I had my gallbladder removed 8 weeks ago, wishing now that I could have asked if they could have repaired it instead. I was under much duress and bad pain at the time. When I drink I do not get tipsy, jolly or drunk. I do however hours later get ill. I get stomach problems, bloating, pain and diarrhea. I have sever head pain that NO pain pill will fix, fell sluggish and lay around like a sloth for a day or two. What I have had to eat seems to have no barring on this. I do have to stay away from greasy and spicy now. I wish there were some simple home remedies. I am happy to have found this site and read about others gallbladder stories. It took me a few times to put 2 and 2 together and blame alcohol. Why is no one warned by the doctor?
I don't get a buzz or drunk now too, I use to be able to get a buzz after two drinks now nothing. I had several drinks and still nothing. I get sick so so bad I don't want to try any more. I feel worse without my gallbladder and wish I had it back. The head pain is from hell and all the other effects of drinking without a gallbladder I get too. I want my gallbladder back!!!
he gallbladder is a small bag that sits beneath the liver. It stores bile (gall), a greenish liquid that is produced by the liver. Bile helps break down fat into smaller molecules for easier digestion. It flows from the liver to the gallbladder, where it is concentrated, until your next fatty meal, when it is released into the small intestine. As the fat molecules are absorbed, bile is likewise reabsorbed and carried back to the liver.
Sometimes, gallstones form in the gallbladder and obstruct the flow of bile. This can cause severe pain and is often treated by removing the stones as well as the gallbladder. There are other conditions which may lead to gallbladder surgery (cholecystectomy), but this is the most common reason for treatment.
Since the gallbladder is merely a storehouse for bile, its removal does not affect one's general health or digestive functions. Bile is produced in the liver and it can still flow freely into the small intestine to digest fat. However, instead of being concentrated in the gallbladder, bile now continuously drips in small amounts into the intestine. This change can lead to symptoms such as diarrhea, bloating, pain, and gas after eating a fatty meal. These symptoms usually improve after a while as the body gets used to the changes.
I had my gb removed about 5 years ago. I can handle alcohol fairly well, but also experience all the described symptoms on a regular base.
My concern is my long term health, because my fat digestion is all messed up. A recent blood test reveled that my LDL has risen to 196 with an overall cholesterol of 264. I was shocked mainly because I eat extremely well. My diet is vegan plus occasional fish, with no fried foods, hardly any processed foods - there is hardly any room for improving my diet. However I do love my red wine and can easily finish a bottle a day.
Since my thyroid and pancreas check out perfectly healthy, while liver values are normal but elevated there is only one likely reason for my elevated LDL. My liver is unable to process the alcohol.
Here is my advise for anybody without gallbladder:
#1) Shoot any doctor that tells you can eat a burger the next day and that there would be no difference in quality of life after the surgery. We all know better, doctors should educate us better. I deeply regret allowing this to happen!
#2) Have you cholesterol and liver values checked often and try to adjust your diet and habits (like alcohol consumption) to get them into normal range - you will have fewer problems and live longer.
P.S.: My doctor is still alive, but gallbladder surgery is performed way too often.
Try taking Nexium an hour before you drink and eat party foods. Nexium does the trick. Note Nexium is by prescription only!
Be careful with immodium and any type of opiod pain killers. They cause the bowels to basically stop moving. The pain you're experiencing is the sphincter of oddi seizing up. You can try anti spasmotis for relief.
I dont know why your dr would put you on Nexxium!! After GB removal you will need to be taking digestive enzymes which enable your digestion - especially when eating fatty or heavy foods also alcohol - you are now low on your body's natural way of assisting digestion of foods like this - you do NOT need LESS stomach acid - you will likely feel the same Symptoms however as someone with low stomach acid. Do NOT take Nexxium Or any other Rx similar -try digestive enzymes. A good combo of different enzymes is best, but initially the animal digestive enzymes are usually recommended and help most with meats. A good combo that I began taking is by Integrative therapeutics and has all the plant based enzymes as well, and milk thistle which supports liver. Something you will need after GB removal.
I used to put away shots like it was nobody's business as well, since surgery 12 yrs ago, I can MAYBE drink 2 drinks. I have drank more but the alcohol sits in my stomach and burns. I end up taking extra digestive enzymes and it definitely helps. On a typical night, one or two drinks and I'm good for a few hours now.
Hope this helps! -K

That's incorrect, there is not a need for digestive enzymes after gallbladder removal, it isn't the pancreas duh! The bile that was stored in the gall bladder is now being secreted slowly and continuously by the liver into the small intestine, bile helps in Fat digestion so if the pancreas is working why would u need extra enzymes unless u want diarrhea all day . Maybe revisit anatomy and physiology 101 ... This forum is about alcohol and lack of gallbladder so if you're not going to assist, don't discuss your misinformation with others.
Im gonna sip on 2 beers right now starting 24 hours after removal and i guarantee nothing will go wrong except feel better and smoke a hitter then pop a pill!
I had my gallbladder removed only 2 weeks ago. I do love wine once every 2 weeks. I have had a normal diet since surgery even curry and crisps and chocolate and a full bottle of wine 2 nights ago. I have had no problems so far. No upset tummy or sickness. Hope it continues this way. :)
I had surgery a week ago... I drink White Russians... So far no problems
My belly button pain went away a week post op. Luckily I had a speedy recovery and was able to resume pretty much all normal activities like work a week after. I'm now 2 weeks post op and haven't had anymore pain. I guess it really depends on each person. I personally had most of my pain prior to surgery. Afterwards it was all gone except for the normal incision pain for a few days. I'm having my first drink tonight and so far doing well, Hope this helps.
To be honest only that and wild turkey and dry ginger ale is ok for me.
I get pain where my pancreas is or acid reflux or pain where my gall bladder used to be.
I also found if i don't eat and drink at the same time it helps x
