I'm 33, male and on day 8 now. I had my tonsils and adenoids removed, had some small sinus surgery and had my septum straightened at the same time. Days 1 to 3, the pain was fine - like a mild throat infection. Day 4 was 8 out of 10. And, day 5 to 8 has been between 10 and 12 out of 10. I had my tonsils removed due to them being constantly inflamed and "yucky" (this is a medical term used by my ENT), but I have, on a few occasions,  considered whether keeping the "yucky" tonsils and trying my luck may have been a better option.

If I was in charge of torture for a military, I would use a tonsillectomy as a means of getting information. This is by far the worst pain that I have ever experienced - like others, mostly at night (WTF??) and in the ears. I haven't slept more than 4 hours in one night since my operation due to the pain.

My ENT told me to get onto solid dry foods ASAP to "speed up healing". It didn't work, or at least if it did, then my body would have healed veeeeeery slowly from this.

Good luck everyone...

Hi I'm 20 and I just had my tonsil surgery on may 16. I am in so much pain. And I can't open my mouth wide each without it hurting so bad. I can't even see my scabs.

I'm on day 5 including the surgery. My sugery was at 8 am and I finally now am kind of just able to talk. I'm afraid of the scabs falling off and I came here trying to find out if i'll be able to eat normal once they are gone. I haven't been able to sleep either. I was given tylonal kodine which isn't very strong and I can barely eat cause everything thickens my siliva then i have to drink more and swallowing hurts a lot.

Today is day 4 post surgery and to be honest it's not as bad as I anticipated it to be, I've read some horrible stuff prior to my surgery and was freaking out but thank the lord the pain hasn't been that bad, whenever I feel like I'm about to get pain I take a few pain killers which helps a lot and within 20-30 min the pain goes away and I can open my mouth and take a few morsels of food even tho it hurts when swallowing but nothing I didn't expect, I've read a lot about people vomiting thank god I didn't vomit at all and the pain killers don't give me a funny feeling other than relief my pain, the scabs are still their in my mouth but it's part of the healing process should come off by itself, I'm still in Day 4 tho they say it only gets worse.

Had my tonsil surgery on Monday and today most of my scabs came off in one go. I had run out of the liquid hydrocodone and went to my local urgent care to get something stronger because I was dying the past five days. On my way home I said "screw it , I'm getting Carl's JR" came home took a bite of a greeseburger (first solid food bite since Sunday night) and it wasn't so bad. Tried some fries and upon swallowing felt them scrape my throat the whole way down. Ran to the bathroom with tears rolling down my cheeks (to inspect the damage). To my surprise , no blood ! But also no more scabs! I couldn't believe it , but it has brought on a whole new pain. Mostly a burning /stinging sensation when drinking water. Swallowing is sooooo much easier I can't even begin to tell you how thankful I am. I never thought I'd see the light at the end of the tunnel. So all in all today has been a major turning point for me. I was so scared to try anything other than popsicles and chocolate pudding until I got the Percocet haha. I have spit up a mouthful of serious coagulated blood that must have been trapped behind my scabs or something. I've also had some mornings where I've filled up a cup of saliva and blood
but my ENT said that was normal? I don't advocate the French fry method but it worked for me . Only things that are really messing with me now is swollen uvula , my tongue seems like it has lacerations on it close to where my tonsils used to be located , thick gloopy saliva , and stinging raw flesh where my scabs used to live. Can't think of much else other than that. I was in pure agony yesterday and now I'm stoked to just swallow with minimal pain, it's like a switch flipped

age 20 female. It is now day 7 of recovery after having my tonsils and adenoids removed. I did so much research before the surgery and was prepared for tons of pain but I have to say I'm relieved that I haven't had as much pain as everybody seems to be having. I walked out of the surgery center eating goldfish and a slushy. That first day I had soft but still solid foods such as french fries.I managed the pain with the medication they gave me every four hours. I tried to go off of the narcotics too early and had a rude awakening. After the first few days, it started to get a bit more painful but still not terrible. I made the mistake of taking a pain pill in the middle of the night without any food and woke up vomiting for two hours. If you decide to take medication in the middle of the night to prevent painful mornings, make sure you eat with it!! I advise having a spit cup with you everywhere you go. The amount of pointless spit you acquire is ridiculous and its pointless/painful to swallow it all. Ice packs on my throat have helped some. I work at an Italian ice shop and thought I was set for recovery. I went there once and had titian ice, it created tons of phlegm in my throat and I couldn't even get close to finishing it. Ive had lots of chicken noodle soup and mashed potatoes. I am finally off the narcotics today and am on Tylenol instead. I'm just working on getting my energy back up but it's still a little difficult to eat. I might try some protein shakes to get out of this weak feeling. Still haven't seen any scabs yet but I had some brief sharp/burning pains in my throat here and there. It is only day 7, but I'm dying to go back to work. Best of luck to everybody!

