allergic to most antibiotics

Hi, I am allergic to most antibiotics, so when I get an infection it’s almost impossible to get a medicine for me. Even when I get a safe antibiotic, I always take it with fear of having allergy or side effects. Is there any other option for me, except antibiotics?

Phobic or psychosomatic or all in your head...that's fine to say but if there is a reaction happening, regardless of why, it is real. Blaming the victim is pure heresy for those sworn to do no harm.
My God, and I thought I was the only one!  I first noticed an allergy to Naprosyn, which I used to take everyday as a kid for Arthritis.  I now have worked my way up to being allergic to all antibiotics and anti inflammatories, except for Ibuprophen.  It's the only thing I can take for headaches, arthritis pain and so on.  I am going to see the doctor in a few hours for what I believe is strep throat and a sinus infection.  It won't be fun.  He knows of all my allergies.  :(
Hi, my little girl who is 3.5 has come out in rash on her face and torso each time she has had an antibiotic (4 different ones now). But my main concern is her changes in behaviour and personality a day or so after starting the antibiotic. She is like a different person, violent, talking in jumbles, needing to touch us (aggressively) biting, and irritated. It is very scary to see her like this as its opposite to her normal behaviour. Given this is a psychological change I feel my concerns aren't taken as seriously but I'm worried about this impacting her brain long-term if continually given antibiotics that she reacts this way to. Has anyone else come cross anything similar?
I too am going through this and have a serious disease that needs antibiotics when it flares. Please look up: Oregano oil, Olive Leaf Extract, D-manose,Probiotics, Garlic, Ginger, Peppermint, and other natural antibiotics. Ask your Doc if he minds if you try them, especially the first two. There are more. Added to Diverticulitis and one surgery already for that, I had repeated UTI's and couldn't take any antibiotics. The doctors were yelling at me too, "I don't know what to give you anymore!" I now pay a bit more attention to my body and catch things early and use homeopathic meds. I believe overuse of one or several antibiotics cause this imbalance in our immune system. But I'm not a doctor and can only mention what is helping me. That doesn't mean it's right for you. Always run everything you want to do by your doctor first and let him decide what best. Good luck!
I am also in the same boat with allergies to all antibiotics and get severe reactions from them - either anaphylaxis or throat swelling. Then they give me steroids to help reaction and I do NOT do good on steroids - get depression and have nausia. I go to Mayo Clinic in Rochester and they treat me just like all the rest of you guys. The Dr.'s get frustrated and mad when they can't find an antibiotic to use. I tried the allergy patch tests - that was a joke. It wasn't until I had it all done that they told me that even though I didn't show a reaction to the patch tests, I doesn't mean that I am not allergic. No reaction to the patch test means that MORE THAN LIKELY I would not have an anaphylaxis reaction. But RASH and throat swelling and all that can still occur. UGH!!!! SO Mayo doesn't have any great insight into this problem either. I just had strep throat and had a reaction to some unheard of antibiotic that they tried - so instead of just being out of work for the 2 days with Strep like most people I had severe reaction right away and was sick and then 10 days after taking it got rash and throat swelling, so I was off work for over 2 weeks from Strep. People just don't understand how horrible it is to go thru this all the time. They think I had a sore throat for 2 days and was goofing off for the rest of the time and are mad at me for being gone. I can't get a Dr.'s Work Excuse note easily because original Dr. that diagnosed Strep said I would be gone 2 days. Then I was seen 2 different times at ER and one last time at Family Dr. No one wants to sign anything saying that I should be excused to the whole 2 weeks. UGH! Glad I found this site so I can see that there are others suffering like me. Trust me, if I find any secret antibiotic or medication that I can tolerate, I will find a way to tell the world.
