Hi Tric,

Whether it's physical or mental, I find that it seems to be a interruption in the swallowing process. The top muscles and the bottom throat muscles seem to "oppose" one another creating a very painful battle in the middle where the food is clumped.

What works for me is to immediately concentrate very hard on allowing my throat muscles to relax. I stop chewing if there is still food in my mouth and I don't take another bite. I quickly clear my mind and start visualizing the food going down into my stomach.

This deep concentration seems to help the process along. I can literally feel the muscles begin to relax, and the food slowly start to move downward. I then give myself a little time before taking another bite. I also, start with liquids before trying anything solid, to ensure the moment has passed. :)

I hope that helps.. :)

Hey, I know this is a longshot. But you describe exactly what I have. Did it ever get worse, did you ever have surgery or anything?

It is called esoniphil esophagitis.....caused by allergies to foods that you don't even realize you have.....esophagus swells and it is very painful....causes stuck feeling and sometimes vomiting and sometimes terrible pain like a heart attack....see an intelligent gastro dr. and he will do endoscopy ..find the allergic rings which identifies the issue and will send you to an allergist.

Thanks, I've had it done now. Turns out I am allergic to dust mites

CHEW YOUR FOOD PEOPLE! My coworker gave me this tip one day when I had to ask him to pull over the work truck so that I could puke. He has the same problem but it is because of not chewing your food enough! Think about it: you're hungry, you're stressed = you're distracted. Always the first bite or so. I just had an unpleasant experience in a restaraunt, where I choked on my food. I panicked and tried to get air down through my throat, which happens occasionaly when I feel that choking sensation. This caused me to feel like I couldn't breathe. I coughed water all over the table and it came out my nose. Did I mention the restaraunt was crowded? Yeah, Good times! Anyways, I realize it is my panicked state when I can't get my food down, that causes me to feel like I am choking and freak the F out! :) I will give all my symptoms and triggers to help for identification: It mostly happens when I am thinking of something stressful, having a large stress in my life or really hungry. If it's bad I will puke up that bite, if it's not bad and I stay calm I can usually force it down with water. In the past I used to think soda was the answer, because when I drank soda with my meal it never happened. I don't always drink with a meal, and now I know it worked because it was washing my food down.

I have had this problem for the last couple of months and the problem is that i feel that something is stuck in my throat all the time, but i have recently been diagnosed with hashimotos thyroiditis, and the doctor says this is where the thyroid is enlarged and is restricting the throat area and pressing on the oesophagus. so maybe that is the problem

This only has happened a few times, but each time I think I will die. The food won't go down or up. There seems to be a soreness in the area where it gets stuck. This last time it left my throat sore almost raw feeling. It's been over a month and it still feels like that. I am afraid it will happen sometime where I will pass out before I can get it up or down so I can breathe. What could be causing this?

Your explanation best fits my problem which I have had for years. I have it usually on the first bite of a meal with rice being the first bite, or cornbread, or a doughnut, especially if sitting down. Eating a bite of a doughnut occurred while driving...not good posture for eating. I know it is related to my hiatal hernia. My peristalsis gets off track with that first dry bite and OMG for 10 to 15 minutes I feel like I am going to die. Everyone around me says, "Get a drink". I shake my head no....I feel like a toilet backing up....nothing makes it go down. If I try to cough up the fluid, the fluid makes it worse because it is so "spongy and elastic" ...don't know how it turns to that consistency but it is. I bend my waist my back my neck...nothing....I jump up and down...then I just try to be quiet...but usually I need to keep bending so my esophagus will pull the food down. It 's as if it just looses the ability to contract (peristalsis). AND...when the food starts to move a little, I feel like I am about to pass out...like it presses on a major vein or something and cuts off my circulation. It is very scary...until the food suddenly moves...then I feel normal. I have had all the tests done and the esophagus stretched but it does not go away. It is very important that I concentrate on my first bite of every meal that has dry food and NEVER get in a hurry to eat or chew because it feels it could be my last bite if I happen to not get out of the situation. I won't go back to the Doctor over this because I have gone 3 times and the same answers. Don't want surgery because any surgery can have complications. The key is slow eating and chewing and no dry foods to start the first bite of your meal. And don't be in a bent situation such as driving a car eating the dry food where you can't elongate your esophagus....this is experience talking....just sayin'.

