I dont want to bust anyones bubble but I had a complete hystorectomy in 2007 at the age of 37... I lost 16 lbs after the first couple of months, but then started gaining weight and having a hard time keeping it under control. Im pretty active and eat pretty good. I find that I'm tired alot. I did hormone replacement for about 6 months and that didnt help either...so just be aware that you do loose weight but you can also gain weight after the post surgery. Its very frustrating.

I had my hysterectomy on November 7. I think some women use it as an excuse to eat and that is why they gain. I have not had much of an appetite. I lost 50 pounds before surgery an gained 12 back due to nervous eating. I am doing well and lost the 12 plus an additional 3. It all depends how you handle yourself after surgery. Hope all went well for you.  As time goes on I guess I will see what happens. I am 48 years old and a type 2 diabetic as well.

I'm 50 yrs old & a few months ago, doctors discovered a huge fibroid tumor growing on my uterus, after complaining of severe pain & bleeding during my periods. On November 13, 2012,  I had a complete hysterectomy (via Divinci).

5 yrs ago I gained about 20 lbs in a matter of weeks & no amount of exercise would take off even one pound.  During that time, I was diagnosed w/hypothyroidism, which helped explain the weight gain, but apparently this fibroid had been growing inside my uterus, unbeknownst to me or the doctors. While the thyroid medication gave me more energy, I lost ZERO ponds over the years- despite a rigorous exercise routine.

Oddly enough, I have lost 11 pounds since my hysterectomy 3 weeks ago.  At first I thought it may just be muscle loss because of my inability to exercise, but I am fitting into clothes from 5 yrs ago! I'm sure my uterus and fibroid can account for a few pounds, but never did I expect this weight loss. A pleasant surprise!

I cannot help but think there is some hormonal connection to these fibroids and the removal of them. This weight loss is a very unexpected, but welcome side effect to my recovery :)

I agree! I am scheduled for a full hysterectomy and removal of my ovaries in Janaury 2013. I am 42 and workout 5 - 6 times a week. I am fit and very worried about gaining weight. Many people in my life said they are SO glad they had it done and not to worry. My mom had the same thing and being the closest to me genetically, I am hoping to "mirror" her in her recovery. She had zero weight gain and zero problems afterwards. I am getting married in May and hope to fit into my dress! I knowbeing pain free and healthy is the most important thing so I am not trying to be vain, but I am still human and wory about the weight gain....

Let me start out by Introducing myself, my name is Meltonya, and this is my first time on this site. I was looking for support and advice. I'm schedule to get my hysterectomy January 30, 2013, I'm very nervous, and scared, I never had surgery before, or have   I ever been hospitalized before, This was a surprise to me, I always worked out and been healthy, but when I would work out I was wondering why my stomach was so big, and it wouldn't never go down. So I continue to workout even harder, and my mom said to me, as much as you workout, your stomach should not be that big, go see a doctor, i was scared, I knew something was wrong, cause when I would go to sllep at night and lay on my side, i would feel something round and and sticking out, I would start to cry. So i finally went to the doctor, and I was diagnose with a FIBROID TUMOR ON MY UTERUS, So my doctor told me its a large fibroid, and i have a large uterus, and I must get a hysterectomy. I cryed and till now, im scared, nervous. But my brother, tell me to stay posiive and have faith in the good lord and you shall overcome evrything else, and I will do just that. I know GOD has my back, he have always had my back, and I'm nothing without him, Thank you for listening, and I would appreciate your positive feedback.

I am scheduled to have a partial hysterectomy (keep ovaries) due to large and numerous fibroids. I'm curious to see how your recovery went since you had fibroids too. Have you experienced weight gain? My doctor told me I would lose weight because of the fibroid removal, but I keep reading how it's not true.

Any advise you can provide would be extremely appreciated. Thank you.

Hello - I hope all continues to go well for you. I saw your post and it is extremely valuable. I was told by my OB that I need a partial hysterectomy (leave ovaries) due to large and numerous fibroids. One of my biggest concerns is weight gain. Have you experienced any weight gain?

Any other information you can provide would be very much appreciated. Thank you and stay healthy.