I have always had that problem with many antibiotics in the market. Then I was prescribed to use Lamik by my doctor where it really didn't start an allergic reaction on me. I don't know how it might treat to another person, you can read more about it here to get a better understanding. However it would be really helpful to you if you could describe your situation to your doctor and he knows the best for you. ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** web addresses not allowed*** Please read our Terms of Use
You may explore some herbal antibiotics, but try a little dose to check for allergies, Turmeric for instance is a good antibiotic, so is garlic
I am going to do desensitization for a zithromax allergy in the next few weeks and it's my first time. I am doing it in the allergy doctor's office, which is inside the urgent care and about 5 minutes from the hospital. I will get there at 7am, and they will administer a tiny, almost homeopathic, dose, and then increase it ( I think they double it every 15 minutes ) until I can tolerate the full dose. If I have a reaction I think they back down the dosage and restart it. They are basically retraining my immune system to no longer respond to the drug. I'll be happy to talk to anyone else who needs it and tell you what it was like.
It appears no one has any solutions, or suggestions?  has anyone  out there found anything that works ?  I really don't need to know how many others suffer from this ( hower devestating it can be);   I  like some answers.  Are there any ??FO
Hi I am so glad that I am not alone as I too find It difficult to get any antibiotics that I am not allergic to the doctors don't seem to belive me when I tell them . I am so fed up and scared I have been given a course of doxycycline for lung infection I'm really scared to start taking it as I think I had a reaction to this before don't know what to do
What has the Mayo Clinic done for you? I am also in your situation. I get itchy with all antibiotics even to the point where my tongue breaks out in sores.
It's nice to find a recent feed so I can ask questions. I am an experienced LPN and have been very sick a good portion of my life. This includes many months of being on antibiotics at a time. Currently going through allergy tests to see what is actual allergy vs serious side effects. 3 years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer and went through the routine, chemo, radiation and lumpectomy. Now my WBC is seldom over 4.0, neutropenia comes and goes. 21 months ago I came down with a UTI, within a year or so, was on antibiotics 17 different times, in October, I got very sick, and went to the ER. The doctor there went over my lists and decided on tobramyacin with steroids and Benadryl before each dose. He told me if I couldn't tolerate it, that he would just send me home. I was like....what? To die? Really? A couple days later my blood cultures came back positive and I was septic. Thankfully my internal medicine doc took over and I had been admitted. Now, since I've been home, have been one the very nasty doxycycline daily and three times have added Macrobid to the treatment plan. My UA can't culture because I'm on the doxy but when we dip it, high leukocyte and protein sometimes positive for blood and sometimes not. So I got tested to see if I am allergic to sulfa, it came back ok but I can't keep the sulfa down. I am fully aware that there is an cause of this infection and until the source is "fixed" I will continue to be infected. But the fix sadly is an ileostomy with possibility of it being permanent. With the chemo brain and resulting simple dementia I do not make the greatest decisions when my infection is ramped up. I sure could use some input.
Hi, I too am allergic to all the antibiotics. I have to be admitted to hospital and given IV Benadryl to counteract the allergic reactions. I now have a UTI and I dread going to the doctor in the morning. She will probably have to admit me to get this cleared up. I have been drinking water and cranberry juice (low sugar) because I am also diabetic. Not sure if this will help anyone, but just wanted to let you know, you are not alone with this problem. Take care and good luck to you all.  Sincerely, P.Boggess
I also have lots of reactions to medications. I have seen allergists too. My allergist told me that she can try and work through allergic reactions ( hives, etc..) but I also get bad adverse reactions( skin eruptions, mouth ulcers, burning of my mouth, red blotches on my lips,). Allergist said there is nothing that can be given or done for " adverse reactions" whereas if you have an allergic reaction they can desensitize you to the medication. I also have IC ( Interstitial Cystitis of the bladder) which is complete hell and am prone to UTIs! When you have IC you cannot drink cranberry or anything acidic or it eats through your bladder and causes severe pain. I am starting to worry about how I am going to live the rest of my life when I cannot take anything. I am either allergic to most antibiotics or resistant already! Very scary... If I did not get UTI's I would be ok and not need antibiotics. UTI's are the only infections I ever get and those are the ones that have to be treated due to risk of damaging kidney and going septic. Very scary....
I have no answer. But I wanted to say I can empathise with you because I am in the same situation and I now have a UTI with quite a bit of blood in my urine and a lot of pain. I have been taking Coloidal Silver but so far, no improvement. I'm scared and scared to go to the Dr, I don't want my kidneys to get damaged but I have no clue what they could do for me. This is definitely not a pleasant position to be in. I pray we all with this problem can find a way someday.
