i HAVE BEEN HAVING CLICKING IN BOTH EARS FOR THE PAST MONTH. I WENT TO THE ENT TODAY AND HE BASICALLY SAID IT WAS PROBABLY A MUSCLE SPASM . HE REALLY LOOKED AT ME LIKE I WAS CRAZY. IT'S AMAZING HOW THESE DOCTORS GO TO SCHOOL AND KNOW NOTHING. THE CLICKING IS ENOUGH TO DRIVE ME CRAZY. NO FOLLOW THROUGH. HE BASICALLY LAUGHED AT ME. WHAT IS IT ???

went to ENT this week. told me same thing as he told you - muscle spasm of couple muscles in inner ear. Just wrote me off. said "can't do anything for you". He did set me up for an MRI, and a follow up. My clicking is totally random. sounds like an electric spark in ear.

At least I know I am not alone. Hope you are feeling better. Like you said it is random. Comes when it feels like. Very frustrating ! ;(

I have the same clicking sound and have been told I have Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ )

I found this out when I had pain opening my mouth wide for the dentist.  She sent me for a head x-ray and found out this was the problem.  A friend has the same problem and has suffered from really bad tinitus for a year or 2.  She was diagnosed when her jaw locked and attended A & E.

Common symptoms of TMD include:

  • Pain or tenderness in the face, jaw joint area, neck and shoulders, and in or around the ear when you chew, speak, or open your mouth wide
  • Limited ability to open the mouth very wide
  • Jaws that get "stuck" or "lock" in the open- or closed-mouth position
  • Clicking, popping, or grating sounds in the jaw joint when opening or closing the mouth (which may or may not be accompanied by pain) or chewing
  • A tired feeling in the face
  • Difficulty chewing or a sudden uncomfortable bite as if the upper and lower teeth are not fitting together properly
  • Swelling on the side of the face
  • May occur on one or both sides of the face

Other common symptoms of TMD include toothaches, headaches, neck aches, dizziness, earaches, hearing problems, upper shoulder pain, and ringing in the ears (tinnitis).

It may be worth going back to your doctors and asking if it could be this.  Hope this helps xx

I had this problem for most of my life. When I was in my 30s I decided I had insurance and should do something about it. I wound up getting ear tubes. It's been great for the most part. They sometimes clog which means some popping but much much better than it used to be. I cannot tell you the difference it's made for me.

Interesting...I always thought my ears popping occurred because of allergies or chronic ear infections as a child.  But, I have a history of TMJ also so maybe that's the reason.  Anyway....Finally as an adult I had ear tubes put in...it's helped tremendously!  I do worry some about my hearing as it seems that one ear has lost some over the past few years with a tube constantly in it.  On the other hand I can't tell you the releif of not  having popping all the time.

Hi, I think mine is related to TMJ, or grinding my teeth at night.  I do it more when I'm stressed, and it leads to headaches, ringing ears, dizziness and vertigo, and my ears click sometimes!

My right ear has been clicking every few seconds for the past month or so. The clicks started slow and infrequent, but they progressed. I had an infection a few weeks ago. It went away for a few weeks but now it's back. Also, I just now started having a higher pitched clicking start with more clicks than the regular amount. I always have to wear headphones to keep my mind off it. I have also been known to have a lot of excess ear wax. I have to clean it often. The clicking didn't start until my doctor had to remove a fairly large chunk of earwax with a metal tool about a month ago. Any thoughts?

I have been having a click in my ear and recently tried some ear drops that I had received last year for an ear infection. Clicking immediately disappeared. Could clicking be caused by "dry" ear? I don't know. I just know drops made it go away.

this clicking is driving me insane!!! ITS NOT TINIUS or whatever thats called.. MY EARS ARE NOTTTTTT CLOGGED WITH AIR PRESSURE. they are clicking and i think its more into the category of a muscle spasm. my ears have been clicking for about 2 months. i feel like shooting/Ripping my ear off, it is the most annoying thing ive ever experienced. i keep reading that it has to do with allergy's but i dont feel sick or clogged to the nose i also keep reading that it comes with stress, i do have midterms now in my college so maybe its that, lack of sleep also. i dont want to continually keep take meds to keep this clicking gone for a few days, then take meds again over and over im not the type of person who takes meds constantly. is there anyone, who can help me with this ear problem please! its so annoying i just want it gone already :(