17 year old female here! i'm on day 6 currently and am seriously questioning whether this procedure was worth it - the pain is actually unbearable! my doctors told me to start eating a normal diet as soon as possible & so i have been changing it up between jelly, pasta, noodles etc. but i wouldn't recommend this (painwise) as eating anything remotely hard is excruciating!! if i had to do this all over again i honestly wouldn't. hoping that it's all uphill from here

Hello, I had my tonsils out 5 days ago and I'm 18. The pain has been tremendous but what's worse was the mucus, I felt like I was drowning in it. So when the huge nasty yellow-white scabs began to form that didn't help at all. I was blowing my nose and a huge chunk of one came out, after that I coughed up a few more. The taste/smell of them almost makes me yak every time.

I have a question how do you see your scabs because I think I can feel them coming off but I can't see them.... someone help me out

I'm a 19 year old female on day 10 of recovery. Day 1 and 2 were not bad at all. I think all the meds from the hospital were still in my system. Days 3 through 7 were the worst days of my life!!! I would wake up in excruciating pain. I was always starving so I would chug, and I mean chug as fast as I could so the pain would be gone quicker, a vanilla slim fast for breakfast and lunch. Dinner time was always a bit easier after having ice packs laying on my neck all day all lots of oxycodone in my system. I was able to eat chicken noodle soup, ramen, pudding, jello, malts, and mashed up bananas around dinner/bedtime. Most of my scabs have fallen off while eating which was awful but i suffered through it. But now on day 10, I've had waffles, cereal, and plain noodles and I feel MUCH better. There is a light at the end of the tunnel guys, I promise!! Stay hydrated and use an ice pack to reduce swelling as much as you can. Try as hard as you can to cry through the pain when eating. It sped up my recovery tons. Good luck everyone!

Hello, I'm 19 and I'm on day 5. Before, for the longest time it felt as though I had stitches hanging in the back of my throat but now that feeling has gone away and I have this constant nausea feeling and this disgusting taste in my mouth from my own breath. I'm hoping that this means that the scabs have partly fallen off or have fallen off completely. I have been spitting up mucus that contains chunks but I feel like that is just from my adenoids. But these chunks are bloody so maybe they are also chunks of scab? I'm not sure. But I can't wait to be healed. The doctor said that my tonsils we're the largest he has ever seen and they were coated in puss. I'm glad they are gone but seriously does this awful smell ever go away? Also, I'm really craving tacos and I can't have them.

Hi I just had my tonsils out 7 days now including operation day. It has been a roller coaster. First day i felt pretty good. stayed on track with the pain killers, was able to talk, stayed hydrated...etc. until day 2 when I was coming off of the anesthesia and the side effects of the pain killers took me down hill. I was throwing up everything. A popsicle 2 seconds later-threw up. I switched to take liquid Tylenol which has been great and not as drowsy. My mornings are the roughest. Its because I go all night without swallowing or drinking anything which makes everything hurt. Today is my first day back at work and I swallowed some of my scabs it was terrible and then my throat really hurt. My advice is to keep drinking and stay on top of taking your medicine. The Tylenol is taken every 6 hours and when hour 5 comes around I can start to feel some pain or in my ears.

This hasn't been easy but I don't think its as bad as all the stories I have been reading about. I was scared too and am miserable because I feel like I am missing out on life, but every day is better. Hopefully it will be over soon.

btw- I am 31 and got them out because my tonsils were like craters and kept getting stones. My ENT said when he took the out they were actually worse than we thought and filled with bacteria. (GROSS)
