.).

Hi all. 25 f, surgery was exactly a week ago. Prescribed lortab pills to take every 6hrs and no antibiotic. I believe I had them lasered off. I was warned not to have dairy for at least 5 days due to phlegm and excessive mucus happening. Sleep at an incline for the first week, propped up with many pillows or you may choke on saliva or uvula!!

First day was a cakewalk, the anesthesia and iv medicine does a good job at keep pain to a 1/10 vomited once on the way home, to be expected though. Ate ice pops and that's all.

Day 2- tongue hurt like crazy from clamp, uvula swollen triple the size and everything in the mouth hurt. Tolerated pancakes, baby food, ice pops, Gatorade, tried egg but it got stuck in throat. and iced neck often. Ear pain starts. Lack of sleep begins.

Days 3-5 ice neck and ears nonstop from pain. Can't eat much but frozen foods, broth and mashed potatoes. Tired and hungry and in pain. Not much sleep and pain at all time high whenever waking up, lots of crying.

Days 6-7 Worst pain in my life, warm compress non stop and no more cold beverages or food is tolerated. Only lukewarm Powerade, jello, mashed potatoes and broths

I'll update as I continue to heal:)

Also, not able to speak, it's better to only whisper if need to speak and don't over do it. Stay in bed and watch Netflix until you recover, and I only bathed instead of showering for fear of fall from getting dizzy on hxc pain pills and lack of protein/nutrients

I am 32, and had my tonsils removed 6 days ago.  I think my fear was far worse than any actual pain I experienced.  Granted, it's only been 6 days, but I can't imagine it getting much worse.  I generally have a high tolerance for pain, but admit I do even better if I know what to expect.  My dr told be I would be smooth sailing for 2 days, then get very sore, feel better, only to feel worse again.  All in all, he said it normally lasts about 2 weeks, but the more water I drink, and the more I try to consume normal food, the faster my recovery.  Oh, and he also told me to stay on top of my meds, but I stopped taking them 2 days ago because the side effects weren't worth it,

I will say, it felt like no matter how much water I drank, my throat always felt dry.  If it weren't for my italian ices and practically frozen water, i would be parched.  I would say there are a few necessities that would really help get through it quickly and with as little bit of discomfort possible.  Now that I said that, that is the perfect word ti describe the recovery; unrelenting discomfort.

As far as the necessities, I's say these are ESSENTIAL

A cool mist humidfier

A spit cup

An abundance of ice pops, sorbet, italian ices (anything without dairy)

Close to frozen water

Patience

Soups, jello, eggs, oatmeal, grits

I hope this helps.  IDK if I was just lucky, but I made it my business to drink 32 ounces of water no matter how much it hurt.  I also made sure by day 3 I graduated to foods besides simple jello and italian ices.   I honestly think when I began to eat regular food I began to feel tons better.

Just try and stay positive, it will eventually get better.

Hi I'm a 17 yr old girl and I'm now on day 5 of my recovery (including op day) like most people I agree that it feels the worst in the mornings. I set alarms & sleep with ice packs this helps a lot. When the pain becomes too much I try to stay calm and let it pass over sometimes it works but yesterday I ate a toasted bagel ! :) yesterday was the least painful day actually I don't think any of my scabs have came off its kinda hard to tell honestly Ive had little to no coughing but the yawning omggggg !! I try so hard not to stretch cause it's still sore back there and I feel it'll only make the pain worse I start school in like a week I really hope I'm feeling 10x better by then !
Tips
If it's too painful to swallow water hold your ears and drink
ICE PACKS !!
Set timers for medicine and water during night
& try not to panic when the pain increases just ride it out cause crying makes it worse if you haven't already figured that out
But I wish everyone a short speedy recovery :)

I ended up in ER on day 2. My ent only prescribed pain meds (Tylenol w/codeine) which made me vomit so I took nothing. My throat was so swollen that I couldn't swallow. Thank God for the ER staff. I was immediately hooked up to an IV, given antibiotics, antiflammitory and pain meds. I felt terrific in hours. I was prescribed the same meds to bring home
