Hey all,

Just found this post so I thought I'd give my case.

29 / male / very active and healthy.

After eating I experienced a bad pain in the center of my chest whenever I swallowed or about every minute if I didn't. Felt like heartburn, but much worse because of the pulsing pain which I'd describe as about a 7 or 8 out of 10. I took some Pepside Complete, but after no relief for this pain (which also felt like an air pocket trapped or a mass in my chest I decided to go to the hospital. They gave me a GI cocktail which after about 5 minutes completely relieved the pain. It was GERD and they wrote me a prescription for the next 10 days with standard over the counter stuff. Hopefully the pain doesn't return, but my symptoms were very, very similar to many that I've read here and just wanted to let everyone know what my diagnosis was.

It could be an esophageal web or severe inflammation. I have GERD, but was not having any symptoms whatsoever when yesterday I suddenly started experiencing severe pain when swallowing food. Not immediately, but a few seconds after I swallowed it, I felt this severe pain in my chest. At first I thought it was because I had really violently vomited two days before hand. It was so bad, it had hurt my throat so I just assumed it had hurt my esophagus as well and I was just feeling the aftershocks of it. Then I found this thread. I went to the doctor this morning, the pain had become much worse. I could then feel it in my back even, especially when I coughed or burped. The doctor said the cause was GERD, we already knew that, I had been diagnosed for years. But I had switched over to an OTC medicine and ignorantly thought it would work the same. It didn't and the acid has now harmed my esophagus. The doctor says I have either severe inflammation or "webs" near the esophageal sphincter. I have to go back onto the prescription GERD meds at a higher dose for two weeks to see if it resolves itself (if it is just inflammation) and if it does not, then I get sent to a GI doctor to be scoped and the webs cut and removed which he tells me is a quick and easy procedure that is very common.

These webs can form even if you do not have GERD so it is really worth a trip to the doctor to find out. My doctor said there are even some people that have to have the scope and the webs cut out every couple of years because it just keeps reoccurring. o.O

Anyways, I hope this is helpful to someone. It still hurts like hell right now!

Mine just started hurting today. I agree with the 29 year old girl... chest hurts when I drink and/or eat. This occurs directly after I swallow. I don't even know if I should continue eating... really want the rest of my bagle!! ;+) possibly dealing with my throat...but the pain is in my chest. This same tightness occurs when o breath deep. But I feel like I need more oxygen and water...

Hi guys, has anyone got diagnosis here? because what has been happening to me is kind of a hell-ish experience. My symptoms started about 3 weeks ago when I ate in an Indian restaurant - diarrhoea, severe cramps, nausea, elevated temperature. Then it settled down a little but I kept getting the weird feeling of something being stuck in my oesophagus and everything I ate just sat in my stomach for hours and caused crazy bowel movements (i also have a coeliac disease but 100% positive no gluten in the last 3 weeks). So i felt uneasy but managable every day. My temperature was slightly elevated every day and I felt exhausted with back pain. Then last Thursday I came home from work, felt too cold, checked my temperature it was 37.7C had diarrhoea bout and slight heartburn and decided to rest at home. Also, on Friday I went to see a doctor who prescribed me some antacid and ordered a H.pylori test along with and ultrasound of my abdomen to look for possible gallbladder disease (i have on and off pain just under right breast). I have been resting till today (Tuesday) but the pain while swallowing has become really bad, antacids don`t help and the temperature fluctuating like crazy from 38.3C one minute to 36.9 the next. I am desperate! My boyfriend took me to the A&E but I was told it`s a strong stomach flu and I should rest, keep hydrated, take paracetamol and wait until i`m ok to work. I feel like nobody understands my problem. I feel if it was oesophagitis, the antacids would have helped by now for sure. The main problem is the extreme pain when swallowing and the fever along with back pain that comes and goes (worse on swallowing food). I am still waiting for the Helicobacter result and for the ultrasound appointment. Don`t know what to eat, anything I eat or drink gives me pain, I`m so scared.

Please help, I`ve changed to a completely miserable person since the problems started. Any idea? See the doctor again?
Good luck to everyone.

Um having the same problem too, it first started when i was in a high school final and the observer thought that i wanted to cheat someway, the pain was really nasty that i couldn't stand it, i asked him to press hardly on chest where i stood up and gave my back to the wall and he started pressing on my chest really hard.. Thats when the pain faded away..