Hello - thank youfor your post. I hope you continue to stay healthy. I am considering the DiVinci robotic surgery for a partial hysterectomy. Have you experienced any problems with this method? My OB told me I have a large (10 centimeter) fibroid and numerous smaller fibroids. I'm not sure if this is considered large, but you mention that yours was huge. How large was yours? Also, have you experienced any weight gain? That is one of my largest concerns. Thank you and happy health to you.

Hi all,

I'm 46 and have three wonderful grown children. I'm now six weeks post op, back to work and feeling great. I had heavy bleeding and anemia for about two years, then a trip to the emergency room and a blood transfusion. That was scary.

Weight - The Dr. prescribed BC pills for a while then Megace to control the bleeding pre-op. Megace is also used to make cancer patients hungry so my 16lb weight gain wasn't a surprise. The weight is coming off now without dieting. I'm not intentionally exercising or dieting. It's just so much easier to function without the anemia and the fear of bleeding through my clothes and embarrassing myself. I'm trying not to overdo but I'm already more active than I have been in a long time and am looking forward going and doing things like swimming! :)

Pain - I had a laparoscopic assisted vaginal hysterectomy so I have five small incisions. Each one is only about half an inch long. No stiches, just glue that peeled off after about a week. I used prescription pain meds sparingly the first week post-op and haven't needed any since.

Mood - I haven't been this happy and level in years. I was over-reacting to things like messes in the house or additional duties at work because I was exhausted and overwhelmed. Now I feel like I can handle anything they throw at me and I have the whole rest of my life to do it. If I take a break it will be to smell the roses not to put my feet up to slow the bleeding! :)

Take care of yourselves. You're the only you this world has.

Hi ladies,

It is a week since my total hysterectomy and all is going so well.  I was very fortunate to have keyhole surgery, and having had 3 abdominal surgeries previously and remembering the post op pain, I am utterly amazed at the minimal amount of pain this time.  The biggest problem is taking it easy and resting, I just know I am doing too much, but I feel so well its hard.  Best bit of all is I weighed myself and I am 8lbs lighter! So long may that continue.  It was so good to read all the experiences in this forum, and I wish everyone speedy recovery and continuing good health.

Regards Lyn.

Hi ladies, I was also glad to find this forum.  I just had my hysterectomy 3 days ago.  I was very pleased to find that I was in less pain than expected.  I do take my pain meds regularly but think I will be off of them very soon.  I had a Laparoscopic Surgery that left my Cervix and one ovary. I was having horrible bleeding each month that lead to severe anemia.  I let this go on far too long as my life was very full and I felt I didn't have time to be down. Two years ago I found out I had a Dermoid Tumor in my left ovary.  They said they would keep an eye on it but when it grew to a certain point it had to come out.  This is when my confusion began.  I was sent to an OBGYN who suggested a uterus oblation would fix the bleeding (caused by 2 fibroids) but she also suggested that the Dermoid be removed and since I was at it I might as well get rid of my tubes.  Being 52 I was not concerned about reproduction as I was done having children but I read some things on line that suggested that this tactic may cause more harm than good.  I decided to have a second opinion at Vanderbilt Center for Women's Health and I couldn't be happier that I did.  It was explained to me that my Fiborids were in the Uterus wall and the oblation may have actually resulted in a second surgery being necessary down the line.  They took all the time necessary to explain all of my options.  Since the Fibroids were actually imbedded in the wall of my uterus an oblation wouldn't have removed them.  If they did remove them the proceedure likely would have been more painful with a longer healing period than the hysterectomy.  I was given the option of keeping my cervix because I didn't have any history of STD's or HPV.  I too felt bloated and pregnant prior to the surgery and surprisingly enough I actually feel less that way even 3 days post op.  I also see a holistic doctor and he told me that I wouldn't be able to drop the weight while I remained anemic because my body was in self protection mode.  Now I am hopeful that I will be back to normal and able to drop the 30 pounds I've been hoping to drop.  We will see!  This forum has helped to give me hope in that direction.  God willing!  I think this is the best thing I could have done for myself.