So, I wanted to put in my 2 cents in case anyone looking on here has the problem I've had. Here is a copy and paste of a post I wrote elsewhere about 2 years go. I did end up needing to get my tonsils out because all the foods bits in the tonsils caused infections. Before I had them out, I was sick 20+ times that year! I was on antibiotics over 12 times that year! It was horrible! I get sick so badly when I would get sick that I ended up needing to drop out of college for over a year. Now that I've had my tonsils out, I AM HEALTHY AND HAVEN'T NEEDED ANTIBIOTICS SINCE!!!

Here's the original post I wrote several years ago:

I get food stuck in my throat a lot. I get just tini tiny little bits stuck back in the crevices and folds of skin. I use a magnification mirror (usually used to put makeup on) and a flashlight... shine the flashlight so light hits the back of your throat. Open your mouth wide and move your mouth and tongue every way you can... Breathe in and out, wiggle your tongue, stick your tongue out, say ahhhhh. You may see a bit of food stuck back there. This is extremely rare. I found your question because I am looking for answers myself online and your question came up in the search results... I'm 32 and this has been happening to me since I was a little younger than you, so don't freak out over it. It's not going to kill you. :-) Gargling can help. Even if gargling doesn't get the food out of your throat, it is still important to do. If you truly do have food stuck back there for several days you will get a sore throat and have really bad breath (coming from the back of your throat). So I use this stuff called Peroxill. You can buy it at Walmart in the mouthwash section. I rinse my mouth with it for a few minutes, spit it out- but I don't spit 100% of it out (just spit once good), then put a little water in your mouth, then gargle. You will end up gargling mostly with water, but it will have a little bit of the Peroxill mouthwash left from not rinsing after spitting it out. This will get rid of the bad breath and any germs that may form from having the food stuck in your throat-helping any sore throat you may have or helping to prevent one. Close the hole in the sink during this process so that if the food comes out when you spit you will be able to see it. Look at it to see if you can figure what kind of food it is. I have more trouble with rice and pasta for some reason. Chewing the food really well makes no difference for me... It's tiny bits that get stuck. I'd have to drink only liquids to not get food stuck in my throat (and you can't live off liquids!). You DO need to go to an Ear Nose and Throat Doctor (ENT) if you do see food in there. Make an appointment and explain what happened. Stress can't cause food to get stuck in your throat, but it can cause you to tense up- and that CAN cause you to scratch the back of your throat while eating... so you may not have food stuck back there. If I get food stuck I can see it using the flashlight... sometimes I don't notice it the day it happens... I'll get a sore throat with bad breathe, look in my throat with the flashlight technique , and see bits of food. 9 times out of ten it's something I didn't eat that day... that's why it causes bad breath. So if you see no food, you are brushing your teeth after you eat, and you don't have bad breath coming from the back of your throat- you probably just scratched it. Back to if you do find food- take echinacea(an herb you can buy in a pill for) and Vitamin C. Follow the instructions on the label as far as how much/when to take them. These two things will boost your immune system so your body can deal with any germs or bacteria that may be in your throat. That combined with the gargling will prevent the sore throat from getting worse and help heal any scratches. Best of luck and remember, don't freak out. even though it's annoying, It's not a big deal. Source(s): I get food bits stuck in my throat. I am not a Doctor.

Drinking a lot of water during the day will help keep your throat open so I've been told, In doing this I found I don't have much of that problem and when I do drinking water right away seems to help clear the throat. Pork and rice seem to hang in throat while eating.

Hello, I have the same issue for the past couple of yrs it seems to come for a month and go for a month.... I so have anxiety however I don't like saying everything is causes by my anxiety... possible yes. However this happens when I am completely calm. Its hard ro convince drs of this. I get the lump after eating... I believe food and smoking combined is the issue... Try looking up gerd and foods that may cause symptoms. Also what really sparked my interest was the comment about giardia. We adopted a dog from mexico two yrs ago who had giardia and then treated for it.