Now, when this happens to me i just lie down on bed and call one of my sisters and they now what should be done.

I would say that the pain feels like i swallowed a piece of chips that i didn't chew well and it cuts through the esophagus.

I have the same problem. When I eat or drink anything it hurts. It hurts in the right side of my chest and feels like something is stuck there, like swallowing a hard chip. It hurts all the way up to my shoulder and into my right arm. I've had it for three days at least, but this isn't the first time I've felt this.

Hi Everyone I have been reading all of your posts and you all seem to be experiencing what I'am.
I have just returned from the Doctors and have found that after talking to him and realizing what I was eating and doing
when this started for me, I was told that I damaged my esophagus by scratching it with what I ate.

My doctor assured me that since I was able to drink and eat and takie medication I was fine., He stated that a scratched
esophagus will hurt for several days and will hurt not only in the throat but in the check/breastbone area as well.

If you just sit and do nothing you will feel it hurt. If you look up and streach your nech and swollow it will really hurt.

I have a great doctor and trust him with my life more then anything.

So hopefully this will make you all feel more comfortable and you will not worry as much. I was stressed out uintil after I saw him.

Now I'm relaxed and will just wiat out the few days for my esophagus to heal.

Have a great day

Hi

17 male

I had exactly the same symptoms as you, my doctor told me I had only scratched my esophagus and that I just had to let it rest, so I let it rest for 3 days with no results, but on the 4th day so I stopped suddenly to breathe, I could not breathe at all so I rushed into the kitchen to take the first knife I see and sticking it in the throat, and ran over to the neighbor as fast as I could, doctors fixed the cut, but them could not explain what made me stop breathing.

I am nineteen and everytime I swallow I have bad cheat pain, it feels like there is a large rock in my chest. I spoke to my step father who is a nurse and my fathers sister who is also a nurse and both have said this is a common symptom of a flu of a chest cold

I had the pill-induced variety and it was excruciating! I took doxycycline and went to bed. It woke me up that night and then the pain worsened over the next few days until I couldn't eat anything. Since there weren't many answers on here I thought I'd share what ended up helping me as the pain didn't seem to be improving and I was getting really run down!
I took prilosec first thing in the morning.
Tylenol for pain every 4-6 hours - advil and lots of others can actually make it worse.
mylanta in between "meals".
Sleep as upright as possible.

For meals, eating tiny bites of really plain food with 4-5tiny sips of water after each bite seemed best. No big gulps of anything! Some people said no bread, but that actually seemed to go down the best as long as I chewed it until it was practically liquid. Mashed potatoes hurt to swallow but I could get them down with lots of water. I thought yogurt would be good, but it really hurt. It seems like slightly warm or room temperature food and water was best. Cold water hurts. Anyway, I'm getting tons better and I started taking the prilosec about 5 days ago.

Good luck to anyone who gets this. I had never heard of it, but it's terrible!

I experience pain when swallowing food in the right side of my chest, as the food goes down, and occasionally it gets stuck going down, particularly foods such as chicken, rice and raw apple. When the pain is more severe I can experience shooting pain simultaneously into my left jaw and ear, similar to temperomandibular jaw pain, and my lower jaw teeth throb. Sometimes when I breathe in deeply, it hurts in the right side of my chest. I have been diagnosed with Barretts Oesophagus and have tried various acid minimising tablets [Nexium, Pariet ...] however did not feel these were helpful, because I do not have acid reflux. I can also experience stomach cramps at times that build up and subside over a period of five to ten minutes. This occurs more so at night, waking me in the early hours of the morning. I find that sipping water immediately stops the cramps and minimises the effect of feeling hot and inflamed in my stomach. I have pain around my ribs similar to costochronditis, and I am not sure if these are different conditions or related to general inflammation. I also find that when I feel my stomach feels uncomfortable and inflamed, drinking 1 tablespoon of cider vinegar and quarter teaspoon of bi-carb of soda in a small glass of water makes a difference short-term. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

I think that's what caused mine, I'm 19, female. I started having this pain after dry swallowing a couple pills. It'/s happened to me three times and each time it was after swallowing the pills. Eating hurts really bad and drinking as well. I have a high pain tolerance but this is almost too much. I hope I can find an answer. I believe this GERD thing could be it. I'll be going to my doctor Monday morning if it's not clearing up.
